I work in Cleverdale, I always stop and look in the morning.  Sometimes its hard to see how far out the skim is but it's def. making ice!!! A week ago it looked great but the wind blew it around.

I hope it freezes.  im getting really sick of getting up at 4 am to drive 2 hours to ice fish.  i live a block from the lake.  i could rolll out of bed at 630 and be out by shelving rock by 7.  cmon old man winter!

Avg.  date is Jan. 21.  I think that will def hold true this year.  We fished until early April last year.  So that means, Lord willing, we'll have a little over 2 months to fish once she freezes.

The average freeze date is when the entire lake is frozen, including the North Basin which always takes longer to freeze. It takes a lot of cold weather to freeze LG and we haven't had nearly enough. Many smaller lake aren't even ready yet. :-\

I hear you.  I live by the North Basin, but I'm not getting my hopes up yet.  I'll be happy when I can get on a bay or two at the southern end.  My point is that I believe we'll be doing that sooner than most people think.

problem is with the cold comes the 10,000 mile per hour wind witch doesn't help.

Title: Re: The King
Post by: 5watchman5 on Jan 12, 2012, 07:42 PM
Yoo too huh?  Whew, that whole inch was a killer.  The snow today did nothing to the lake, the snow tomorrow won't do anything either.  With just a little skim here and there at last check in the bays and southern end, the snow will just blow right in the lake.  Wind coming Saturday, not good- but temps right around or below 0 Saturday and Sunday nights should get the bays locked up.  Main lake is another story, still need a good week of temps like that.
Thanks for the update.  I'm hoping to be on a bay by the 21st.

Confusious say "A watched lake never freezes"  -6 here in LG last night and no wind that I can see right now. still -1. Harris and Dunhams were basically open yesterday except for busted up ice close to shore in Dunhams and just out to Happy Family Island in Harris. Warner is frozen out to first point. Didn't get to Bolton.

As or right now:
Dunham's Bay: frozen around the point to Dark Bay
Million $: Good areas of ice with big open spots mostly along the West shore, ice goes up the lake a way
Harris/Warner: frozen at least to South end of Long Island, didn't drive around but could see ice
Basin Bay: about 2/3 ice
Huddle Bay: ice out to the islands
Sawmill Bay(Veteran's Park): ice out to end of Green Island

Wind was picking up and there are white caps on the main lake.

I'm heading out in about 15 min. to fish on the only spot that has enough ice to be on. I'll get back to you all later to let you know how we make out.
Good luck and be safe!

Well I got out on the ice today there was 3" of blcak ice, well anyway inthe 1st half hour of fishing I caught 15 Perch. I thought it was going to be a good but the fish just shut off, I threw everything I had in my tackle box but I couldn't buy a fish. We moved all around, we marked on the Marcum but no bites. I guess it could have been the weather front.

Nice job Wanderer.  That's fishing.  I've had the same thing happen more than once.  I prefer the afternoon bite where you were fishing.  Must've felt good to get out there and not break the ice on your LG season.   ;D

Wander, Pretty funny that PerchMD says "It's just a waiting game now" and you reply in the next post that you're going tomorrow.  Have a great time.  Let us know how you make out.
Went to Huddle Bay the only fishable ice on the lake, there WAS 3" when we got there, I can't guarantee that's whats there now after the rain. In the 1st half hr. or so I had 15 perch, I thought it was going to be a great day, well anyway the bite shut down. I threw everything I had in my tackle box to no avail. I couldn't buy a fish.

I went yesterday to Harris Bay & had a pretty good day, I was off the ice early had to go to 307 to get a Mr. Twister fillet knife. there was 3-4"  of ice w/3" of snow. I didn't fish to day I wanted to spend some time w/my girlfriend. I heard I didn't miss much, not a lot of action. I hope this warm up & rain doesn't ruin the ice we have.

harris was definetly full yesterday, not the hottest perch bite but fair. probably caught about 12 large mouth bass.  i decided to stay out late and see what the bit would be like at dark,  so at about 630 i hit a pig perch that measured just over 13". the only fish that bit after dark. i made the long walk back off the ice at 730. it was such a beautiful night.  when i returned home i found out that the warren county sheriffs had called my parents house to see if they had heared from me cause my car was there and they couldn't see me. they informed them that they were going to send a search party out if my car didn't move soon.
this situation makes me feel very safe knowing they are watching over us, but also puts me in a weird position. i would hate to be the guy that they sent several people out looking for while im cozy in my shanty doing a night fish.  what should a person do, it makes me not want to fish at night now. is there a time limit to fishing on lake george? again i appreciate that  they were there lookin out but i was fine.  my thought is to put my cell number on a card in the window of my car so that anyone with a concern can call, problem is the cold weather kills my battery life.
they watch that spot very closely i  have talked to many deputes there always looking for conditions and almost caught my father-in-law using his truck tire as a urinal lol

I went to Huddle Bay today & the bay took a big hit on Friday, the wind must be out of the NE because the ice looked broke about 75 yrds from the town dock. The ice eater on the dock to the right of town dock is starting to eat ice out toward the left, & if this rain coming in is a little heavy it will take a toll. Here are some pics.

I think your idea of leaving a brief note and cell number is a good idea.  However, I know what you mean.  I too have enjoyed some quiet nights under the stars while getting out of the deer woods.  As far as the Perch bite goes, I've never had much luck after dark thirty.  I've gotten so that I can usually tell when things have shut down by looking at the Vex.  Generally the'll be stacked up about 3 feet off bottom, but no takers.  Good job on catching the whopper at 6:30 though.  I'm hoping to get out on LG next Sat.

lots of ice in the back of huddle there. no grass but some good perch cruising through, just not many and they don't stick around.

ice on the other side of the transition where it broke up is thin. i'm light and even if i had been fishing with someone i probably wouldn't have headed towards the island today.

harris fished decent in the afternoon. most people left when the rain started and missed a good bit of the evening bite. tons of pumpkinseeds. personally giving it a few days to firm back up after this warm weather

I'm overlooking  Montcalm Pt and the Narrows and nothing but wide open water. As of 10AM today Huddle deteriorating fast.

At this point in time.............consi der the positive.............. the entire fishery is getting a much needed rest.

I'm betting that we're in for a repeat of the winter of 2001-02................no fishable ice.

If we don't have a serious "lock-up" by 2/15/12...................it's not going to happen and the Perch get a "pass"

I'm pulling for the Perch and the NY Giants............LOL!!

Welcome to IS, it's a great place give & receive info. Now in responce to your post, We can't control the weather, it is what it is! The problem is in this bad economy the bait shops that depend on a good ice fishing season are going to take a big hit w/no ice fishing on the king. So everyone out there if the ice holds up on the lakes that have good ice, try to do business with the local bait shops around Lake George to help them out.

I'm with you Wanderer.  I'm not pulling for the Perch or the Lakers.  I'm pulling for some heavy duty ice fishing pretty soon.  Don't worry about us, we'll catch our limits while you're watching the game.  One thing people fail to consider is night time temperatures.  Also, people who live in the Capital Region should be watching the forecast for the Lake George area on places like www.weather.com.  I don't know the zipcode for MDB area, but I check 12836, which is just a little bit farther north.

I'll tell you it's a little hairy out there, this morning there was 1/4" of ice then 0" to 2" of water then 3" to 5" of ice. When I came off the ice the water layer got a little deeper. A lot of wet feet out there today but not me in my new Predator Extremes from Cabela's. :)

Looking @ the temps maybe Monday lows supposed to be in the teens might tighten it all up?

Headed to the lower east side, Queen Eliz. Island area. Is there any fishable ice in the bays?
I don't know Queen Elizabeth, I do know Elizabeth Island, north of Kattskill Bay, Warner bay has ice but as of yesterday on the main lake nothing north of Paulist fathers has ice. Harris bay has ice I was out yesterday, a little spongy Huddle bay that I fished back on 16th broke up & was real sketchy, it might have tightened up but w/today's wind it might break up again.

I feel your pain, but you can't blame the lake, it's the weather patterns that cause it not to freeze. We just don't have that cold Canadian air coming down to us. I know, it's a terrorist plot, they are trying to keep us from being happy, & if we're not happy they're getting to us. ::)

As a Jets fan and a LG fisher I can certainly sympathize. I think it's brady's fault >:D.

Just got back.  Every thing was nice and tight.  Pretty steady bite all day long.  Managed 35 Keeper Perch, but had to leave at 2 for work.  Def. would have been a good evening, had it not been for work.  BTW, you can make it from MDB to Albany in 1 Hr.  but I don't recommend it  ;D ;D.  PM sent Wanderer

I agree w/you bird, it was pretty hairy coming off the ice & it didn't get cold enough last night to do any good. It was only 32* here & I'm a lot higher here so it might be quite a bit warmer around Lake George.

I stopped looking at the 10 day forecasts.  I got tired of the dissappointment.  its kind of like watching your tip-ups and waiting for them to go off.

at this rate we'll be practicing outside on march 1   ;D

I've been checking them everyday and Harris has had ice on it for awhile now but I can't tell how thick it is just by looking at it. im trying to convince my dad to drive me up from Long Island for a weekend of fishing but he won't go unless there's at least 4-5 inches black ice so any info is appreciated

My head is hanging low right now, I took a ride to Harris Bay this afternoon & what I saw made my heart sink. Yes there were some guys out there but I think the days are numbered & I mean like tomarrow, it's not worth it to me risk it, I'll fish other places. The ice broke into big slabs almost to the Happy Family Islands.

There's a nice Perch spot I know and a row boat with my name on it. As much as I enjoy walking on water sometimes it's better to float on it.

From web cam looks like southern end is starting to freeze, as is Harris Bay.  Pray for a clam day and night and maybe on the ice soon!

Actually yes, the Asian clam is one of the latest invasives to get into Lake George, millions have been spent trying to try to get rid of them and and at this point it looks like they are here to stay. Now they are lust trying to control them.

Another invasive that just showed up last summer is the spiny water flea; this one could hurt the fishery in a couple ways. One problem is they grab onto fishing line and form large clumps. I started finding them last August in the South Basin and brought a sample in for confirmation; kept finding them attached when I trolled in one area for a while, then more and more places. They haven't been a problem yet, just have to knock them off the line; floating and suspended weeds in August/September are a much bigger pain to deal with. In other lakes they have large numbers of fleas and can't fish with light line because of the fouling(I use mostly 6 lb trolling).

The other problem is that they will mess up the food chain, they eat other invertebrates that baitfish need for food; baitfish can eat the fleas but they have little nutrional value. We'll have to wait and see how bad they get, the lower nutrient levels in LG may limit them from what I have heard.
