Weirdest thing happened: went out on the lake I live on. My brother and I spudded our way out to find 4-5 inches of ice. Not solid black ice but still pretty solid. Went fine all afternoon till BANG, my left foot, and leg went through up to my hip. Thanks to many posts on the Shanty I paused and gained my senses. Pulled my leg out and rolled about 15' and stood up. I saw the opening in the ice that I went through, about 1' X 2'. I can only assume there was a old hole there from a while ago. No one has fished in this cove for over a month. Long story short, a banged up elbow and hip but live to fish another day. Please all be careful out there.
On a good note for all those nay sayers out there I was also on 11 1/2 " in Central Ma. this morning and solid ice and a friend was on 14 " in western Ma and not in Pittsfield area so we may have a good amount of fishing yet!

I fished in the berks today and they were driving on the lake. Glad it was only your leg that went thru.

old holes and rotting fire pits are my biggest fears with the warm weather. glad you are still fishing.

18 inches of ice on Bartons a couple of years ago and Big Bry put a foot through up to his hip. You just never know and now is the time to exercise extra caution. Glad it was only some bumps and bruises.

There are only 2 kinds of ice fisherman, those who have gone in and those that are going in ::) I have been ice fishing for almost 40 years and I have been in 3 times over my head and it was late ice. When it gets soft you can fall thru 8", It turns to slush under your feet. Be safe out there!!

Very happy to hear you are ok! That's some scary stuff until you realize you're not completely in the water. I hate when a foot breaks through! I can't remember if you bought a floating suit? I love my Striker! Hope all is well 👍

When it happens the right way you get a nice cough to go along with the being cold and wet if you know what I mean.

it's funny you mentioned that. But you don't have to get wet to get that cough. Quick story, I got me and the wife stuck in the snow about 3 miles into a back mountain road here in Montana. The road was maintained up to a point, I tried turning around but after a little bit I knew I went too far! I should have backed out when I could!!!!!!!!! But I was committed and we went forward looking for a spot to turn around. Well, that wasn't happening because now the snow is about 2'- 3' deep with one set of tracks that just ended and about 4' of snow just off the road. I did my best to turn around and got the truck stuck right across the road! It's now 6pm about 6 degrees and getting dark! My flashlight was almost dead and a 3 mile hike with a cell phone light wasn't gonna cut it! (No signal either) Especially with wolves and mountain lions all around! Luckily a hunter was coming out and assisted us the best he could. After an hour or 2 huffing and puffing that cold air, I got the worst cough that lasted days!
We never got the truck out that night and went back with a team the next day. This awesome hunter drove us out on his snow mobile 3 OF US ON IT, ONLY DUMPED ONCE LOL.

Thats a great story Keith what I was referring to was the old bean smash against the ice...makes you cough a bit!
