Massachusetts > Ice Fishing Massachusetts

It Has Begun

bogtrotter:
I am pleased to announce the start of the 2021-2022 icefishing season in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

As promised (see my last post "Pre Season Ice Report"), I went back to the Savoy State Forest today to check out Burnett's Pond and also get in a little skiing.

Much to my surprise, Burnett's is about 95% covered (except for the "back section" on the southern end) and has 3" of ice on it.

I brought my chisel, jigging rod, a container of bedraggled leftover worms and fished there from 12 to 3 PM.

The weather was overcast, in the upper 20's, a bit breezy (although the wind subsided later in the afternoon) and with intermittent flurries, with about 4" or so of snow on the ground on the way down to the pond.

Fishing was slow, and my rustiness cost me a few fish, but I eventually landed three so-so (8" to 9") perch and a middling-sized (14") pickerel.

Needless to say, I'm ecstatic to be able to kick off my ice fishing season this early.

After picking up my gear and walking back to my car (actually, my wife's van), I also managed to squeeze in a 20 minute jaunt out and back skiing on New State Road  - - with only one car passing me the whole time - - before driving home.

Awesome to hear, hopefully bump into you again this season.  Pontoosuc is starting to ice over in the bay areas.

ICEHOLE:
Congrats on the first outing I'm excited to get out a few times this year.
