What size minnoe on tip up?
« on: Jan 30, 2013, 05:58 PM »
I plan on setting tip ups in the shallows for wally, just really don't know just what size minnow would be the best bet. Most likely will have a variety of sizes as I will be jiggin or dead stickin as well.

I have had good luck with medium size sucker minnows. I am thinking they were in the 6-8 " range. The walleyes I caught on these were in the 22"- 25" class. If that length  falls into a slot where you are at, I would use a little smaller minnows.

One thing I want to add is that I caught the biggest walleyes on tip ups with the size minnows I said in my first response. I caught far more, all much smaller, 16"- 19" with a jig and minnow head. It definitely cut down on the number of flags but the size of the fish really went up using bigger bait.

I know the lake I am going to has many age classes, it is stocked well acording to the reports I have seen, should have plenty in the 20" plus class.

I have seen them caught on anything from crappie minnows to 10 inch suckers.

I used 4-6 inch suckers on mine. Buddy caught one on an 8" one though

Where legal, anyone use Perch as Walleye bait ?  I have a place I can catch lots of  4"- 6" perch.  I'm thinking give them a trim and send them down !   What else do you think ?  Dead? live?  through the dorsel ?  upside down ?  We'll be targeting 18"- up to 27"ers, I hope !
