This spring my 2yr old started fishing with me. I'd put him in my back and we'd fish small streams for brookies. He'd usually be good for about an hour, sometimes if I got lucky he'd fall asleep and I'd get some extra time on the water in.

Today I took him down to the family pond and he got his first trout through the ice - by my eyes I'd say a healthy 16" or so specimen that's probably on its second or third year. He's been talking about it all day - "The trout jumped up out of the hole and then splashed me on its way back down!" is what he keeps saying in broken, toddler gibberish.





I think we're on to something!

Great fish and something he won’t forget, I remember getting my first trout through the ice in 1986 on ashumet pond in Falmouth ma, a 16in brown trout that was the coolest looking fish I had ever seen since open water all I caught until that point was a rainbow.  I can remember my dad and grandfather coaching me along

Awesome times!  It is great having an interest that your children share for the pure enjoyment and the opportunity for so many impactful, life lessons.

That's awesome! My oldest was about that age when I started him on the ice and he's 15 now and I can't get him off the ice.... Well done!!
