Mn early ice trip recommendations

<< < (2/2)

Mr.Seaguar:
There are tons of smaller lakes in N MN that are unknown to the public basically. Go to the MN DNR website and use their Lake Finder section. Pick out a county and you can get lakes with species, population surveys, lake maps and stocking reports. I utilize this tool some to help whenever I want to try something different.

I've used those maps before while looking for some lakefront property. It's nice to give you a general overview of a lake and it's depth and fish population. So many of the waterfront that's left is on some 15ft max depth lake/pond. That's not a whole heck of a lot of good. Anyway it's an invaluable tool and I used it to narrow down some of my choices to Upper Red, Winni, and Lake of the Woods. For something more detailed, you've got to get one of those printed maps. I'll do that once I get my lake nailed down.
Is Winni more of a crappie and perch lake? Or is it good for walleye too? I know it's got the record Muskie. I've been to Judd's Resort website. I like that they sponsor this website. Is there another outfitter anyone knows about that may also be on top of it for that lake? I'd like to make a decision soon. Thanks.

Mr.Seaguar:
1. Winnie has great walleye fishing and perch fishing.
2. Its true that fisherman heading to Winnie are going after both species. If you are just interested in walleye, LOTW may be a better choice. I beleive that also has seperate regulations that allow you to keep walleye and sauger which gives you a larger limit.

Hard_H2O:
If you are looking for a nice early January trip look into a lake trout trip to Ontario. It is not that much further north than Minnesota and the fishing is fabulous. Lakers open the first of January. THere is also crappie, walleye and perch to be had.

Look at Sioux Narrows in Ontario. We stay at the Maple Leaf Motel. There is also Crystal Harbor resort among others.

mngonefishing:
try wheelers resort on lake of the woods. My brothers and i go ice fishing together at least 1 time per season. we went up to leach last year 6-9 jan. What a drag to say the least. on the 7th of jan it got up to 48 above. the only thing moving on the lake was the water sitting on top of the ice. (app 3-4 inches) needless to say most of us just went home. two of my brothers (the loony one's) went up to wheelers and caught some nice size fish. They said that there was 2 inches of water on the ice, but at least the fish were active ;D
