The perch talker works but be prepared for lots of tangles in your line as you jig ....I prefer a small buckshot rattle with a minnow head ....

Small Jigging Rapala usually does pretty well on 'eyes and larger panfish.  Tends to keep the dinks down and besides, you stay warmer having to jig it all the time!  This past season, I started using Jigging Rapalas in the boats for 'eyes and was surprised by how well they worked if fished right.

Not saying it’s my first go to but I got these little jigs called hockey puck last year. Think there for panfish Iv done really well off them last and so far this year with perch. Orange and green with a spike or 2. Let them settle in the mud and slowly pick it up. Must resemble a hatch or somthing

Smalles puppet minnow with a live perch minnow on each hook... Looks like an awful mess but it slays the yellow bellies

On each hook point (5 minnows)?

I assume 3 minnows: front, back and treble?

I'm gullible enough to try this with a jigging rap...

Do you have trouble with the chain breaking on the Hali ?  My buddy does really well on them but they seem to break or pull apart a lot on him.  Do you modify it at all ?

No problem.. Caught some big pickerel and bass.  I do change the hooks every now and then from digging them out of fishes mouths with hemostats.. ;)

Never, ever broken a chain on a hali style spoon, but I've also never caught anything huge on one, either, so never really put one to a hard test 🤷‍♂️

I use the cheapo Johnsons, though, not the actual Halis.

If I had to chose one perch lure to use on any NY lake, reservoir, or pond it would be a silver/blue , 1  1/2 inch Kastmaster.    What I would tip it with would depend upon the what part of the season and what body of water  I was fishing..     ,

yes only 3 minnows sorry for not clarifying that.... I run 3 puppets on saginaw bay so when a action gets hot and heavy and a minnow falls off I still have another one down there or two to keep action going so perch don't seem to be as picky as walleye or some other predator fish and they'll hit that nasty mess no problem it just looks like a school of minnows the front and back minnows I hook through the tail and the bottom minnow I hook right behind the head
..... So yes initial baiting is crazy that's nine minnows to start with but it seems like the great big giant perch like to suck up them dead minnows off the bottom so sometimes I'll take a dead minnow hook it with a single hook and no split shot and just let it sit down there on the bottom to see if I can scoop up one of them pigs

1/10 oz. Swedish pimple in in either gold or silver with chartreuse sticker but I mix the colors up frequently.  When I need to downsize I use a single hook and stick to Cati Jigs, either a Lightning or Football jig in White/Blue or Chartreuse/Orange but again mix the colors up.  I like to tip with minnow or waxies. Just my two cents but good luck!

I'll almost always start with a Perch colored Hali Jig tipped with either a minnow hooked through the head or 3 spikes. For the chain i use Orange & Black, always a great starter lure for any body of water when we're perch fishing. I'll upgrade to something bigger like a rapala or kastmaster once we determine the size of the fish that are biting. Best of luck & tight lines to all
