Sketchy Edges
« on: Jan 13, 2018, 12:21 PM »
Checked the ice in NW RI this morning. Edges were in bad shape but main ice still solid. Was able to get on on the south side of pond. Might want to bring planks if going tomorrow. Didnt cut any holes so cant confirm thickness.

Waterman didn't look good when I drove by. Spots of open water not just on the edges. Hoping to find a spot to go tomorrow.

10-20 FEET?! Wow. You'll need a pretty long extension ladder to get out there. That sucks. I'll take a look at Lincoln Woods tomorrow. Hoping to fish Monday am.

Not quite so bad at wallum, still, 3 to 6 feet of clear water between shore and ice.

Also, wallum is up about 8 inches in height from Wednesday some of the erosion is due to the increased spread of the water as well.

Wallum being a deeper lake, with, in most areas , sharp drop offs, it would be less susceptible to water level rise than some others.

I think tomorrow AM will see most of the shore iced over again, and with the floating base we have already, i would not be surprised if it was safe in many spots for MLK day.

I will update tomorrow on wallum at least.

I passed silver spring in NK. Major open  edges with slop on top. Other ponds on the way were half open. Im going in the AM somewhere. I agree much more damage, way worse storm than forecast but it will tighten up ! Will report . FF

Over night the spot i monitor at wallum added 3-4 inches of solid clear ice, In 8 hours over night!. 30 feet south of that, where there is a little drain pipe, it is still open though. I have not looked at the boat ramps, so ymmv.

The whole lake looks frozen from what i can see. But lots of cracks at edges that refroze over night

Solid ice in south kingston today. No problem at all once you were on it. At the end of the day the edge was looking good. Im sure tonight will help a ton. I jumped on silver spring on the way down. The ice was in good shape there to.  Check your ponds before the snow. Be safe FF

When  drove by watermans yeaterday it look ok, edges were my main concern there and the guy at big bear said his buddy who lives on there said the edges were bad. Wilson's wasn't too bad but needed a plank to get on

Fished a place in Central Mass that had 4-11" solid black ice yesterday. The funny thing is the edge was 11" solid.
Just add water.

Wordens this AM: edges were perfect. Over all ice conditions were nice, a little bit of gray ice in places and the rest was black. Thickness varied from 4 to 9 inches. There was also open water in the middle.

Walked out on Wilson's yesterday from my cousins place.  He is across from the boat ramp.  Edges were solid. Didn't have the auger with me though.
Keep those holes clean and smooth

Barney and Lincoln woods edges about 2-3 inches...enough to get out...drilled a hole about 50 ft from shore solid 8 inches...snow will help insulate and give us traction...giddy up! Check as you go and be safe!

Fished Wallum yesterday.  Edges were still a little sketchy. Once we got out 5-10 feet it was fine. 5 inches ice black ice.

I was on Wallum yesterday too, thought I was alone out there.

If your out there again this season and see a guy with some bamboo and a cheap tarp for a wind brake, come on over and say hello.

Anyone hit Stump in the last couple of days and have a report on the edges? Relatively new to the freshwater game in RI so is the dam parking lot the only access? Seems like it would be sketchy with moving water so close by. Hope to see some of you out there if its safe though!

South west corner or stump near fire department has a boat launch with easy access and tons of parking
