Very glad we didn't let the sketchy edges keep us off the ice today! We had to do a little more walking than initially anticipated; as our only safe access point was a bit out of the way. After a 2 hour drive from the Bx we were determined to find a way on and man did our perseverance pay off!
My buddy and I have fished this body of water a couple times and were pretty confident in our game plan. We had decided on setting up in and on either side of a channel, just beyond where the river dumps into the lake. We concentrated most of our spread in the slightly deeper water inside of the channel with a couple set shallower over the weeds just outside.
We got our first flag about an hour after sunrise and had pretty consistent action till we took up right around 4pm. All in all we ended up with 7 Northerns and 3 Perch. Not sure if the perch hit those big shiners because they saw the hooks and figured a bucket was a better deal than a pike minefield or maybe they had balls the size cantaloupes.
Early in the day the Pike were in about 8' of water. As the day progressed, they trended shallower to the weeds between the channel and the point. We used large shiners and set them about halfway up from the bottom. All fish released to fight another day.
All in all it was an awesome day. We lost a couple, including what would've been the days best, but the ones we got more than made up for it. I even managed one on the jigging pole!
