for those of you who use perch eyes, do you dispatch them before taking the eyes out?

I just watched a TV show where the host pulled a Perch out of the hole  removed the lure, tore an eye out and dropped the Perch on the ice. I was pretty disappointed since I thought this TV personality was one of the most ethical on TV.  ???

If I saw that on TV, I'd be sending that host a message advising how i felt. That's the ype of stuff that PETA eats up

Jason Mitchell Outdoors. Nine minutes into the show he caught a 12 inch Perch, popped an eye out and dropped the fish on the ice where it was flopping around.

How someone doesn't see something wrong with gouging the eye out of a living critter is beyond me.  Good luck going forward.

The fish is being harvested for food.
Is leaving a fish with both eyes to “flop about on the ice and die” any less cruel?
Although it may be distasteful to watch, I’m sure it happens a lot!

You let your fish flop on the ice and suffocate to death? Or are you a torture and release kind of person? It's pretty easy to sit and point fingers. In reality the eyeballed fish die quite quick compared to the ones "suffocating to death"

This is the second time I've seen Jason do this. Maybe that's because I watched the same episode last year. I'm sure it happens a lot on the ice. No worse than tearing the head off a minnow or killing a deer with an "unethical neck shot" like I do. :o

Unreal.  I dispatch and bleed any fish I keep to eat, which is most.    I just don't understand why you'd keep a fish to eat and pop the eyes out before dispatching rather than the other way around.  Explain your logic...

Believe it or not the majority of fisherman I've seen do not dispatch fish. He shouldn't have included the flopping fish in the video but not something I'm willing to crucify the guy over.  All fishing activities could be seen as unethical if one wants to humanize fish. The average Joe doesn't seem to humanize fish as much as furry critters for some reason, personally I'm somewhere in the middle of average and your view.

Stop for a minute, and just think of all the perch swimming around with glasses or eyepatchs. It's just reprehensible. Just as bad as all those frogs in wheelchairs after the Friday nite frog leg fry.   :(

Watching a hunting show tonight and they showed wringing birds necks to finish them off on a couple different ones, probably shouldn't have made it on their, but I'm sure most people seeing it know they're keeping them from suffering.

Not cool IMO.

If your gonna keep them, at least have the respect for the fish to kill it as fast as possible.

This thread is highly entertaining to me.  I never thought of myself as unethical when ripping an eye out of a live fish that I planned to later bread and fry or bake.  I also never thought of myself as unethical by throwing a fish directly onto the ice prior to eating it.

I'm extremely laid back and to each their own but I don't believe that those are animal cruelty violations or unethical choices.

I was actually asked last season why I don't kill my fish if I plan to keep/eat them.  Thought it was a weird question and still do a bit.  If you see my fish out there flopping on the ice feel free to go up and bonk them to death as I just don't have the heart to do something so cruel...hahaha

Stay safe guys!

this is kinda funny - I've taught all 3 of my sons to ice fish on our pond and we use bluegill eyes for bait. We do not dispatch the fish, we dont even eat the fish as they're all stunted. We pile the fish on the middle of the ice and raccoons eat them. I've never bled a fish out, never had a reason to do so. On the ice, I pack fish I keep in a sack or bucket full of snow or ice chippings to keep them fresh and fillet them alive. I must be a savage beast

Most fish I catch get thrown on the ice or in a bucket...and usually die within a few minutes. Rigor mortise ( froze to death). No bonking required.

Only time I've used eyes for bait is Smelt fishing. Never paid much attention if they were dead or not. Probably acquired same demise as above.

And probably not much different than having a hook ripped through their lip then hauled straight up through the water column at blazing speeds. Ever notice those bladders on them Perch?  :woot:

I usually give keepers a smack on the head with my leatherman but more to keep them from flopping and drawing attention to the fact that I'm catching than any worry of the fishes feelings. It's also easier to get the eye out of a fish that not flopping around. As long as you're within your bag limit, do it however makes you feel better.
