How long does the ice last from the US border to the upper regions of Canada?

The latest I have seen ice is at the end of May-Early June, and I am sure there is ice in june-july on lakes farther north.

I've seen ice on Wollaston Lake, Sask on the 17 of July.  But that is unusually Late.  Usually gone by mid to end of june.  Last year was Early, Flew in to tazin Lake on the Sask, Northwest Territories Border May 10/07 and was none left on the lake and just a little in the middle of lake Athabasca.  I was told by the locals that it was out on the 15th of April , Earlier than anyone can remember for that far north.  Lots of rain last spring and thinner ice than usual.

i'm sure we made ice here last week, probably head up north next weekend for the northern zone closer. more worried about too much snow to get on the lake than not enough ice. last year we drove trucks on the ice on april 15th up in the northern zone.

Yeah Natwild it was too early last year.  Ice was already gone for a month when we got in.  We didn't get much sight fishing for northerns in the shallows as the waters were warm and the cabbage beds were already coming in, crazy for that time of year.  There was only one bay connected to the river which stayed cooler allowing for the only sight fishing we had last season.  There was alot of snow last year that insulated the ice from freezing up like it should, that in combination with a warm wet spring.  This year is looking better, I can hardly wait to hunt down some huge gators in the shallows.

Master Angler, The ice went out early but tazin doesnt warm very fast.  It is a really deep lake(Ive found 500 feet 300 yards off a point) lots of deep shallow deep shallow.  The finder has a heck of a time keeping up.  So this keeps them "in the bays" a good part of the season and a bonus is the big trout in the bays that T-Bone the pike while your reeling em in.
The Topography around the lake is pretty wild.  Its the bases of an ancient mountain range.  Fairly rugged(more so than anything else i've seen in sask).  Very Picturesque, Makes you feel like your in BC.

I agree with ya, Big Gators and Huge Trout.  Life is sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Add some big walleys and it must be Heaven on Earth.

Sweet Natwild, I figured you'd have shallow piking for most of the season there.  The lake I am at has maybe 6 small 70-90 ft holes and the rest of the lake avgs 6-12 ft, with a fair bit of 20-30ft spots too but on average the lake is quite shallow, making it a trophy pike factory, and thats it, they dominate........until I hit the water anyways  ;D.

LOL I know what you mean.  It feels good to go back to a spot year after year and you see those big girls laying there and you think I know where you live..    Or the first cast of the season and hook a monster.  Its like you didnt even leave.    Do you catch many that you know youve caught before?  What lake are you on in Man?

Caught a few for sure that are the same with distinguishing scars, etc.  And guaranteed many more with no distinct marks to tell them apart without comparing pics.  I am at Edmund Lake.   www.trophypike.com

Thats really a hard question to answer. Here in BC in the southern parts like lotus land (Vancouver), they don't get any ice but in nothern BC it hangs around till usually early July on small lakes. Here in central BC (500 miles north of Vancouver) we still have lots of ice and it will be with us till mid May average. If you go up to northern Canada probably late July. Canada is a big place.

I just got back yesterday from Cedar Lake...a little bit north of the 53rd parallel...fishing Tuesday and Wednesday...an extension was needed on my friends Shark auger.

They are definitely used, at least here in Manitoba.  Of course, portables have made something of a dent in the hardside population.  Around here, we have had issues with vandalism, which makes the portable somewhat more attractive.

No rules on hardsides....just have to be off before break up which could be from March to June depending which lake you are on. I hear the guys talking in Manitoba about having to have their shacks off before certain dates on certain lakes? Not sure of them? But here in BC we have prehistoric rules. Also rare to see any shacks on lakes here.

I took my shack off March 25 ...lots of ice(40 ") but the south-facing ramp shoreline was getting pretty rough .
A buddy of mine took his shack off Dinorwick lake today , last day of Walleye season , April 14 .
Pulled the shack across the lake a couple of miles with his half ton....forgot to ask him how thick the ice was....I'm guessing over two feet .
He caught a whole mess of walleyes .

Here in Saskatchewan we have to have our shacks off the ice for the last day of the season March 31 in south and central zones and by April 15 in the northern zone.  A 50-50 mix of portables and permanent shacks here.

Sure...if its ice you want...we got it. But hurry, with the wind and rain the last couple days she might not last another month in northern lakes.

If you use MapQuest or MapBlast, choose Prince George, B.C. - that'll get you close.  If I remember correctly, it is on the order of 20 hrs driving from Winnipeg here (just north of MN/ND border).  It's a bit of a hike...gas is more expensive up here too with more taxation.

Would, two jig poles, two tipup's, and some warm clothes in a travel bag, while "hitchhiking" work?   :D
