Title: ....... Fish Trap Tips ........
Post by: LoneWolf on Jan 11, 2007, 05:21 PM
Someone had removed my original thread (from Oct 27, 2004) full of usefull info so I'll start over again.

Click here for Old FT Tips Board (http://www.iceshanty.com/archives/forum2/index.php?topic=14164.0)

Last season I recieved a few PM's asking advise on rigging the Fish Traps. Yesterday I recieved an e-mail with a few questions so I figured I would start a post with some tips and hopefully others will add to it. ;D

1)Instead of tying the pull rope thru the holes I added SS eye bolts and SS fender washers.
2)On the rear I did the same (SS eye bolts, fender washers) for a tie down point for my anchors on windy days. I use brass snap connectors tied to the end of the anchor ropes for a quick connect/disconnect.

Yesterdays questions were regarding the transport of an auger on the Fish Trap. Years ago I learned the hard way how much oil drips out the exhaust and stains the tent. I came up with two solutions which work when combined. The first was to switch to Opti 2 oil. Reduced the smoke, less oil dripping from the exhaust and revs higher. The second was to get a gym bag with two zippers that just fit over the power head. I slip the bag over the power head and pull the zippers and the dripping is contained. At the end of each season I wash it and I'm good to go next season. One extra tip is to keep the blade cover on the auger when transporting. Here are a few pic's :

It's hard recreating all the tips but here's another for rod holders.

I wanted a rod holder to keep the rod within easy reach and easily detachable. The one I found and liked the best was Outdoor Creations Hot Rod Holder. Here's some pics :

Lonewolf, I'm new here and I found your tips to be very helpful, then they disappeared. I finally found them in the archives at http://www.iceshanty.com/archives/forum2/index.php?topic=14164.0 (http://www.iceshanty.com/archives/forum2/index.php?topic=14164.0)

They weren't even there a week ago. IceShanty retrieved them and restored them to the archives.
I had recieved many PM's asking where the thread was as members wanted use the many tips from other members, mods and myself.
I'm still looking into who had removed it.

what lub. to use on tent poles?..I have tried taking poles apart and  sanding inside edge...everything from wd 40 to car wax...they all help...did anybody find something new to try? ;) ;)

I've found car wax to work the best. Over the years I've tried silicone, WD-40, etc. but the car wax is quick, clean and simple. Also you don't stain the tent with the car wax like you can with the spray on products ... they can drip out on the tent.

I bought a guide last month, used car wax on the poles and it was a big improvement . I also waxed the slides for the seats. New shanty, new Vex, no ice :(

Want to let everyone know that my idea of using medium size binder clips (rather than the supplied screws) to hold the tent onto the sled has worked great. No slippage in the tent from wind or use. I have loaded the tent into my pickup many times this winter and the binder clips have held fast. Also, no rust so far. So, this spring I will pop the clips off, take the tent off and store inside and store the tent in my shed. No mouse prroblems eating holes in the fabric. If anyone else has tried it, let me know how they worked for you.

As a new owner of a Fish Trap X2, I was interested in the preferred way to setup and take down the trap. I e-mailed Clam, and the engineers replied with the following recommended procedure:

Set-Up

1) From outside the shelter, standing on the side that will be the rear wall when erected, start with the  lowest hoop in the stack and work upwards, pulling on each hoop from outside the tent and until you feel the buttons engage.

2) From either side/end of the shelter, flip them all forward.

3) Go inside and install the Roof Spreaders, then the Front Spreaders, and finally the Rear Spreader/s (Spreader count varies with shelter style/configuration – smaller shelters use only a Rear Spreader).

Take-Down

1) Remove all Spreaders and lay in the bottom of Base. For Adjustable Spreaders, snug the Tension Knobs after compacting so that they don’t vibrate out during transit.

2) Start with the rear wall Hoop and compress both buttons and retract the Hoop, then the same with next inward Hoop, and then the third inward Hoop.

3) Step out and swing the Porch Hoop on the previously retracted Hoops while at the same time disengaging buttons and retracting.

4) Go around the shelter and tuck the Tent material in between the rested Hoops the best you can to keep the Tent material from dragging during transit – a Travel Cover works great here to hold everything together.
Note: Make sure that the Tent material is clear of the Canopy Brackets to minimize rubbing.

Anybody that has a new Fish Trap with the swivel seat I suggest putting some loc-tite on the screws that go into the actual chair from the long black cylindrical tubes. This will prevent seat wobble and the screws from working loose.

My original post from last year got lost too. I secured my tent with office binders (the medium size) rather that using screws and it worked great. I pinched off the chrome pinchers to make a cleaner install. Squeezed the pinchers back in at the end of the season and took them off. This allowed me to take the tent off and store inside away from critters in my shed. I would recommend this method as it held fine all season. No holes in the tent from screws and I think the binders actually hold better than the screws.

LoneWolf,
Thanks for the Outdoor Creations rod holder pics!!!! I added two of them to mine. They are pretty nice! I am not throwing stones so please don't take any offense to this but, you use a cover for your auger to catch any oil that may drip out. Over the course of a season of use and being stored, do you accumilate alot of oil in that bag? Just wondering how you go about cleaning it? I like the idea, I just have some reservations about it. Do you wash it in the washing machine? Doesn't that gunk up the machine any? What about the waste water being contaminated with oil??
Title: Re: ....... Fish Trap Tips ........
Post by: Hollywood703 on Dec 07, 2007, 01:47 PM
I am not speaking of what lonewolf does, but my speculation of this:

If he isnt planning on using it for anthing else but to keep engine oil from getting all over, why would it need to be cleaned?
If there is a lot of oil coming out of the auger 1....have it checked as something is wrong and 2, soak up the oil with paper towel etc. the only issue would be leaving a pool of oil in the bag for a length of time. Once again you should only be talking a little bit of oil from the exhaust......otherwise, something needs to be fixed. This is just a fix, so that the little oil drips dont end up in your shanty. I would venture to say that that bag will last 7-10 years before needing to be cleaned unless extremely heavy usage..
Title: Re: ....... Fish Trap Tips ........
Post by: LoneWolf on Dec 10, 2007, 09:11 PM

The reason for the bag is to catch any oil that may come from the exhaust. Since I've been using the Amsoil 100:1 there is very little but there is some. I have no stains on my Trap or in my truck and it's on and off in seconds.
As for washing it does not go in my washing machine. I simply use a rag with a little Simple Green and wipe it out .. there isn't much.

Thanks

sorry no pics but i did make a hinged shelf out of 1x6 , attached hinges to front of tub and a hinged support leg for the front of shelf , i place my aqua view on this so its easier viewing instead of looking way down on the ice and into the tube for monitor. and when done or travelling just remove the aqua view and fold the shelf over back towards the seat.

I have a clam pro and use 1 dual mantle lantern for light and heat.  I used to use a propane lantern but that would not burn as well in cold temps.  If it is cold out....zero degrees or less I recommend two lanterns or a buddy heater.  I fish alone so has anyone out there figured out a way to compartmentalize everything.  I currently use 2 -5 gallon buckets to hold everything including my limit of fish when I come off ice.  So my gear gets slimed cuzz it has to share a bucket with all of my monster ::) fish.  Any ideas on a "manual" auger holder?  I absolutley hate it when my auger falls off my sled.....and I don't notice till I am on the other side of teh lake >:(

I don't understand as to what side ? The eye is on the outside of the tub.

As for the poly rope .. I splice it ( weave it). You can tie but it won't hold unless you epoxy it.

Oops.  I meant to ask what size.  I checked some hardware stores and I was having some difficulty finding a decent diameter bolt that was short enough to lock down.  Do you use a lot of washers and does the bolt stick out on the inside of the sled by quite a lot when you are done installing.

Thanks for the reply.

Good tips on the car wax on the seat and spreader tubes.  It also is good on the zippers - helps to keep them smooth.

I also installed a couple of those rod holders - very nice.

I did a take off on your rod holders.
I had some light weight stick in the ground types with the circular ends.
I got some clear tubing from sears and ran it down on the circles.
I only made one bend at an up angle.
Drilled holes on either side just ahead of the metal corner.
Insert rods and they will stick in the ice. No need to permanently mount them.
I'm thinkin' they will also act as somewhat of a non skid item. ;D

Last year I took the crappy stock seat out of my Scout and fitted my Ranger seat.  I had to lower the rails and use a slimline seat swivel so the whole business would fit under my tonneau cover on my truck.  Well, the seat was great, but it became evident that it was just too low.  So this time around I mounted a 3/4" pin deck plate to the original brackets the original seat was mounted to, and mounted the 3/4" pin plate to the seat.  Much better and comfortable to sit in, plus I can easily remove the seat for transportation.

What I will probably do in my Frabill Trekker II 2 man shack, is take one of the seat mounts and modify it to take another deck plate.  Then all I have to do is take the seat from one to the other.

JJ those are called one hole straps. They also make two hole straps which would be even more secure if you dont mind drilling more holes. Anyway take the rod holder with you to the electrical supply house and check out which one fits best. The smaller ones are made for ground wire support. The larger ones are for mc cable or even conduit support.

I tried my scout yesterday for the first time and did not like the feel i got at all. The seat plain sucks. I was going to give up on it . Instead today I removed the whole seat deal and will use my tried and true camp seat. In doing so i removed 13 lbs. and the seat is just great. A lot more open room to carry items and modify as i go along

I used to slide the seat back (I have the Scout) so my feet would sit on the edge of the tub nice and comfortably.  Now I have a piece of closed-cell foam I just put on the ice.  The foam doubles as a hole cover when I catch a fish I really want to keep from going back down the hole, too.  I guess you could put a piece of rope through the foam to keep it attached if you wanted.

Thanks yesterday was my first day fishing in my scout and I dont think I'll need anything to keep my feet off the ice. I was really surprised at how warm it was in there. I didnt have a heater or a latern and it was 17 outside and the sun was shinning. I also made my own rod holders that are easily removable and a lot cheaper then the ones you buy. I'm very impressed with the scout I moved 5 times in 4 hours and its so easy to just get up and move. The tips on here really helped me out.

Papinner, if you don't mind me asking, what did you give for your new scout?  I think I will be driving about 2 hours tomorrow to Michigan to get myself a new Pro.  I can drive about 30min and get a new Scout, but they want $250 for them at Gander, and I can buy the Pro for $299 (also at Gander).  I keep thinking $50 is worth having the extra room.

Great tips all. As for getting your feet off the ice, I picked up some floor mats made of plastic that have holes all through. Set them on the ice and your feet aren't on the ice and water. When I pack up band the mat on the ice and place it in the bottom and set every thing on top.

I meant to add this a long time ago but better late than never. The electrical clips that hold my rod holder (in the original pics) were constantly bending and I was always tapping them in again and it was annoying.
A few years ago I took apart a hindge and used the piece with the two "barrels"  that hold the pin. I primed, painted and installed with SS hardware. I did try to find a hindge with the closest diameter of the rod holder shaft. I hope this helps.

Just make sure to check the end of the barrels. I found quite a few that looked like they would fit the rod holder shaft perfect only to find the barrels weren't round .. they were kinked almost in a triangle form.

I transport my Yukon on a hitch hauler on the back of my Durango.  If you put I-bolts on each end of the sled it makes a great tie down anchor point.  Also allows you to bungee your gear on the sled, or tow multiple units at one time (with a wheeler or snowmobile).  The ones I have it cut down so they do not stick so far into the sled.

I do the same, both my shanties I have replaced the two "rope holes" with heavy duty stainless eyebolts with large stainless fender washers to spread the weight.  On the back I install the same eyebolt, but only a single one and right in the middle to act as a hitch in case I want to pull my Otter sled if I need more gear for gatherings etc.

I can't take credit for this tip polar bear passed this one on to me but I didn't see it on this thread yet so I thought I would share it.  The idea is having a rod box or just a storage container that is light, durable, cheap, and also drains water away from your gear.  The answer was flower planting containers.  I got mine at wal-mart for $9 dollars.  Polar bear uses multiple sizes that cover the whole sled area.  I just use the long container as a rod holder and scoop transport.  The nice thing about these is the water that comes off the scoop is drained into a pan away from your gear.  I attached the container with 3 screws to make it stay put.

OK, I finally did the "hinge thing" for the rod holders today.  Too crappy to fish anyway.   I was afraid I got the wrong size because the hinge was a bit too small for the rod holder leg to fit in it.  Then I had a revelation to drill it out to the exact size I needed.  There was plenty of metal so thinning it was not an issue.  I'm not gonna bother to paint mine.

If you also notice in that picture, I have a nifty rod holder that snaps onto a bucket that I have on the seat rail bracket.  This holder is VERY handy!!

Also, a thing I came up with a few years ago, is how I carry my heater.  The heater I use in this shack is the Coleman EventCat.  It came with a plastic holder, because apparently they are also used in golfcarts.  I mounted that holder on the back of the sled between the seat rail bracket and the tents pole brackets.  This heater NEVER blows out, so once I light it I just keep it running the rest of the day.   This caused a concern when hole hopping, where to put it?  It slips right in this holder and I don't have to worry about burning anything.  When I get ready to fish, out of the holder it comes, and onto the ice where I usually have it.

And this is the stainless eyebolt I was talking about.  This is the one on the back I can use for a hitch, and there are two more on the front where the original line tie hole were in the sled.  I tie those climbing clip things onto the rope, so I can just clip the rope onto the eyebolts.  I use the same rope between the two shanties I have, just clip it onto the one I'm using that day.

WNYBASS...sweet!

I went to the hardware today to do that.
Of course I get very little time to myself and had the 6yo and 3yo and the hardware was a pitstop before sledding...so of course both kids have to tinkle in full sledding regalia in ACO ::) Than the little one smashes a glass globe replacement light. :-\

The pin on the hand grenade that are my children has been pulled and I see my time is dwindling and I can't find the right size....and than I found these for .99 ;D
I guess it's used to lock a loop into metal cable.

The rod holder was from Gander for 1.99. They were straight but I used the vise to give em an angle ;)

So when we got home...in the time it took my kids to take off their snow gear I had this...

Total cost-2.98

I meant to add this a long time ago but better late than never. The electrical clips that hold my rod holder (in the original pics) were constantly bending and I was always tapping them in again and it was annoying.
A few years ago I took apart a hindge and used the piece with the two "barrels"  that hold the pin. I primed, painted and installed with SS hardware. I did try to find a hindge with the closest diameter of the rod holder shaft. I hope this helps.

Here's a pic :

The office binder clips also work very well if you want to hang a rattle reel from the spreader poles.

I'll have to try the clips to hold the canvas on, it sounds like a great idea.

LoneWolf,
Thanks for the Outdoor Creations rod holder pics!!!!
Couldn't be any worse then when your "average" mechanic washes his clothing..or his hands for that matter...

Here are some mods I did to my trap the end of last year and just recently.  I purchased a light house cover for it from clam for $50 bucks.  I removed the seat to cut down on the weight (scout only weighs 39#'s now) and moved the rod canopy over to the side.  I also put removable skiis on my 2 man trap last year to make it easier to pull in the snow (and it worked so well that you can't even imagine!!!!) so I  put the same brackets on my scout and now the skiis can be used on either one.  Fin(http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr67/mrszyski/2009-10-18022.jpg)(http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr67/mrszyski/2009-10-18035.jpg)(http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr67/mrszyski/2009-10-18037.jpg)(http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr67/mrszyski/2009-10-18038.jpg)(http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr67/mrszyski/IMG00085.jpg)

I like the mods Fin. I have been shopping for something compact that I can put in my trunk. Right now I have a Clam 2000, but a small trap like yours might just work. All else fails, I have a Jeep Cherokee I can use, but I like to use my car since it's good on gas. I like the lighthouse cover!

For those with the hinge/rod holder setup, I found a hinge that fits but it seems the rod holder will spin too much.

Have you run into this?

Maybe you can put a notch for the rod holder to lay in, use a dremel or a file. Then it won't swing unless you lift it up.

Here's my take on runners for my Fish Trap Pro, just plain old black UHMW snowmobile sliders, no idea what sled they're from, but the parts guy agreed they were probably the standard sliders from a late '80s machine, attached with stainless hardware:

Rod Holder, just going to try one for now, If I like it, the second one is going on the other side. Just some 1/8" cable saddles, with the saddle removed and some nylock nuts on the inside:

I'll try and take some better pictures of the runners outside in the daylight, show the profile I used.

for rod holders I use a piece of pvc about 6 inches long that has a diagnol slot cut in it.  The slot will then slide over the corner bracket on right and left sides of the clam.  I painted them black so they wont get lost on snow.  I seen the idea on one of these threads and they work absolutly great.  Couldn't possibly be easier to make.

I bought one of the original fish traps in 1993 and liked the room and the bench seat, but as you mentioned it was terrible to drag with a little snow. I was dragging it off the ice one day 4 years ago during a very heavy snow fall and finally said enough. I bought one of the fish Trap Scouts, not as much room but it dragged A LOT easier. I missed the bench seat and slightly larger sled though. I bought a Fish Trap Guide last year so my daughters could go with me. With both seats in it there is very little room for any fishing gear. I took one of the seats out and moved the other seat more towards the middle and it works great when I'm fishing alone. Plenty of room for buckets, heater, vexlar and camera and it's big enough that I can fish two holes inside, can't do that with the Scout. i used wing nuts on the seats so i can quickly add the second seat when the kids want to go.

You'll love it.  It's a little tricky to get tipups in the right places, but it only took me about five trips to figure out when I'd be able to see them once I flipped the cover over.

I have an old 2-man Guide and I put a section of plastic rain gutter along the front of the tub.  I put a bolt, washer and nut about every 12".  You can put end caps on each end too, which will stiffen up the gutter.  I keep all sorts of crap in that thing - hemos, tackle, lure retriever, bait, propane bottles, etc.

I also switched out the oem rope for a longer, thicker braided poly rope that makes pulling it a lot easier.

Home Despot sells a thin-walled black plastic pipe in two foot peices near the sprinkler section of the store. Works great for the 3/4 in conduit, Just use two u-bolts each to attach to the side of your sled.  They are also the right diameter to make rod holders.

Here is a sled I made using conduit. It's lightweight, works awesome and it has been indestructable by Boy Scouts during several winter campouts! They use it hauling gear, fire wood and for the sled races.

This one I made works well. It becomes a bear to break free of slush after sitting a little bit. Could have been just the right conditions, temp/slush?

I bought a 2 man Bass Pro Thermal shanty a couple years ago (Clam made them).  Came with the bench seat.  This year I decided it was time to lighten it up a bit.  I removed the bench seat and replaced the angle iron with aluminum angle.  Then reatached the seat cushion, leaving the back rest off (i never used the back rest anyways).  I would guestimate I shaved off a good 15lbs.  Aluminum was around $20, so I figure it was worth it.

Problem: Gear & Equipment sliding around and falling out of Fish Trap

Solution: Installation of D-Rings on each side.  (Originally I thought of using eye-bolts, but nixed the idea b/c they stuck out too far).  Bungy cord the two holding buckets and or gear against the wall of the Fish Trap.

I got the hard, plastic D-rings from a local camping/backpacking outfitter, but they're available from the following stores:

JoAnn Fabrics (Or any Craft Store)
Home Depot
Lowes
Ace Hardware

The attachment piece (either metal or plastic is also available at most hardware stores.

I drilled an 1/8" hole and riveted them to the sled.

I have a Clam Yukon and installed rod holders on each side using the clever hinge trick, pretty simple and really slick.  Thanks!

Now I am thinking of putting a third line close to the Trap, right between me an my buddy.  I am thinking of either another rod holder and using a really short rod, or using a rattle rig.  Any further suggestions on a method?  If I use the rod holder, it will just be another hinge trick.

Sure, I used speaker wire. Got the LED lights set so I can run any or all of them. I added 1 "extra" switch in case I add more.I was thinking of mounting a big LED light under my seat so on the way back I could turn that on and light my way, at least in front of me. Boat deep cycle battery. yea its heavy BUT I will not get left in the dark on a lake by myself in the middle of the night.Dragging it on the skis make it pull real easy. Ran elec. auger, lights, camera, radio off it last year and never left me in the dark, even after 6-7 hours of fishing. I used black electrical tape to hold the lights on each tube, went around and around till they weren't going to fall off, remember to aim the lights first tho. Maybe blue LED lights on the outside, light up the sides and top? ;) hope this helps

Finally have the skis on. This idea was so i could lower the sled without having to remove the skis. Just pull the detent pin and lower each side. Seems to work well. I might have to trade the 1/2 conduit for something heavier.

wetline005...great idea on the skis...I put skis on my fish trap last year only stationary, pain lifting off and on...what did you use for channel brackets on sled?  when you lower it, does the channel bracket have to be 1 in. deep or greater, to allow for 1/2 conduit leg, to let ski lay out flat, after pulling pins ?  excellant idea...lets us know how it works for you...thanks

Thats an awesome idea wetline. I've been trying to figure out how to hinge skiis on my two man and you got it figured out. Only mod I will do to this for the two man is putting a side panel on the one ski so when I sit in the tow man my feet will be off the ice. I would also like to know what you used for channel if you don't want to post you can send me a pm.

Once again great idea.

Hey jepik, I used two pieces of steel that was bent into a 90 degree angle. I then spot welded them together to make the channel. I think they are about an inch deep. I drilled the hole in the conduit about a 1/4 inch from the bottom to allow it to swing out flat. If i was to do it again i would make the channel a little bit narrower or use bigger pipe. It's a little shaky with the extra clearance in the channel.

very nice wetline! I used the pipe in to pipe method to get mine up. works good, pain yes, pulls so easy its worth the effort. I used 1/2" steel pipe, maybe that would stiffen it up some.

but there is 1 left. The rod storage. I have 2 soft rod cases. I use 1 for my pan fish rods and the other for my walleye rods. When i'm fishing  i like to have the 3 rods sitting there ready to go, so i can switch quickly. Any ideas for holders to keep the rods secure and ready to go. Something that attaches inside my scout. Thanks

How about cold snap rod holders?

wetline005...I went to menards, pick up 4.. 1/2x 12in. galv. nipples,4 base plates threaded,to attach skis to the nipples,in the shelving area I found heavy duty 24in.x3/4in. C channel that is a perfect fit for the nipples...I just finished putting it together...I think its going to be a keeper...less than $20. invested...I thinking about getting 4, 6in. nipples and 4 couplings if the snow would get too deep....thanks again for sharing your good ideas..  :)

No problem jepik. I seen the threaded base plates, but thought i might want the skis to to rotate flat when they are in the out position so they will ride on top of the snow when traveling. But might not have too. Take some pics when your done. I post my pics hoping people will take my ideas and improve on them. I'm just finishing up on my custom rod holders. I can't stop with the mods, its way to fun.

Delron or Delrin... Originally Developed by Dupont:  Here's the scoop:

Advantages of acetal based plastics: Delrin

Chemically resistant
Very low water absorption
Resistant to hydrolysis by base
Disadvantages of acetal based plastics:

Low impact strength
Low melting temperature
More rigid than nylons
Very high thermal expansion
Sensitive to acid hydrolysis and chlorine attack

Wetline I took your idea and changed it a bit. I made a box and took out the sliding seat base that came with my scout. Under the box is my boat battery and small storage area.Added another strip of LED lights to light up my newly found space.I kept the seat mount so I can yank it off any time to loose weight or to get in the back. Wow I cant believe the space you end up with. Now I need more stuff  ;D My son has a Recon and he wanted to do the same so his, its in the final stages.

Just got my first Fish Trap and spent the night putting it together.  It's a Kodiak and tomorrow I will be adding eye bolts and new rope.  Also quite sure I'll put a bigger boat seat in it.  It looks like a lot of the sleds on this thread have metal where folks are installing the rod holders.  Nothing but the plastic sled on the Kodiak.  Would you still drill into it or should I come up with something different?

I am not familiar with the Kodiak, but if it is all plastic, I would add some sort of backer to where ever you drill and screw into.  Either a small block of wood, plastic or a metal brace of some sort.  You could also use plastic tubing as a rod holder and zip tie it to the plastic.  Should be strong enough to hold it.

For the hand auger a couple of bungies work fine, on the sled or pulling Fish Trap Pro.

Finally have the skis on. This idea was so i could lower the sled without having to remove the skis. Just pull the detent pin and lower each side. Seems to work well. I might have to trade the 1/2 conduit for something heavier.

Made a few mods to my Fish Trap Guide

Added tackle box storage under the seat slide
Attached two 4" PVC pipes to hold spare 1 pound LP tanks
Attached the bottom portion of a 5 gallon pail along with a strap to hold the vex in place

ATTENTION Kenai owners......help wanted

Just purchased the Kenai so I don't have to pull the big Yukon whenever i go alone.  My question involves the rubber strip that secures the tent to the sled.  On the Yukon it was a V strip that snapped into the edge of the sled before screwing into place.  The Kenai is just a 2 sided rubber strip.  1 side is flat and the other side has 2 ribs on it.  Which side faces out and which side faces against the fabric/sled?  Don't want to put the screws in until I know it is correct and there is nothing in the instructions stating which to do.  Any help is appreciated!!

I have a Yukon and a ProTC and I believe the side with the ribs faces the fabric....that should help grip it and hold it in place.  Somewhere on this thread (or another on IceShanty) there is a suggestion NOT to use the screws and rubber strips, but to use heavy duty office binder clips to hold it in place.  This would allow you to remove the cover easily for storage away from mice.

If you zoom in on the picture in the PDF of the owners manual available on Clam's web site, it look like the ribs face out.  My guess is the screw heads fit in between the ribs so they don't catch on anything.

I'm picking up my Kenai this weekend.  Not sure if I'm gonna use the screws or the binder clip method that Otto mentioned.  Decisions, decisions...

I made them from stainless steel. A coupling cut in half, welded to a flat bar. 1\2" pipe screws into that. You could use a pipe flange fromlocal hardware store. I went with 1\2" pipe and it works good, handles the weight OK.( I take a lot of stuff including boat battery) It can be a bear getting the skies on (jacked up) at the lake when loaded by my self. 2 people its no problem. Sure pulls nice once up tho. Not much snow you need to be carefull, Sled will run you over on a small slope!

What i did was go to the Salvation Army or Goodwill store and buy the cheapest aluminum walker I could find.  I tore it apart to get the button springs in the legs that allow you to adjust the length of the legs.  I then found some thin wall aluminum that was about 10 feet long and cut pieces to the right length, then drilled holes so the buttons would work.  For the ends I bought some pvc pipe t's in one inch size and hack sawed enough out of the top of the T piece so it would slip over the trap's poles.  I used bolts to attach the pvc the the aluminum.

If the walker's aluminum legs are long enough you could skip the thin walled aluminum and use them instead.  If they are not long enough and you have a buddy who can weld aluminum you could weld a couple of the walker legs together for a longer piece.

I don't know if they carry the spring buttons at Ace Hardware or Lowes but you could check there if you didn't want to bother with a walker.  I only paid a couple of dollars for the whole walker so I doubt if the spring buttons alone could be any cheaper.

Still searching but I remember a tip about running LED wiring through the support poles. This is something I've been wanting to do so the wiring is out of the way and I can mount the battery to a small shelf in my Guide. Already removed one seat and moved the other over a bit. Since nobody ever wants to fish with me, I couldn't see having two seats. Liked the idea of relocating the back seat support bracket to the middle of the tub to allow longer items to lay flat behind the seat.

all I did is run them up and drill a hole on the INSIDE of your hoop. I used black electric tape to hold the wires in each hoop to the pipe. There is no where for the wires to bind, rub etc. This is my 3 ed. year on the LED lights with no problem at all. Just wish we had some ice to run them again!

look to the left and you can see it. I took a peice of 1" flat stock and bent a loop in it. painted it and wraped black electric tape where the auger sits so auger doesnt get scrached up. ( I buy black electric tape by the 10 pack!  love that stuff!) drill 2 holes in it and mount it with 3\16 bolts 1 side make the loop larger to fit auger vaines. Thats the only photo I have for now. Still got the hut in storage- no reason to get it out YET...

willie, Shappell and clam sell replacement pole clips that you can slip into the ends of a piece of 1/2 conduit and make support poles.

I'm interested in getting these myself.  I hate the bowl!  Do you have the phone number for this place?  What exactly do I tell them I want? (Part #)

Otter Outdoors sells some hyfax runners for sleds too.

2x4 ramp kit like this.

They make them for 2x6 or 2x8 as well. Probably have them at Home Depot or places like that as well.

Has anyone tried to put a camp lounge chair in a trap style shelter??? If I'm not mistaken, they might make a folding style that would be perfect if you figure out how to mount it

It works, dont bother mounting it.  Have front legs out of the tub.  The lounge chairs without arms work best.

Flounder that sucks. My poles dont retract at all, they just flip over. That is part of your problem. Black tape'em should work for you. Once you get them in and working you'll wonder how you did it with out them. I added a small LED fog lights to my tub the other day, makes it a lot nicer to see when coming off late at night. (I dont do the lantern thing anymore) Good luck to ya!

Here is my new Scout TC. Setting up high on the skis, makes for a comfy set in warm weather, when you don't need to enclose yourself in the trap. It easily removes from the smitty sled setup. This is called a Side Baiter. It slides between the poles in your flip-up, and holds your drink, pole, bait pucks etc. The rubber securing straps they provide are junk, BUT, you don't need them any way. Duct tape placed on the poles, makes them rock solid and MUCH easier then using those junk rubber straps. I have one on my left side and one on my right. These are PERFECT for my Clam Scout TC. Thought I would share.

Duct tape wrapped around the pole, so the U shape of the Side Baiter receiver fits in snug. Then a thicker wrap below the 1st duct tape wrap, so the Side Baiter can't slide down the pole.

One of the bucket style rod holders will work nicely in the tray too.

Click on his thread -you'll see how he made it himself out of CARDBOARD and FIBERGLASS!  Very clever and an excellent job Eric!  I might copy the design and make it out of 1/8" Luann - I can work with wood tools, but have never tried fiberglass.

Yup that was my first time with fiberglass. Other than the mess and stink, it's pretty simple to work with. There's no right or wrong way to go about it, you just keep adding layers of resin and cloth until you are satisfied with the strength.

I'm pretty sure it just wedges between the poles and sits there. There was another post where the guy used duct tape wrapped around the poles to keep it level, though.

Yes the back end has to be held up by something! Take a chunk out and measure where you want it. ( I used a 3\4" x 6" pine.) The end toward you is drilled on a 45 or so, that way it goes with my hoop angle. Other end is straight drill. I went in a inch or so,drilled both ends then cut out the notch with a jig saw. I marked where level was on the other end, wrapped some black elec. tape on the hoop then a few rounds of wire to build it up, then more tape to seal it and it will hold quite a lot of weight. You could use a zip tie also, put the cut end in so there wont be any problems with the cover, and tape it up. the 45 end stays because its wedged in,cant drop down. A little stain and exterior poly and its good to go. I used it yesterday for the 1st. time and it worked great until the wind came up. It made the hut shake in turn slowly everything started to fall off the shelf. If you build one,  rout a pocket in it or add a small strip of wood all around it so stuff wont fall off. I plan on a strip of pine 1|2 X 1|2 to make a lip, adding it this week. Other than that its simple and VERY usefull for all kinds of things. Bait, small radio, phone etc... Have fun with it! Got a lot of room? make 2 on top of each other!  ;D

The only problem with speaker boxes is that most of them are made with plywood which makes them pretty heavy. If you wanna use wood I would go with something lighter like pine.

Today I took lights that they use in the thermal pro and mounted them in my scout. I also took 2 battery brackets and mounted them in the sled.  Only mounted 2 out of the three as I have some rope LED lights that I am going to zip tie in there.

I took an otter rod holder and mounted it on the side with the most room.

Touching of the positive and negitive wires makes a hot mess.  ::)

Going to put some rope led lights in there that are powered by AA batteries.

I also finally got around to mounting 2 otter rod holders in my otter thermal lodge.

I read through all of this thread and deiced my plain kenia needed some help.  I made ski runners for the snow, hope they hold up well.  I also came across a intresting idea.  I had this winshield sun reflector deal sitting around and I thought hey that looks like the reflectix stuff I saw.  It had creases so it would fold up nicely.  I installed it on one side and will fold it up while not in use.  You guys think that this will work kind of like the real deal?

A sturdy rope threaded thru two sections of heavy ABS plastic pipe on each side and a loop to hook up to your ATV or sled is cheap, easy, and lightweight.   You could also bend electrical conduit into a V shape and hook up that way too.

Look through all the pages on this thread, I'm sure you'll find something you can do.

Wanting to downsize from my 2 man Yukon, I recently purchased a used Scout.  The tub is in very good condition with no damage and has plastic runners already installed along with a couple of 3 led lights.  A few mods were made including fixing the lights from free hanging to somewhat permanent connections to the pole.  Since theres not much room for gear, I afixed the Vex via a wooden bracket to the right corner of the tube, using velcro and the bracket to hold the battery in place.  I gouged out the wood to hold a piece of pvc which I glued in place for the transducer.  I also made one of those shelves that sit between the poles and will add another soon.  I placed the heater along side the seat rails and will hold it in place while moving with velcro (luv that stuff ;D)  I attaced my Yukon hitch to the front, added some downhill skies and now, like everyone here, wait impatiently for winter.  Heres some pics.

The vex in the corner

The led lights.

Something I didn't mention in the post but you can see the battery for the lights sitting in a container fixed to the sled with what else.....velcro.

I'll be pulling with this.  An oldie but a goodie.  Working on a McGiver auger rack and will post a pic when done.

Hey Caseman-Kool mods to your sled! Do you have some more pic's or info concerning the camera mount set up? I really like the rod holder idea to support your camera. How exactly is the camera attached to the holder, and how is the whole set-up  attached to your shack. And the auger carrier? The powerhead end I figured out, neat use of a curtain rod bracket.  I am not quite as clear understanding what kind of bracket you have holding the bottom section of the auger.  And finally, what the heck kind of auger is that? Looks very Zoot! Thanks for your input-TrikerJohn

Can anybody post dimensions (actually, just length) for the wooden shelf that goes between the support poles on a Clam Scout TC?  I wanted to build one but my flip-over is up at my cottage waiting for ice, so I cannot make the measurements myself.  Ideally, the shelf would sit somewhere between elbow and shoulder level when seated in the Clam.
Thanks.

Im using milk crates to modify mine, and they are a good 3-4inches taller than the tub edges.

That's pretty slick, but I'm really being careful about the weight of the shanty. Nice idea.

Me to, i wasnt sure if fiberglass would be lighter than the milk crates.
The total weight of the 4 crates with the lids is exactly 12lbs.

That brings my total sled weight (empty) to 43lbs with the crates in it.

Well that's not much added weight, and looks like it would make for good storage.

I am sure I saw it here on Iceshanty, and probably here on this thread....but I found some broom clips and attached them to the back wall of my Yukon Fish Trap.  One less thing to roll around or get buried in there.  Next little project may be a holder for my Little Buddy heater and and extra propane bottle.

May have been here before, but I didn't see it. Thank you for posting! Never occurred to me that something so simple could save a ton of grief tracking down those pesky, rattling poles. If you haven't seen Dave Genz's tips on you tube modifying his sled, you might want to give it a peek. See what you think of his solution to his Mr. Buddy. Pretty slick.

Ya, that's the one. I am a little reluctant myself to put those 'L' brackets he uses to hold his heater. I can just see myself dropping the canvas and tearing a hole through the side. I am lucky like that. Might try to cobble together a pair of  "slots" from aluminum to attach to the shelter base and fasten the "hooks" on the heater. Know what I want to say, just  not sure how to get it into print. I get a working model, I will send some pic's to you since i can't seem to get photobucket to work.    TrikerJohn

Wetline, just curious if u got a weight before and after you built the fiberglass deck?
Or are u able to remove the deck and weigh it?

This spring I may do something similar.

Just bought the Clam Big Mouth, and i am pumped and ready to modify. Thanks to the idea from someone on here i will be attempting to build a fiberglass deck with footprints and storage compartments. Will post progress pics.
Will be using a very stiff form of cardboard for the pattern.

No i did not weigh it, but if i was to guess it would be around 10-12lbs. I have no way of weighing it. When i finished it i tried to lift it as if i was putting it into my jeep. I can feel it but was able to. I am working on a way for one person to be able to lift it without injuring your back. Using a series of straps.

Thanks! I've always wanted to do this, but using wood would of been way to heavy, and when I seen your fiberglass tip I found my answer. My first experience with the glass was not good. If I did it again I'd use the cloth and do it in a warmer environment. As for it being strong enough, I didn't ever plan on putting a lot of weight on the deck itself. I would stick with one layer but cover all areas a little better next time. Thanks for your tip.

To more efficiently fill my trap.

1:  I use a plastic tool box 22in x 10in to keep my fish separate and not slimming everything else.  Much easier to filet fish when they are frozen flat.  Don't keep much over 22 inches unless I cut the tail off.  As a bonus it looks like I might be going to work.

2:  Plastic office filing boxes are good also I have a pair in my hooch.

3.  Last of the most important modifications was to add 4 wheels.  They flip up when not on pavement.  Used snowmobile thin 5 inch wheels.  I drag the Voyager and on pavement the wheels rule.

@wetline and eric

My wheels are turnin to do something very similar to my rover 1. Is there a certain kind of fiberglass cloth and resin I should look for? Heck I dont know, sorry if thats a dumb question, never done anything with fiberglass. Any tips to save me the hassle and added trips to menards 30 miles away would be appreciated. Doesnt look like rocket science, but I know how these things go. Im thinking of doing something similar to wetlines sled.
Title: Re: ....... Fish Trap Tips ........
Post by: BaitBucket on Jan 18, 2013, 07:01 AM
The fiberglass resin it where alot of the support comes from. Think of it like epoxy with cloth for extra support.
I know alot of guys in the audio business make speaker boxes using fleece material, and its alot cheaper, and stretches to almost any shape.
The fleece is thicker and more absorbent, thus soaking up more resin and making it stronger.

Check this video out here: Fast forward to like the 2min 40sec mark
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8cz_5eP81U (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8cz_5eP81U)

Basically make a mold using cardboard like wetline did, cover with fleece and coat it with resin (u can use spray adhesive to help hold it to the cardboard, not needed tho). U can use the fiberglass cloth for added support in corners, but for what we are doing you prolly dont need it.

This way will be a little heavier, but much stronger.

Post by: wetline005 on Jan 18, 2013, 08:40 AM
My advice would be do it in a warm climate. The resin sets up a lot faster. I also started out with the fiberglass mat, and it was a mess. After learning about the cloth I purchased some and it worked out a lot better. The resin was not cheap and the directions said to put a layer of resin, then cloth, then resin to cover cloth.  That took way more resin than I expected to use. If there's a way to avoid using that much I'd try it. Other than that just take your time and do small areas at a time covering entire deck both sides.

@baitbucket: Very helpful info. I will be considering this.
@wetline: Thanks for the advice. So I will be looking for fiberglass "cloth" not the mat if I go this route.

Like I said I know how these things go so always willing to take advice and learn.

Since my shanty isnt a fish trap I'll have to start a new topic. I started this project last night so Ill post pics soon.

I posted this in your other thread but ill put it here too.

Home Depot, lowes, any hardware store, automotive store, even walmart carry the stuff you need.

One of these:

2 of these: (cloth not mat!!)

And your carpet.

Important to remember to, The fumes area neurotoxin. Not good for the brain at all. Be sure you got a well ventilated area.

What are your guys thoughts on using a high quality felt for the wrap instead of the fiberglass cloth or polyester fleece? I have felt leftover from a high end pool table that the felt was just replaced on. The felt should be pretty absorbant and its free. I could spray adhesive on the box mold to attach the felt then resin coat that. If I go this route, I may just end up painting it instead of carpeting.

After some research Im not so sure I wana go the felt or fleece route. Seems like they recommend you still fiberglass cloth over the fleece for added strength. Not saying it wouldnt work, but Im not sure I want to risk the thing cracking when Im dragging it over drifts and bouncing around etc... The fiberglass cloth should eliminate that risk. After having so much time in something, I wana make sure it wont ever break.

I installed the runner kit on my Clam Scout TC.  It leaves 2 rows ofbolts sticking up about 1" all across the length of my tub.  I initially covered these with some foam strips, and then an exercise pad floor, but was wondering if it would be better overall to just cut these bolts off and grind them flush with the top of the nuts.  Suggestions?  Whatever I do, i need to be able to dry out the bottom of the tub, so I am reluctant to get into the customized fiberglass setups and that sort of thing.  Just some simple flooring ideas to cover the nuts/bolts and allow drying of water left behind from snow and ice.  Ideas?
Title: Re: ....... Fish Trap Tips ........
Post by: $ignmoney on Jan 21, 2013, 05:07 AM
No don't grind them. Grinding makes a lot of heat and it will make the bolt hot thus melting your tub and or runners. Hot bolt could melt right threw the tub. I used shorter bolts so all I have is a cap nut hardly sticking up. Change out your bolts for shorter ones would be the best I would think

I used a Dremel to cut the bolts flush and a grinder to smooth out ant sharp edges and burrs. No melting occurred.

I set out to come up with a solution for an auger mount for my Flip Over.
I wanted something removable so it wouldnt be in my way after i get out on the ice.

Here is my project step by step:

Materails:
5ft length of 2in PVC,
2X 2in Threaded Cap
2X 2in Threaded Flange
PVC Cement
4x Nuts and bolts

First task was to mount the threaded caps to the tub using 2 bolts in each cap:

Next - Cut PVC to size (mine were 13in) and cut notches to hold the auger.

Next - Attach the threaded flange, and cement in.

Add a screw on each side just to ensure it all stays together.

Screw flange into the caps on tub.

Put on auger =)

One out on the ice, just unscrew and place into tub..

As an added bonus, the caps are the perfect size for my spike and meal worm tubs.

While I was at it I cut down a pair of skis i had and installed them as runners.

Hey BaitBucket-Nifty idea's all around. I also considered using PVC to make an auger holder for my Eskimo. Do you have any problems with the shelter "flipping up" on it's tail due to all the extra weight at the back of your sled? Not sure I asked that the way I mean-hope you understand what I am asking.

With my sled completely empty as you see in the pic it didnt tip back at all. And my auger is a pig (think it weighs more than me).
Once all my gear is in it, im not worried at all about it tipping back.

Baitbucket thanks for sharing. I have one of the original Genz fish traps and the power auger was always a problem. Especially after a sharp edge on the auger gave me my first tear, from that point on it trailed behind me in a kid's plastic sled by itself. One less item to drag.

I bought a Clam Scout TC a couple weeks ago.  Modded it today and here is the result.  I used mainly what I had laying around.  Got all my ideas from this thread.   ;D  Tip-ups on the right, jig poles on the left, under the seat tackle/acc. storage, behind the seat more storage.  Heater and bait bucket ride on the deck.  Auger holder, cup holder and removable jig rod holder.  Doesn't add a ton of weight, can still lift it easily and slid it in the back of my car.

Hey Baitbucket-How did you determine the length of your AWESOME auger holder. I figure I can always curt it shorter easier than I can add to it. You should think about patenting your idea  and selling them on eBay. I saw some mods on this site for a "cooking unit/tray" that attaches to a  Mr. Heater.  Guess where I saw basically the same thing being sold???? You won't see me stealing your idea and trying to make money off of it, but someone else with no, scruples might try.  You deserve the credit as well as any compensation involved.
Sorry, I see something I think is wrong and I have to vent. Your idea will be saving me and a lot of other fisherman a lot of headaches. Just hope you benefit from sharing your idea, financially or otherwise.

Today I added a 12v system to power lights (eventually) and my strike sensors.  After my first trip out with them, they didn't trigger the pager at 50yds. Hoping the 12v running the pager will give me at least 50 yds reliably.  Going to add those flexible LED's in a couple weeks.  ;D

I use a 3' long bungee cord and hung it off the center pole of the Yukon. Opened the bottom hook and it's the perfect rod holder. D

I guess my other posts got deleted for their pics? Not sure

To find your height you will need to do some trial and error.
Start with a length you know is to long, cut your notches and put the threaded coupler on. Then screw it into the threaded caps attached to the sled.
Now place your auger on and see what you have for clearance. The poles and or their mounting bracket will be your limiting factor.
Just keep cutting them down till they barely clear the poles or bracket.

Also, on the holder for the blade end of the auger, i drilled a hole on each side of the notches to hook a bungee to. To wrap around the end of the auger and hold it down.
If you get into bumpy terrain that can pop out with nothing holding it in.
Gravity has worked fine for the side holding the head of the auger.

Once again, THANK YOU SIR! I couldn't find threaded caps, but I found some threaded adapters (I guess that is what they are called?!)).  I just cut a short piece of PVC and glued it in between the end cap and threaded adapter. Anyway, I  glued it up last night and will go out in the garage after lunch and finish putting everything together. I test fit everything last night and it worked PERECT! I now have a 6 pack of Bud's with your name on them setting in my fridge. Stop by and we can swap fishing lies and get snockered. Always makes the little lady real happy ::)

Hey all.. I know this thread has been dormant for sometime but I had to post... Picked up an older Dave Genz Fish Trap off CL today.I paid $50. Came complete with carpeted bench seat and two spreader poles.. One short and a longer two piece. Looking for pictures from the original manuals or info from anyone on how to use these. I think I'm gonna keep it fairly stock. I may go with a padded stadium seat. It's an oldie and uses a spring loaded clip to secure it to a bleacher.. Similar to the carpeted seat in the Fish Trap. I also will be using a modified Snap On drop light that I found. I use a 9v battery and placed the guts in a water bottle. Throws off a ton of light.

NOW WHERES THE ICE!

Any fiberglass resin/hardener should work. Just be sure when you buy it has both the resin and a tube of the hardener:
http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1414937 (http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1414937)

Use the Fiberglass cloth instead of the matt. Its much easier to use.

I have a nanook and I just order another seat braket and instead of bolting the seats to the brakets I used a hich pin. So I have 3 brakets. The 2 for when its a 2 man and then one in the middle for when its just me.

I made runners out of conduit and used pvc u-bolted to the side. I can then slide the runners in when moving and pull them out when I set up. I've only used it once so far but it seems to work. As I mentioned above I found the idea for this on an old thread.

Okay guys..need some help.
I have an older model Dave Genz Fish Trap. Its awesome. Perfect for my needs. After the rain yesterday, I decided to air/dry it out this morning. Heard a terrible sound when unfolding it. Yup, guess there was some frozen water in a fold causing a three-four inch tear in the canvas. No too big of an issue being it is on the front side, where the window is. And I had some patch material and fabric glue which should do the trick
My question is this: while looking for replacement covers I found an Eskimo brand, cheap, on ebay. Has anyone ever tried to use on of these covers on a Fish Trap?
Thanks in advance..

My son just bought a RED ESKIMO WIDE #1.,  Used, most likely 1st Generation.
I'm impressed with it in comparison to our BLUE CLAM NANOOK.

He's already replaced the pull and added eye bolts & carabiners for usage as a safety rope
Already installed an LED Strip Light
Installed Rod Holders.

ANY OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS OR COMMENTS TO IMPROVE OR UPGRADE WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

I've been thinking of changing the seating system around on my Fish Trap Scout for awhile. I was never a big fan of the two tubes taking up all that room in the sled. My first fish trap (1993) had a bench style seat that I really liked. I was deciding if I was going to make the bench seat like my original trap which had conduit frame with a plywood (with carpet).  Looking through past post on this site I saw on page 14 that gldnrcher had a better style. It looked like he had just moved the tubes to the outside. It worked great! I like having the bench seat to set rods, etc. on. I attached a few photos, unfortunately the carpet I had on hand wasn't big enough so I had to use two pieces which doesn't look as well. I moved the mesh bag that had been under the seat to the side, I did have to add an extra brace for that.
Thanks gldnrcher for posting that picture on page 14 and 15.

Here is a shelf that I built to fit in my QuickFlip. I made it 7.5" wide so it will hold the sidewall out and stop it from flapping in the wind. It is very sturdy, I can put my full thermos, gloves and spare rod on it and it does not tilt at all. Works better than I expected for such a simple design.

Here is how I located my poles....I did not like them rattling around in the sled and on days that I didn't use them they became a hazard when I stepped in the sled and onto the poles as they would roll under your boot.

Another advantage with having them in the rack, I can leave them extended therefore not having to line up the little button with the hole in the dark.

The spring clips are made of steel even though they look plastic in the picture...they should last a long time.

I hope this helps some guys that are annoyed as I was with having them loose in the sled.

I have also added a couple of swing away rod holders mounted under my seats. I made them somewhat like the Frabill ones.

I used the ends of ATV clutch spring and welded a metal strap onto them so the mount under my seats using existing bolts, very simple design anyone can make.

Here is a few pictures of them, they are painted red and one on each side of my QuickFlip.

I used the ends of ATV clutch spring and welded a metal strap onto them so the mount under my seats using existing bolts, very simple design anyone can make.

Here is a few pictures of them, they are painted red and one on each side of my QuickFlip.

Nice job on the rod holders ...I have the Frabill ones . That center console ? Is that Eskimo or fabricated ?

Its actually one I bought at Wal*Mart for $15.00 in the automotive section. Its made of poly and has adjustable cup / bait holders and a few other compartments for holding my phone and mini speaker etc. I just screwed it to the existing Eskimo shelf.
I did not like just the Eskimo shelf because there was no sides on it to hold things in place and I could foresee something of value going into the lake, this was my solution, It fit perfectly with no mods needed.

Thanks FB...I have looked at auto consoles before ...never seen anything that would foot the bill for a similar purpose like yours ...guess it is possible ...I do have the Mags bait shelf and some LED lights ...I should get some pics for others to see ..I did do a seat mod on my Frabill Adventurer also ...but went to a HT sports chair for weight issues .

Holy bass boat batman! Nicely done sir, very cool!

Just bought the Clam Big Mouth, and i am pumped and ready to modify. Thanks to the idea from someone on here i will be attempting to build a fiberglass deck with footprints and storage compartments. Will post progress pics.
Will be using a very stiff form of cardboard for the pattern.

since a lot of people own fish traps or flip overs here is a cool item to throw your lures on it was made for salmon spoons. i purchased it from big poppa sport fishing here in Michigan with the Velcro straps.  to hang from the shanty walls over the tubes in the shanty or from fiber glass poles in the hub style shanties... here is a picture and a link to them..

Thanks for posting the mod on the seat and two tubes.  I missed seeing it in the picture gldnrcher posted.  I had taken the seat and tubes out and put them in the attic of the shed and used a folding chair but after seeing your post, I did the mod.  Works great and creates more room.

where did u find the mount? or is it homemade?  Great idea!

the silver part is a tite-lok rail mount i took and hooked to a ram mount by tapping for threads the ball base mount of a ram mount. then screwing it all together i used a 1 inch by 3/8 - 16 thread screw... same with the tap it was 3/8 by 16 thread per inch..  if you need more picks i can get them the mount works awesome you can also use it on the shappell s3000 shanties... any thing with a tubular frame. i got mine at gander m. it is a rail mount rod holder for like pontoon boats. i just used the base i did not have to drill the ram mount base either by the way just use the tap on it for threads.. they are aluminum so be careful not to crack it with to much pressure from the tap like back it out and restart it ever once in a while.   the cost of the ram mount base was 9.99 at cabelas  the flasher mount was 35 at cabelas and the tite-loc was 14.99 at gander..  already had the stuff laying around so cost for me was zero dollars... but not that pricey any how if you got a boat you can move from the shanty to boat with the ram mount very easily. it is just a thumb screw... try tite-lok .com  or google tite-lok rod holder and find the mfgs web site they should have them there and ware to find them or buy them..

Here is my smitty sled all painted up with an auger rack added. Also made a pole holder out of a 3/4" pvc elbow. Shortened it up a little and drilled a hole through it and bolted it into and existing hole in the seat mount. When not in use it just spins out of the way

Just an idea for rod storage. I've played with buckets, soft cases, mounted rod holders, and just about everything else. I like to carry 5-6 rods and always seem to get tangled. This idea works good in the house. Haven't been on the ice yet.

Thanks, and it is 1 1/4 pvc that I painted. I also used plasti dip for the blue part to smooth out any sharp edges and cushion the reels.

Alot of "Tricking" your flip depends on your style of ice fishing... whether you are pulling your sled (where weight is a major determining factor) or using a motorized vehicle.  If you are a very mobile type icer or a stationary one are things to consider also.  You might check out You Tube Videos too.

Convenience Items (Lights, Bait Holder, Cup Holder, Tackle Box, Rod Holder, etc), plus easily accessible & an organized "system" will be your key to success

If your trekking by foot, then weight & bulk will be of the utmost consideration in anything you add, build, buy or attach to your Flip.

Lots of great ideas on here. I am adding some cut up rain gutters to the back to hold my tip ups in, they fit perfectly. I also added some of the 4"pvc to hold extra 1lb propane. I am working on a shelf system that will have cup holder, and rod holder. Making it a little wider to help hold the side of the canvas out away and at least make it feel larger inside. I am hooking up the eye bolts to the front and using pvc pipes to run the pull rope through, I bought a harness system and want the pvc to help separate the lines a little more evenly. Bought some Climbing caribiners on clearance that will attaché to both ends of the ropes. I can easily add or remove it that way. Try to add some photos when I am all set up.

Awesome,  awesome post going here. I'm going to be purchasing a 1 man flip for trips I take alone and don't want to drag my 2 man yukon. Haven't seen any mods to mount a buddy heater/cooker? Basically a sunflower heater with the metal stand. It gets hot and when jumping holes you have to wait a few minutes to put it in your tent to move. Anyone have an idea on how to mount it or hang it so i can move quick and not have to worry about melting anything?

I am not positive this will work but I think that Reflex stuff is made of metal foil. How about lining a bucket with reflex or some other heat resistant material you may know of and then put your warm heater in the bucket for transport purposes?

Good Luck

My heaters burned holes through my reflectix while I was waiting for it to cool off and the wind blew the wall into it. Maybe a metal bucket or a piece of stove pipe?

I have seen, can't find it now, where they mount a piece of wood to the outside of the sled with two hooks on it. You then hang it back there, facing out, while you travel to the next hole.

Finally started getting everything organized in the sled. I will try to post some pictures.

HAWG Outdoor lights are amazing, cheap, and come with everything you need. They are waterproof, come with mounting straps, and are ready to hook up to your battery.

Mounted the tank holder, holds 4 1# tanks.

Shelves are in and fit great. I saw these on here and modified them a bit. Added cup holders and foam for hooks. I used another piece of wood underneath to help support. I also added the center console, and mounted a second battery holder underneath for the lights. Console can hold a battery that will charge my electronics separately.

Shelf for the other side.

Was thinking about adding a few layers of the rigid insulation to the bottom of the sled cut to size. Then i would cut out patterns to hold gas tanks, bucket, etc. My question, do i glue it down or should i just lay it in incase water gets under the insulation. I would think if water gets under it could get gross and smell. Thoughts?

Kuenro02    I have a 1/2" foam mat in my gut. Works great for noise and I think it's a bit warmer also. No matter what I do I seam to get snow or water in the bottom and it always gos to the recesses. My shop is heated and everything drys out fast except the water that's under the foam. I have it so I can set everything out and lift the foam out so everything can dry. Works great for me. Good luck

i have a non insulated clam voyager that i was considering putting reflectix in like some have, but didn't like how it looked in the pics on here. looked like it didn't seem to be supple enough to fold with the cover the way i would like it. so i was pondering how or what else to use while in bed just before i got up to go fishing early when it came to me. i was sleeping under my solution! my blanket was just perfect! later in the day when i got back i went to the local stores to look for a blanket that would work. found several at my local family dollar for a total of @ 60 bucks. put them in between the cover and poles, attatched them together and to the poles, using zip ties for now(i know, crude!) to be sewed together later. man was it warm in there and it folds up just how i wanted it to. did add a little wht. but after i get it all sewed up(or rather my wife, as she's the one with the sewing business!) i'll really put it to the  test next season when we hopefully get some really cold weather to make ice! oh, sorry no pics!

Shelf for the other side.

might be good idea round those shelf corners.  avoid poking hole in cloth
