Pike pictures, need some info
« on: Jan 25, 2007, 03:25 PM »
My uncle is claiming he caught the pike in the pictures below and I know that he is full of it.  I wanted to find the origin of the pictures so I could prove he was a fool.  Does anybody know the background of these?

Thanks

Both are well circulated.

The top one has had many "homes" including Mille Lacs and Lake of the Woods.  I seriously doubt either are true.

The bottom one was rumored to come from my homesite, NodakOutdoors.com, but again, I highly doubt the poster took the picture!

How Damn Big of a Flippin Hole would it take to pull that hoss through ???  I dont think holes that big would be legal anywhere

I'm pretty sure no one knows the origins of either photo. I've seen them everywhere.

Thanks

The pictures are from Holland.

There is an article in the most recent Ice Fishing Magazine that goes into the rumors (all internet) about the origin.

Holland has a strict catch and release policy that allows huge pike to grow there.

There are several pictures of different pike that are all huge!   Great article.

Saw a debate about that second picture on another site.

The majority of people thought it was fake "because look at the size of the head compaired to the body".

I'm pretty sure it's genuine.

It's head looks so big because the mouth is wide open and the top lip/jaw is flaired up.

A pikes mouth only does that when it's eating something.

Had the exact same thing happen in Canada except I was reeling in a walleye.

Can any of you older guys remember the article, probably close to 50 years ago, about a huge pike in 'Rainy River' ?? between Minnesota and Canada that took a huge pike, I think around 15 pounds, a guy had hooked and photos showed teeth marks a foot across? I was pretty young then but that article stuck in my mind all these years. From recollection, they estimated a pike with a 12" bite nearing 100 pounds.  Would like to hear from people who fish up there and if there are still stories of monster pike circulating? Always wondered if it was a hoax or if there are indeed pike that large in North America.
