Looking for custom rod for jumbos
« on: Nov 19, 2014, 11:45 AM »
Girlfriend wants to get me a custom ice rod for Xmas so I'm on the hunt for the perfect one.  Rod will mainly be used for jumbo perch, usually fishing deep (30'+) with halis and spoons.   May also hook into trout or walleye with it.  Already have some good noodle rods so would love a super sensitive jigging rod. Maybe around 28" cuz it will be used in a shelter at times.  Been looking at a tuned up custom precision rod, or a thorne bros perch sweetheart. Anyone have any experience with these? Or any others? Thank you for any help!

Mine are a couple of St. Croix 24 ul's and a couple of homade rods made from turning down solid carbon R.C. frame poles. I love being able to add the custom action needed to detect super light bites down 45 feet.

I'm sure the Thorne Bro's is a great rod though!

I've had a Thorne Bros Perch Sweetheart for 3 seasons now, and I can't say enough good things about it. I added a tripwire (titanium spring bobber), and the Outside REC guides. Boy is it super light, and extremely sensitive. Mines 30" and fine in a 1 man hut.

Can't hardly beat a custom rod built by the guys at Glacial Lakes Outdoors. They know what it takes to catch jumbos and their rods are built for it! Plus, they are truly custom rods built to your specs. Length, action, color, cork, etc.... Check out this King Perch blank and the custom cork job! If this doesn't scream "Jumbo Perch" I don't know what does.

Using small tungstens with plastic or bait I love my TUC Bullwhip noodle. For small horizontals and 1/16  slender spoons or Foo's  a quiverstick is perfect.  For jiggin raps and pounding bottom with 1/8 ounce spoon and droppers my old Frabill Ultra-ice is as good as a custom rod.  All 3 in 32" with 10 series Bass Pro Qualifier spinning reels  with 4# Seaguar and Sampo'0' ball bearings to the final Asso leader to minimize line twist. Both for crappies n big perch. 32" because I fish outside and follow the schools.
