I built my Smitty Sled last year and I wouldn't trade it for any other sled.  Skis from Goodwill for $5, scrap wood and about $8 in hardware.  Not real fancy compared to others but it absolutely works!

they all look cool, but think if you have to pull it through deep snow it will be more like a plow if it's to low to the ice.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

the skis will ride on top of the bulk of the snow ...... i've been out with more than a foot of snow and had no issues  ;)

in areas with crazy heavy snowfall i would think instead of a 2x4 or 2x6 you might want a 2x10 on the skis to lift the platform up.

Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain.

I've been looking to build my own Smitty sled this year. I've been wondering how are you guys attaching the blocks of wood to the skies? I would assume your using some type of bolts or even lag bolts. Whats the best way to do this.

I put deck screws up thru the bottom, and countersink them.

I used 3" decking screws countersunk from the bottom of the skis.  On one model I epoxed over the heads to help protect the screw heads from rusting, but that's just overkill.  My latest rendition just has countersunk screw heads.

KB where does the drive motor mount?

I thought that to myself as well.  I figure my next add on would be integrating my auger motor and a steering wheel!

I mounted Rubbermade Fast Track Rails on each side of my jet sled. They come in 4 ft lengths, and the sled is 4 ft. The rubbermade hooks install and remove with ease, so that I can remove for transport. It is awesome to have my auger and shelter out of the sled, so I have organized gear. Thanks for the ski idea smitty! I have to have the sled elevated so that the auger can ride on the side, so I used 2X6's and set the 2X4 on top of them for even more height.

Very nice Bill- can you post a few close up pictures of the Rubbermaid track and hooks? I love the idea of the auger and Fatfish on the sides of the sled!

There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the ice looking like an idiot.

Thats a great idea. Instead of a jet sled, I bought a smaller mixing mixing tub from Lowes and wasn't sure how I was going to fit everything in.
