Where to find Crappies
« on: Dec 16, 2010, 06:03 PM »
Hello everyone. Crappie Fishing is relatively new to me this year and I really don't know where to start. Can anyone gives me tips on where to find them? How to find them? What types of bait to use? Thanks!!! :-\
The fishing is always better on the other side of the lake

it can depend on the lake so it is hard to give tips on finding them. In a couple lakes I fish the crappie are suspended in deeper water 20-40 feet, but they are not to far from the shallows and can at times move up in the shallows. I like to use a jiggin raps, smaller spoons as well as normal panfish jigs for crappie. In my lakes pink is a hot color, if not pink Im goin natural with whites or glows

I rarely find them on the bottom ususally always suspended... Jig the whole water calm if you are fishing less than30fow...9 outta10 times i find them higher in the calm. Once i get deeper i tend to catch much more gills..and jig up, you will have a much better chance they dont like it going down as much i think... I think electronix is the hugest weapon here

In one of the lakes I fish, from first ice to ice out, they are suspended over 40ft

Often the first place I'll check is the first 20'+ flat outside a bay with a decent drop. Generally find the fish around the depth of the top of the drop down to the depth of the deepest/thick weeds. Not written in stone but seems to work around me, for your waters???????????

Well earlier in the season would they still be suspended over deep water or closer to the weeds? ???

They move a lot and every lake is different. Depends on what they're eating at the time and where it is, if they're hungry at all.

I find them in the evening moving up on the weed flats that produce Gills, and also in the channels in the evenings and into the night.

Generally under the ICE :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: Couldn't resist...........
It varies, for years I have caught them in 32' of water right off the bottom. Matter of fact so tight to the bottom my VEX hardly picks them up til' they rise to the bait. Closer to ice out look for them shifting gears towards the shallows or weedy flats for spawning
