Hali lures and Big fish?
« on: Dec 25, 2008, 05:28 PM »
I've recently started using the Hali lure instead of smaller jigs for panfish.  I was wondering what others' experiences have been with the Hali.  I was also wondering if it hooks big fish.  My concern is that a larger fish like a laker or a walleye might inhale the entire lure rather than just the hanging hook, and not get hooked.  Do halis catch big fish too?  Thanks.

I like to take the hali drop chain with the glow bead and attach it to a forage minnow spoon.  The green glow is especially productive with lakers.  Put a small piece of smelt (where legal) or shiner.  Set your drag very light though as I have had lakers break the chain of on me.

Good Luck- Mike

I have caught lakers and walleye on Hali's and it is no different than any other ultralight situation. Set your drag right and enjoy the fight.
Another option is to remove the chain hook and make your dropper from a piece of fireline, or fluorocarbon.

Try the hali chains that are open on both ends. I use a size 8 red hook. Get both perch , sunnies and lakers.

Hali rigs a pretty versatile for any species. The get down to the fish quick, stir up the bottom, make noise, and can be baited with anything. Fat heads for walleyes, spikes for perch, plan hook with the glow bead for crappies, etc. If you hook a big fish use your drag appropriately.
