BTW - One of the members here just bought a new snowmachine AND built a hardside shanty. We can expect ice is say 5-6 months out.
-
Al Gore just called, glottal warming is here. From what Al said no ice in Alaska this year. Some guy built such an awesome hard side all the heat from the sun is being directed strait to Alaska causing a major solar phenomenon. the only way to reverse this phenomenon is to give me the snowmachine.

Or not at all this year!

<----Still hoping you got rid of that turbo. ;) 550F or 570F dude!

I heard that it was all the hot air coming out of his ears that was keeping the ice and snow away.
-
I have seen ice and snow for the last month at work. Thinking it will head south soon...I hope.

Looks like shes locked up now!

We already have a couple Mainers to deal with. .....
Fortunately, they aren't too bad and fish well too. They do hang out with some people of "questionable" nature.

Don't let that stop ya. 12 hours by plane and 4 by tuck and your on the ice. I just flew to Maine for $460 round trip in October. If you see some one fishing out there, then it's a good chance they are from Maine ;)

I talked to with the lodge yesterday. Yvette said the lake is a mess. Overflow everywhere. People are advised to stay near the shoreline. No one has shot the main trail yet.

So I'm a little new to ice fishing.
What causes overflow? Barometric pressure?
-
Booo Man that's tough to swallow, and here I was hopeful that with the super cold weather it was going to forgo the slush

So I'm a little new to ice fishing.
What causes overflow? Barometric pressure?
A couple of things cause overflow.
Pressure cracks where one section of ice gets pushed beneath another or incoming rivers/streams.
But the biggest problem is getting snow before there is a good solid base of ice. The weight of the snow forces the ice down and cracks it.
The water fills the depression. Because snow is a great insulator it takes a long time to freeze up the new water on top of the ice.
It is the worst thing about sledding in the winter.
We have been lucky the last couple of years in Yellowknife in that the ice got nice and thick before we got any snow.
We had our first real snow on Saturday and we already had over a foot of ice before hand so we will not have to worry about the dreaded overflow this winter. :)
-

The lake has only had a few days below zero and no -40 to lock the ice in. They had some snow but high winds blew some of it off. Watch the bays where the snow ended up as the ice will not be as thick due to the insulating of the snow.
Another reason for overflow is there are springs that feed the lake from the hillsides. This water will end up on top of the ice. When you find one, remember where it is if you like fishing for grayling.

Thanks for the answers guys :)

I will post when the lake is pretty much safe.

I will post when the lake is pretty much safe.
Thanks again!!!!
I need to get a trailer for my machine before I can go anyways :(
But it's on then! Well if I'm not working. I don't come home until the 12th. So.... I have to fish vicariously through you guys!
-
Looks like it will not be easy getting shacks out this year. Lots of snow up north on not so much ice to support it. Makes for a mess >:(
-
A friend made it in. Says the lake isn't bad, not much overflow. Caribou all over. Too dang cold for me. -32.
-
Be very careful. Rumor has it that there is a Skandick at the bottom of the lake.

Not mine, but I do know a few others that use them up that way. Do you know who it is?

I haven't talked to him yet.
I think his new name is Lucky.
-
Lake should be safe. New shanty just got pulled out the other day. He said 18" of ice and it appears to be getting cold again by the end of the week. He is probably in your spot.
BTW - I need to get with you. I have a place you need to fish. Closer to the lodge too.
-
Good deal, I will be heading sometime around 20th of Dec.
-
Hard Luck has been brutal to me this year so I hope to be busting my cherry this weekend at LL.
Giving it a go 13 thru 15. Maybe meet a couple of you on the trip?

If you see a Tundra headed your way..... Don't shoot.
-
Ice is good >12" and found zero overflow and only a couple inches of snow on top, so you can "hole-hop" and move to new locations easily. Dont rip across the lake your first run out or you will be seperated from your snowmachine from impacting a large plate of ice (only in a few locations) that was pushed up during the freezing process.
-

we'll keep things holstered ;D...It would be a privilage to meet any of you regulars.

no problem, and thanks. we are staying at the lodge. come by and say hello if your out there. I will post up a report when we return.
-
Better check the forecast. http://www.arh.noaa.gov/zonefcst.php?zone=141
Watch for caribou, they are everywhere. From Gunsight on. Herds on the lakes, low visibility at times.
Just talked to AKHardwater. The winds are heinous.
-
Winds? Glad the shack aint out yet.
-
More mammals this weekend than I have seen in a couple years. Moose and bou. A hundred in front of the lodge. More near the Point too. 60+ on LL road at least. I had to stop to let them cross the road.
AKHardwater built a sweet shanty. Lots of good ideas!
Ran into the FBX guys, man they make them ugly up there! ;) We need to setup a spring party on the ice like Tyone a couple years ago.
The lake is a bit rough. Going in with barely any snow on the ice was really rough. Only one small section of overflow. Coming out on a few inches of fresh snow was a bit smoother.
WATCH FOR PRESSURE RIDGES!!!! Some are 6' tall. Stay near the markers and whatever you do..... DON'T go flying across the lake off trail!
-
Great trip visiting the Lake Lousie Lodge this last weekend, meeting some ice shanty locals and doing some fishing. The caribou migrating across the lake was awesome to see. Got to do it again.
I will wear a mask next time for you Dirt. ;D

-
I'll be up the 28th, 29th and 30th.
-
Depends on the weather. Looks like a week.
-
Is there cell service or wifi at the lodge?
-
My phone is intermittent depending on where I am standing in the lodge. Haven't tried wifi. 822-3311

I'll have to call Yvette, wife is going to know I'm alive ::)

Yeppers ;)

You should be able to get service just out side the lodge. I get service all over the lake, no problem.

Took these pictures while hauling the shack down the lake Thur.

It was -38 a couple hours ago. 2 snowmachines broken. Travelers are staying at the lodge. I suspect -45 or so in the AM. Saturday is looking much better.
-
Yikes! :o
Hoping it's a tad nicer tomorrow.
-
Dang! I'm thinking the lodge is the best bet!
-
Fished up there one New Years was -56. Toughin up boys
-
My toughness wears off around -30

Fished up there one New Years was -56. Toughin up boys
I did 3 days at -48 last year. Frozen tracks, weed burner on 4 machnes, propane not flowing, 2 Polaris rental machines with broken recoils, nothing fun about it. Everything you touch has the ability to break. Got mine running on Sunday then went and chipped ice on the neighbors track for an hour. Tented of a 800 Summit for 3 hours before it would start.
The weather looks much better tomorrow.
-
It is cold up there :o I would rather be up there and have the cold move in than head up at -40. My propane was froze last time I ventured up below -50. Temps like that are hard on the equipment for sure. Good luck, hope it warms up.

Just got back to Anchorage after 3 days up. Loved every minute of it. People were amazing. Pretty sure it was Dirt I met at the bar on Saturday, I really appreciate the tips bud. Jon and Yvette were awesome, couldn't of asked for a better experience. My friend and I picked up 3 lakers, took a few quick pics and sent them back home, they were pretty small, but I'm a total laker ice newbie. My only experience with them is trolling in Manitoba, maybe a dozen times. Caught some bruisers and got a love for them, but vertically fishing them over ice is new to me. I can't wait to go back, probably wait a couple of months though.
-
henrychinaski,
we were up there as well, were you in a big eskimo hut or two? We just stayed alive on Friday the 27th, buddies machine was dead from the cold and we had make sure the generator was going to start back up. Fished Saturday and hit a bunch of fish, but only landed a couple of small lakers. Bit was soft and fish were being what seemed to be picky. I do have to say though, finally no overflow to really speak of, that was nice. Now for the next trip.
-
We were in a frabill flip over.
Seen a few marks that screamed laker, but couldn't get them to commit.

Yup, that was me. Spent 9 days up there. Awesome weather! Only fished a bit. Not even a hit. I went to my friends area and it is not where I would normally fish.
Imagine the tips if you would have bought me a bloody mary!!!
-
Haha, I wish I would of, I was a space case from only getting 3 hours of sleep the night before we left, you'll have to excuse my bad manors ;D
-
Anybody know if the trail has been groomed any overflow issues.
-
I heard it was good up there right now. No fish to be had but the trail and ice is great. So I heard

Ice is solid. Guy on Susitna used a drag groomer and really did a nice job. Fished twice..... got nothing. Friend got 1 small burbot.

I ate a large portion of it, for the record.... I have never caught a burbot. It was good with king crab and pork steaks!

Don't think he is questioning the burbot, or that you only caught one, just that you made mention you had a FRIEND ;D
-
Look at the burbot on AOD and weap.
-
Look at the burbot on AOD and weap.
I agree too bad they made the fry pan. Heard one had a pretty old tag in it
-
Looks like a heat wave headed that way.
-
how did the lake fare with the warm weather? any updates snow or fishing? might try to head up friday for fishing
-
Lots of overflow from the lodge to Bird Island. Lots! Deep ruts. Go slow. Trail past is rough at times even though they just groomed it.
-
Not a lot of ice fishing being done this year. Only 25 entries in the Valentines Day Poker Run. I went out for 9 days and there was hardly any traffic on the lake.
-
Gonna give it a shot for a few days next week.
-
Any advice for newbies trying to catch some burbot this weekend? Just found the website the other day and thought I'd ask.

If you fish tip ups then hooligan works well, if you jig you can tip it with whitefish or hooligan. Burbot are night feeders, will bite during day hours this time of year. Fish shallow 3-10 feet.
-
Anyone headed up this weekend?
-
I am headed up this weekend with a coworker. We will be staying the night in one of the cabins. I drive a red super duty and were hauling our sleds out there. Matt
-
There getting em right now!
-
I'll be up Thursday morning ;
Staying at the lodge.
-
Myself and a couple pards will be getting into the lodge Friday night! Looking forward to it!!
-
How did the you guys do fishing this last weekend? Going up there this weekend to get some lines wet. I am having problems finding White Fish. Does anyone know were i should go to find some?
-
I had a great time up there, my partner was a little hung over so we got a really late start fishing Saturday. We hooked into one really nice laker but he avoided the hook after screaming the line off the reel of over a min. We had one of our popups get completely spooled and the line popped off of that as well. Sunday we got two burbot and unfortunately had to head back to work but it was nice being back in the interior again even if it was 26 below both mornings when we got up.
-
I heard Sportsman's Warehouse carries packs of whitefish
-

My buddy pulled up this toad a few minutes before we had to go.

-
hi folks new to the site but not to hardwater fishing. thinking bout heading up there on Monday or Tuesday have not fished there before so I've got a question or two do i need an extension on the auger this time of year? and how much if any overflow we might have to contend with
-
Extension. Absolutely. Save your back
-
Lake was solid last week no overflow, I used an extension, would be cutting it close with out one.
-
Thanks for the info now to just find the fish and life is good. If anyone has a direction to head to without giving away your secrets that would be cool too thanks again
-
Rumor has it that there was a huge burbot caught. Awaiting pics.
-
Define huge.
Over 20? :)
-
I heard 19lbs but I did t see photogenic proof
-
heading up this weekend for a quick trip, anyone going up?
-
heading up for a trip as well. No machine walking sking out to bird and larson.
-
I heard 19lbs but I did t see photogenic proof
19lbs 2 oz to be exact and unfortunately the pics really don't do the fish justice. I would have tried to get better pics but she started to spew eggs so I got her back right away. Caught several others in the 10 to 15lb range and they were all dwarfed by the big hen. I had a pretty good season this year with allot of burbot over 10lbs including a 14lber that was 32inches, talk about a football. As far as lakers go I only managed one over 20lbs and that was the first fish of the season, it was all down hill on lakers after that. Hope everyone else had a good season now its time to kill some bears.
-
anyone know if there is still some snow left on the lake for machines , thinking of one more trip tomorrow really would like to get at least one laker this year.
-
Plenty of snow.
-

Plenty of snow, can be hard packed early on the morning from cold temps. Take an extension if you have one
-
When I was up on my last trip I caught a small laker that had a blue zip tie stuck through its back under its dorsal fin. Some idiot obviously wanted to start their own personal tagging system. The wound was still bleeding and all pusy and would have eventually killed the fish. I caught the fish up on the north end of Susitna so if your in the area and catch another one of these fish call fish and game and let them know. This is considered fish harrasment and is illegal. If you know who is doing this tell them to stop and buy a tagging kit there is no need for this crap.
