Title: The Head Hook
Post by: Iceshanty on Nov 06, 2003, 07:31 AM
The Head Hook

Here's a way to position your bait on the hook that drives sniffer bluegills crazy!

Simply insert the hook just a bit down from the head with your finger over the head, slide it in until you just poke the tip of the hook into the head of the waxworm or your finger ;D.

I'll run two poles, one rigged with a horizontal jig (rat finky, marmooska) the other rigged with a vertical jig (dot, moonglo). Working both you can easily tell what the fish prefer. Fish that sniff one presentation and will often chuff down the other on the drop. If you get short bites try cutting the waxworm in half. Hook mousies and spikes in the same manner, this works best with waxies.

Very good tip.  I used this style last winter and it worked really well.  If it doesn't work, try snipping off 1/8" of the tail of the waxies so it bleeds all it's juices out while your jigging.

This technique seems to work best with the blues. But also works well on crappies and perch. I've even nailed walleyes up to 4lbs on 2lb line with a #12 rat finky set up in this fashion ;D Hang on!!!!

Very cool picture -- I use this same approach -- I use a aqua view --when you jig the moussie it flutter's and wiggles -- which causes the fish to pound it. If it doesn't move they will just stare it down

Well, I'll try it. BUT, most of the time if I don't have the hook covered totally, NO GO. I can be hammerin' slabs and drop the line next time nothing. Pull the jig and tip sticking out. Re-thread and next drop?  WHAM!!!  Most of the hooks on the jigs I use are gold except for Marmooskas.
