Did well in the morning at the narrows.  Went to the dam around noon and marked 3 or 4 dozen between 8-16 feet but could not get bites.  There were some guys that did really well in the morning right next to the dam.

Yeah Rip pretty sure we fished your holes Sunday tried to stay far enough away from Redneck and his pops not to ruin their peace and quite  ;) but I think you could have heard these boys from the dam if you listened close enough. They had a blast tracking up that hillside. Here's a little video of one of the runs.  ::)

Nice video.  Was thinking of taking the nephews back to let em do that same thing and also wear themselves out digging caves.  Looks like where we were.  Caught all our fish in the holes closest to the shore.   Guys were also doing really well in the morning next to the dam.  Love how wintry it still is down there.

Yep definitely winter here still! Supposed to snow all week. One buddy has nicknamed the Hebgen basin area The Icebox... Rained on us Sunday tho,.... not cool! Thanks for the report on the dam I hadn't heard anything from anyone in a while. Lots of guys starting to line whip around here now and that seems to be all they want to talk about. Go figure  ;D

It was fun to hear how much fun the kids were having kyle, also the coyotes were neat to hear. It's always weird when it rains when ice fishing. Glad we didn't get as soaked as you kyle  ;). Rip did you have a sled that was built on top of some skis? We saw a guy walk in from where you guys were fishing later in the day on Saturday afternoon. I will post our pictures when I get back to my computer. Can't wait to go back this year but it will be with my line whipping apperatis haha. It sure was a great weekend for ice fishing for quality fish

here are pictures from my dads trip and mine to hebgan over the weekend. had an absolute blast!

firsts fish ever on my new ice rod I built. 17 inch rainbow

my dad with the only brown trout of the trip

I love really dark rainbows. this was my favorite fish of the trip as far as rainbows went

even caught a few on the jaw jacker. Another quality rainbow

even the whitefish were chunky

another 15-17 inch rainbow

little guy

the quality of fish in this lake is what keeps me making the 4 hour drive. one of, if not, my favorite place to fish in this great state.

my longest fish of the trip, 19.5 inch rainbow

same 19.5 inch rainbow with my new favorite trout rod.

biggest whitefish, 18 inches

1 pound Utah chub

this was my most exciting fish for the trip as wierd as that sounds but this fish was ounces away from a new state record. This guy was 1.5 pounds and the state record is 1.89 pounds for Utah chub. SO CLOSE!!! released to get bigger

my dad with the biggest fish of the trip. 19.5 inch 3 pound rainbow

final parting action shot of my rod build. nice parting shot to end the ice season on. cant wait to come back next ice season!
safe ice, tight lines and god bless!

It was a great trip. Not sure why it took us so long to ice fish it. We go fish in in the spring and summer when we can but this was the first time ever ice fishing it.

Awesome time. Those are great fish. I was completely unaware that the record chub is swimming in Hebgen somewhere.  :) gonna get the youngest's batman rod out. That thing is a chub magnet! Glad to hear you'll be back for more ice. I've got an extra sled we'll have to do some exploring! Good to see guys getting out with their dads. DH and Redneck you remind me to give thanks to the man that got it all started for me. Nicely done fellas!!

The current record was caught in canyon ferry but there are a lot of one's close to it and I'm sure some breaking it in hebgan. I haven't caught one since I was a kid. I used to not be able to get trout to bite when I was a kid so I would just fish for the chubs and have a great time

I caught about a dozen of those chubs last year at the narrows right off the access point in about 8-10 ft of water 1 pm to 5 pm.  I was using a Buckshot with a drop hook tipped with a small piece of night crawler and could not keep them off the hook.  Some of them had to be pushing 2 lbs.  Are they considered game fish??

Nooo!
  Are they considered game fish??

When I was a kid you used to be able to see the water boil with them in Hebgen, cast out past, then rip it through and snag 'em. Defenitly not as many in there anymore, I had heard they introduced a special breed of rainbow when stocking many, many years ago(Eagle River rainbows??  :-\) that was meant to specifically eat the chub fry... Who knows? Old timers like to tell stories  ;)

Not a game fish to my knowledge but I could be wrong. I used to catch tons of them off the point at the marina at Yellowstone holiday in the early 90s when I was 5 with small Rapalas or panther martins. I have heard there are some Kamloops rainbows in there that spawn in the fall with the Browns but I could be wrong about that also  ::)

It has an edit function but it can be a pain to use. PM me if you want and I can walk you through it or some alternatives.

You need to get an Eagle Claw inline reel that has 2:1 gear ratio and with a push of a button you can drop a 1/64th ounce jig. They're REEL sweat.

I plan on getting a better reel for this rod someday when the budget allows
