Title: Name #1 top jigging lure for walleye I.Y.O.
Post by: stuckinohio on Dec 13, 2020, 07:09 AM
My wife is a great walleye fisherman in open waters but neither her or I have any luck on the ice. Maybe because we are novice or maybe location.
I dont know which it is but having the best lure could at least cut the odds down on one side of the question.

If you could only have one lure for poor water clarity, which would it be?

If you only could have one lure for lightly stained water, what would it be?
Lure weights?

Cleat water in our area is non-existent.

Thanks for the help. I will be building a set of lures off the recommendations given here.

I like to use pimples 3 or 4 inches long, can't tell you the weight, I just go by size, lol.

Length works too. Thanks  :)

First off, we are going to end your walleye "ice" curse, this winter!  Second, if I had to pick a lure for real stained water, it would have to be a rattle trap or buck shot, something with a rattle in it.  The sound will definitely help.  In lightly stained water I would use a Swedish pimple it either chartreuse orange or green.  In clear and semi-clear water it would be silver pimple with green, blue or red prism tape on the back.

Thats a great amount of info. Thank you again.

Weight lure weights? or is that based on depth for you?

I guess I'm the only schmuck who still uses standard gumball jigs in either 1/4 or 3/8 ounce with red or pink colors, bonus points if you can find ones with red hooks. Works for me.

Rippin Raps are about the noisiest lure I know of for stained water. I'm a fan of Shiver Minnows and Blade baits too
I usually tip a minnow head on the front hook.

I am asking for #1 from individuals. If thats your number 1 then thats what I am putting on the list.
I havent ordered anything yet so thanks for including this. I appreciate it. What works all the time for some does not work every time for all ;)

I have had some great days with the chubby but overall the walleye flyer has probably put more walleye on the ice than anything else.

That's just a yellow foam slip bobber that's followed all the way down the line to the jig.

I ... Being a tip up guy (for life) I took great notice of this highlighted hook type/size.
I HATE trebles BUT...I have never even seen a #16 treble. I am intrigued. I am putting this in the forefront of my mind, till I can finish my list.
Thanks :)

Those small trebles find their way into the nooks and crannies. I used to make quick strike rigs for pike and musky that we sold and ours were size 8 with a straight point. People always wanted bigger but the small work better

My number one for stained water is definitely northland whistler jig in glow. a 1/4 ounce tipped with a minnow is my go-to but ill occasionally use the 1/8th in shallower water.

Just tried to pull up "walleye flyer", and it takes me to Lindy's rigs, but can't find a walleye flyer.  Where did you find them?
I have a quite a few so haven't looked to buy any the last few years,  must have been discontinued. The closest I can find is a fooflyer but they are smaller than the walleye flyer. Basically a swim jig that can be set on the bottom but has the lure pointing up, really helps with hookups............... ...................... .................... The pic is of all the jigs I use when ice fishing and some some summer fishing as well. What they all have in common is when you set them on the bottom the hooks are always up which has improved hook sets for me substantially  This is for a very slow bite mostly in the winter, slowly drop them to the bottom and jig them maybe 1/2" every 4-5 minutes, been using this system for over 15 years and it has worked well. Like any presentation it doesn't always work but when the bite is really slow it usually still manages to put a few fish on the ice. Slow poke jigs on the top, walleye flyer on the left, smack jig on the right. The smack jig was made locally but this guy moved away years ago so not available either. I believe the slow poke jigs are still available from a company called Bait Rigs.

It is a slip bobber but the line slide is under water so doesn't freeze up, also the line pulls through easier because it doesn't have to go up and over like other slip bobbers. Great for kids, you set the depth for them and it goes back to the same depth every time. These were called ice busters I believe but I use mostly venom floats now, work the same way. Most of the ones in the pic are venom floats, different foam sizes for different size lures.

Those ice busters were absolute lifesavers for bobber ice fishing in MN. I haven't seen them for sale around here (IL) but bobber icing isn't a big issue here most of the them.

The fact you can trim them down to adjust buoyancy is a huge plus, too.

That's the nice thing about the venom you can slide the foam up or down which changes buoyancy or I have a couple sizes and tie up a few of each size (6rods) when I rig them before the season.

Ah, that is sweet. The old busters you just had to cut, so once they were set, there was no going back to putting something heavier on them.

I like my ice bobbers just barely buoyant enough to float the bait, so you can see upward strikes on them better. I still have some busters, but they are in storage 1000 miles away from here 😬
