gonna try some trolling, need some help.
« on: Jun 24, 2008, 11:28 AM »
ive never been trolling for samon, togue, trout etc.....

ive got all of the gear for muskies though,

read what i have, and then tell me what i need to modify....
ive got 6 trolling rods, plan to run 2 out each side using inline planers, and 2 straight out the back, everything has about 200yds of 12-18pound line.....
im fairly adept at trolling, like i said, just not familiar with doing it for these species.
can i use snap swivels?
do i need those big inline spinners in front of my lures?
what should i use for lures? right now, im using spoons, and wobblers,
i plan to use lures like large pimples to get some depth.
im not planning on using downriggers..... but should i?
how far back should the lures be from the boat?
can you guys hold my hand, and maybe wipe my butt on this ?

any input is good input, thanks
Barely legal is just how i like em'.......
Fish, that is.... yah, the fish

try spoons, big spoons with tiny spoon trailers or flies, stickbaits, and use leadcore or a diving planer. you can use downriggers also. you want 6 pound leaders with a swivel between the main line and the leader. i use fish seekers to get down to the fish. i run them off my in-line planer boards. there is plenty of info on myfishfinder.com.

This time of year the gamefish have gone deep. Remember trout and salmon prefer temps around 55. Downriggers or leadcore are the norm now. 12 to 18# is a bit heavy, but might be OK for togue. A diving disk just may be ok for you tho. Tie your heavy line to it and a lighter line like 6 or 8# fleuro to your lure. If you can get a rigger follow the 100' rule. For ex. 20' down 80' back from the ball, or 40' down 60' back from the ball. In other words the closer the ball to the boat the further back you want your lure. With a rigger you can use light tackle like a spinning rod equipped with a lighter line. Spoons like the mooselook wobbler, weeping willow, Sutton 44, speedy shiner, and my favorite DB smelt work well.
