Blackflies
« on: Apr 17, 2008, 08:14 AM »
It didn't take long for the state of Maine bird to appear. They're not bad yet, it's just the start with the leaning process for them. They just fly around and crash into you once in a while. I guess they are waiting for their teeth to form. This is why I like the cold months.

Frogs are peeping, woodcocks are beeping and the summer birds are here. I saw a bumble bee today, one of those big fat ones. Time to set out the halibut trawl.

The bee are starting to show up more and more. Walblers and other flycatcher are here in full force. I think you could still find some ice in the shady spots and in under some brush, but the ponds are all free and have frog and lizzards eggs. The frogs are peeping so loud that they are drowning out my TV. My ice fishing gear is mostly in the attic until next year. It may be a good thing though because I wasn't getting anything done around the house during the weekend. Now I can start hauling out my firewood for next year and start splitting it.  >:(

had skeeters for 2 weeks now. black flies are only here for 2 weeks, and only in the mountains.
those fat "bumble bees" are probably carpenter bees. bumbles have gold coloring on the rear, carpenter bees have yellow on the front only. ;D

Frank from Brookton (remember Frank, Pegasus?  He flagged you down on your way out) says the state birds aren't too bad a bit further north than you folks.  He says, "Just bite your tongue, and they will leave you alone."

I have been working with the black flies and the skeeters for about two weeks now. It really means that the good brookie fishing is just about here. Once there totally swarming ya then the trout fishing in the ADKs is at its best.
