Title: Completely off topic but .......
Post by: Spooled85 on Feb 21, 2018, 05:40 PM
Ok this has nothing to do with fishing . But in know we got a few hard core hunters on here . I have hunted everything my whole life and have seen this three times now in the past several years walking there the woods. I have found two baby opossums , and now a screach owl with the head pulled plum off !! Not eatin at all just has no head and it's no wear to be seen !! Any of you ever witness this or heard of it ?? And what are your thoughts ?? I was one told a owl will do this ??

Both owls and hawks are capable of doing this.  It is usually the head that is found alone.  Perhaps the predator was spooked before it
could feed on the body.  Years ago I attended a science teachers convention held in downtown Indianapolis.  When we broke for lunch we
left the Hyatt hotel  via a door whose wall went straight up about 10 stories.  The sidewalk was littered with pigeon heads and bloody feathers.  Several of the "science teachers" commented on the cruelty of whoever did this.  When I pointed out that the heads were an indication that the local peregrine falcon population was thriving,  I got more than a few dirty looks!  I'd vote for an owl or raptor.

fish on, fish off

Got any farms cats around? My cat would kill all kinds of stuff and only bring home the body, never the head.

Cats usually eat the head first, give them a fish and watch!!

Thanks guys for the input ! I think not I'm convinced that it is a owl or hawk . I have both that stay by the house . We have chickens and I had to put a top on because of the hawk . Makes since ...... I do have a farm cat that stays around but she don't leave much of what she gets ! And this lil owl still had the hole body . Could be Sasquatch too lol Never know  ;D

Owls and birds of prey will do this. The head is taken back because of the brains having more protein and easier for to feed there young. I have had chickens and ducks my
Whole life and have seen this first hand. But that's just my two cents. Don't lose your
Head over it!!

Owls and hawks eat the entire carcass of their prey. They will not leave it lay to rot unless startled, usually they still will carry off the prey.

Dead animals laying around, and just the head missing is a weassel. I learned this as a very young lad when i went to feed the chickens and pheasants one evening. Step dad set traps, sure enough weassel. So on and so on over the years as i grew older.

Till this day when i hear of ppl having the same issue, i tell them to research and set traps for weassels, and they are successful.

A weassel will not eat the rest of the carcass remains, only the head.

I too, over the years of my extensive hunting have come across a few remains that were headless.

Completely inconclusive!  Reminds me of the time in my sporting goods store when I received medical advice from many of my customers about a pain in my backside.  Most concurred that the problem was most surely hemorrhoids.  Turns out after a self extraction a few days later it was just a bone in my arse.  Evidently I had not chewed a recently eaten pork chop well enough and swallowed a bone sliver almost an inch long.  You're welcome!

When I first moved into my house I had red fox living out back.  I would see the adults often but then noticed that they had two pups.  One week after seeing the pups I was out back in the woods dumping grass clippings and came across the two pups dead with there heads missing.  Very weird to hear of something like this again..

A little over half the size of an adult red fox. They weren't newborns.
