Bass & Perch w/ slush!! (*Underwater view!*
« on: Jan 31, 2024, 02:36 PM »
Last weekend, I drove north looking for good ice.

Ice was good (~6"), but there was 2" of slush on top. Luckily, I thought to bring my slush boots (Baffin Titan rubber boots) - otherwise it would have been miserable...I'm sure there are other good rubber boots....that's just what I have.

Key thing for this trip (other than good boots) was finding isolated patches of fairly thick, standing, mostly green weeds.  That seemed to be what the fish were relating to. I checked a bunch of other holes that looked like the surface of the moon: barren + lifeless.  Some holes had weeds that more mostly dead or lying down....and those weren't as good either.  Got some decent underwater video, too!  Can see exactly what's going on down there....green vs. dead weeds, bugs scouting around & fish, too.

Check it out if you have some time...

Nice job. Ice conditions have been sloppy this past week after some rain snow mixed. Should firm up this week

Yes, I'm hoping for less sloppy ice conditions this weekend (maybe too optimistic there)....next week does look better...

Great stuff loved the video. Under water camera how does it work when ice has snow or water isn’t so clear?

Thx, guys!  I appreciate it!

Under water camera how does it work when ice has snow or water isn’t so clear?

You need 2 things for good video....good light penetration & clear water.  Video quality drops dramatically after sun gets low (~4PM) & anything other than clear water.

For me, looking at underwater video while I'm fishing (different than trying to record a video), I can tolerate less clarity & still be able to see well enough to make it worthwhile.  Shallow, clear water during the day is no problem - it's everything else that can be a challenge.

The other thing is that in water deeper than ~20' (or suspended fish deeper than ~20'), the camera becomes more of a pain to deal with than it's worth.  It's very easy to tangle up with hooked fish....even dropping lures down to 20'+ can tangle on the A/V cable.  In that case, a flasher or fish finder is more useful.
