They are there....but they are an incidental catch.   You can't keep them so I know most people don't target them.

Ok. Um.  Seriously I've never seen a smallmouth caught threw the ice there or anywhere does anyone have a pick of a bass without the black line and green body .

I catch lots out of the deeper waters in Oneida. They don't real move around much and hit jigs close to the bottom.

My two biggest smallies came through the ice on the same day. Through the same hole a couple hours apart.

It wasn't Lake George though.

they are there, just that i noticed the bass in certain lakes do not bite too much in the winter. each body of water is different. for me, i go to paradox alot and only caught 1 bass through the ice and that was a smallmouth while i was jigging for perch. never caught a largie ice fisging there. other lakes i get bass constantly. i for one hate catching them for 2 reasons....

1) they tend to inhale your bait and swallow the hook alot and having that happen out of season
2) i do a bunch of tourny's throughout the entire summer, and would hate to accidentally kill em because of them swallowing the hooks

but then again, it is a blast catching 5,6,7, and 8lber's through the ice

as many years  as I've been on Lake George i can't remember catching or seeing anyone catch a smallie through the ice. Not saying they haven't, just haven't seen it, which is odd because they're are a buttload of them in there!
maybe they just follow the schools of smelt around or hang in deep water. I know of guys catching smallies in 70-80 ft of water in the summer.

we would catch them jigging for lakers if they were deep.. i did see a show on tv and they were putting a mini sub down through the ice up in canada.. the first fish it found with sonar was a big smallie just laying in the rocks..maybe they go dormant because they spawn so early in the spring? im just guessing

The few times I've stumbled upon them in the winter there was always another caught out of the same hole.
Jigging perch on Loon one day I caught 3 in a row immediately after drilling a hole in 20 fow.
On my flasher I watched every one of them come 5-10' off the bottom to smash my jig. Crazy 5 minutes, then back to perch fishing.
Total fluke every time that's happened, but what a blast on light tackle!

During the winter smallmouths pack together, infact in some small lakes it is believed that nearly all smallmouths will winter together in one location, if you find this location you could be in for the best fishing of your life but if you're even a few yards off of this "honeyhole" you won't catch anything as they do not move very much during the winter. As far as where these spots, when I've found them they are usually suspended about halfway down in the deepest parts of the lake and usually near some prominant vertical structure like a cliff, shelf or very steep drop-off. In lakes that lack any serious deep water (max depth less than 25ft.) you will often find them in much the same areas as you do during the summer just far, far less active. As far as baits go I've done the best with dead sticked minnows, lipless crankbaits jigged quickly but in very short strokes and jigging raps. Hope it helps.

I know they are schooled up in early spring(late april to mid may) so this makes sense. A buddy and I fished Mid May last year and caught 81 bass in 3 1/2 hours, all over a pound and some as big as 5. Best day I think I've ever had fishing, even though the weather absolutely sucked.

i found a group by accident a couple years back...

what a day... iced over 20 smallies... and they were all quality fish...

we were trying to find lakers... we fished the biggest hump on the lake... topped out around 10-15 feet and 80 feet on all the sides....

all the smallies were in 18-25 feet of water

Thats why they have a closed season during spawning I guess. Some places you can get ticketed for knowingly targeting bass at that time.
