Whats Thick Enough For You?
« on: Oct 01, 2008, 02:41 PM »
What does it take as far as Ice before you will start fishing this coming up year?I personally feel comfortable on 2" of HARD ICE,on a zero degree day,but Im also only fishing 4'-5' at the most until I see 3",then Im in search of deeper water, lets hear a few inputs on this......

I like to see 2-3 inches. I have fished on some pretty thin stuff before but only in shallow water hunting rainbows.

It will be 3" for me this year to start out.  Being inexperienced, I ain't takin' no chances below that until I learn to read the ice better.

2" at 0 degrees?  Hmmm..... only if it don't come until late Jan.!

This is tough subject for me. When i lived in the up I could walk on 2 inches. But here in the lower the ice isn't near as good. Last year I hardly felt safe on 4 because 2 of it was poor. Just didn't know if the 2 bad +2 good was every where. I just kept spudin and walking. And that's the answer, Where I can spud and walk.

I've been out on 1. Puckered too much to fish though   :o  I go on 4-5" generally and the only way I get uncomfortable is when it's 0 out and the ice is booming and crashing making ice.  :embarassed:

Since there is no such thing as "safe" ice, minimum of clear 4" for me.

kind of an instinct thing for me.
some days i'm ok with 2", on a very cold day.
some times 6" makes me feel hinky. it just depends. if it "just don"t feel right" i don't go out.
when i am on the thin stuff, i'll have a rope, spikes, PFD vest, wool clothes, etc.
have'nt gone through yet...
grandpa told me-"never wrestle with a pig. you both get muddy and the pig likes it".

i will get all dressed up, drive around, and shimmy out on 2" and maybe wet a line a ways off shore. The next day if its still maying ice i will get a little more brave and venture out father. Finally when it gets to 3"+ i will walk about anywhere on lake i know that doesn't have issues with springs if the entire lake locked up completely on the same night. 5"+ i am driving my quad. This is based on the temps starting and remaining well below the freezing point.
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."

I like ice that is just thick enough to walk out and kick a few holes in it to fish through . That way I don't have to carry an auger.   ::) ;D ;D ;)

Usually 4 to 6 inches of ice is good here in Maine. Just got to know where and avoid the moving water/ spring holes to be safe.

I go out when my friend goes first. He is bigger and if He don't go swimming.....I'm OK.
NEVER lied about the size of the fish I caught.....just remember them being BIGGER!!
