I have enjoyed reading this thread for a long time now. Great ideas and variations! Indeed Smitty cool deal! I thought of this thread when I saw this pic and had to share it.

Light weight aluminum and a Tote Goat to push it along. Built in trays. I guess he puts the tent and auger on top. Sweet.

Gotta thank you again Smitty, the sled is awesome.  Put 5.5 miles on it yesterday according to the GPS, all on foot.  Had one small mishap crossing a 2' gap (ski tip got caught, but I build it with short skis so it's my fault, not the design), but after "fishing" out the items that went for a swim, I was on my way again.  Honestly don't think I could have ever attempted that with a normal sled - for those of us without a four wheeler (yet!  Please, please, please Santa if you're watching!!)  these thing are a Godsend.
Your very welcome, I'm glad you like it.

Nice sled, but I think it cost more than $15 to build.

Actually, I have the skis, wood scraps, mower parts and PVC to build the exact same sled for zilch (just missing cushion for the cooler). Posted it as I thought some might like it and get some ideas. Sorry to encroach on your thread. Have a nice Summer.  ::)

I came across this listing on the  c**igs site, had to laugh and wonder was this an antique Smitty Sled???  I think it is the base of an old cutter sleigh.

This is a Great sled, I Especially  like the way it all tears down into a neat bundle. It will fit very nicely in the back of My little car [Ford Escort}.
Today I went to the Hollis New Hampshire Flea Market and bought a pair if Ski's for $10. There were many vendors selling skis there. I probably could have found them even cheaper but I took the first reasonable ones for the intended purpose. The Lady was asking $15 but let Me have them for the cheaper price. I told Her I was going to make a sled out of them for Ice Fishing.
Next time I go to Home Depot I'll get 2x4 and some Bolts to build it!. I Can't Wait for Ice!!

Got mine done this winter.
Went with a hard top as I don't have a jet sled to top load.

(Image removed from quote.)

all items came from my garage so no outlay of cash.
didn't have eyebolts so went with holes in hard top to hook bungies.

now if Smitty would post plans for a $15 home made flasher, I would be set.

Now THIS is a perfect platform on which to install a Hub style shelter !!!  Just need to match the floor dimensions of the Hub and probably hinge the platform in themiddle for transport ease.  Think I'll try one for my Hub this Winter.

I built my auger rack for my smitty sled today. The only thing I don't like are the forks on top of the posts. They are not secured very well. The threads are too coarse to fasten with any nuts. So, for now I just have them screwed into blocks of wood inside the top caps.

I modified the forks so I could bolt them to the top end cap. They were wood screw threads and I had then cut off and a bolt was welded in place. The welding melted the red rubber off of the forks. I had to by some plasti-cote the recover them.

Iceballs, I like your idea. I have used a smitty style sled for a long time. The thing is, you drag it out on the ice, unload it & then it sits there. Why not build it into a shelter? With a deck on top, you could build small sides onto it, then you have basically a tub. Then build some sort of flip over that fits the platform. Gota start daydreaming again.

I've only been on this forum a short time, but I have spent nearly every waking moment since joining studying this thread  ;D

We are lucky here in Yellowknife to have a scavenging area at the dump where gently used lumber, conduit and mattresses are there for the taking. I'm making a trip this week, and I will be posting pics of my Smitty-Sled when complete!

Good luck and have fun building it. I am still trying to figure out the best way to transport the whole thing to the lakes across parking lots. I have a 2 wheel dolly that might work but then I have to haul it once at the lake. I tried wheels on the back of the sled and it would work but I need to have them removable once at the lake. They are removable but I don't like taking too much time doing things like that once I get to the lake. Hit the lake and I want to drill as soon as possible.
