Could it be over?
« on: Jan 26, 2017, 01:51 PM »
It's the end of January and it will take at least a week of real cold to get it safe again. Next weeks forecast doesn't look very promising and it's getting late. March will be creepin up on us!   :'(

Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Heck no!

Here's a positive way to look at it.

If the daytime highs are fewer degrees ABOVE freezing and the nighttime lows are below freezing, then it averages out to MORE ice being made.

During the spring, it's the opposite where the daytime highs are more degrees above freezing than the nighttime lows are below, thus averaging a warm "thawing" trend.

Then add to the equation that the days are getting longer, so we get more sunlight and more shoreline melting as a result.

Sorry, we can't change what happens, but we can utilize the information to our best advantage.

As long as we stay safe (and dry)!

The water temp is there, the cold snap coming will lock it up for a while. You know your in the right place when people are quoting animal house.

Very possible. I'm looking forward to fishing locally for a change. All though I'm still fishing out of the freezer.

Last year we didnt get much good ice if I remember correctly ..until February. Last time I looked it was still January with cold coming next week. Big lakes may not freeze, but small ones will be safe again for sure.

Been fishing all over the Capital Region, got to get out and look. Saratoga Lake and Tomhannock were great last Saturday. Bite on Tommy was slow as usual but found a way on. Weather report I see is that it gets cold after tomorrow. Plenty of safe ice around been going 1-2 times a week since before new years

if you take the average temps for Jan. and Feb. they differ by 1 deg. 25 for Jan. and 26 for Feb. We'll have some nice ice in Feb. for sure. You can take that to the lake!

Here in Western NY we have a lot of open water and in some cases completely open lakes.   Starting from scratch is good, instead of refreezing candled (honeycomb) ice.   Fresh ice will be black and solid and all you need is 3" to have good hard ice.  Candled ice will not refreeze solid once the ice crystals start to separate and 5-6" can still be dangerous of giving way.  With the temps in the teens at night that are coming in the next few weeks we should have good black ice once again around mid February which should allow us to fish into March.  Wait for safe ice and stay on top.
