Need opinions on purchasing a fish finder
« on: Jan 07, 2008, 04:11 PM »
Hello everyone! I'm new to iceshanty, but I've been reading posts for awhile now. I would like opinions on what type of fish finder to buy. I've been doing a little reseach on Vexilar and Marcum. I fish just about everything in 0-100feet of water, so I need some diversity, something easy to use, and durable.

What's your price range and performance expectations?

I would suggest buying either one, whatever model fits your price range. I owned a Vex FL-8 for 8 years and now I have a Marcum LX-5. They both have helped me increase my catches tremendously. The marcum units have more power and are made in USA, which is very important to me.

I bought a Marcum VX-1 last year, I love it. I payed $250, but there are recondition ones out there for $180. The reconditioned ones have the same 1 year warranty, Hope this helps.

i got an x67c a couple years ago and love it. Its sorta a cross between a flasher and fish finder. I hardly ever use the flasher feature. i just picked up a spare for $65 on clearance. i can watch a 1/16 oz jig at a 100 feet

My opinion is don't take anyones opinion.  Do your studying, find your price range and do it.  Go with the main 3 flashers and you can't go wrong.  Why, because the Marcum & Vexilar debate goes on and on.  Any kind is much better than none.  Looks like some good deals out there so go get one only about 6 months to hardwater.

OK I know marcum is or was a sponsor. But they just went belly up and I would be afraid to buy anything that has there name on it right now. I know they were bought out by the company that sells aqua view but nobody knows for sure if they plan on making any of there products or not anymore. Just my opinion. Who knows for sure if the guys that have marcum units right now, will be able to get parts for them. I'm not trying to bash marcum either. It's just I wouldn't spend $400 to $800 on one of there units or cams right now until I see what happens. I've always been a vexy guy but was thinking of trying one of there 5's out . But It's going to have to wait now.
I've was on the ice and fishing Nov. 23rd 2008 and don't plan on stopping tell spring breakup 2009 !!!!

I have a lowrance x67 that i like but also have a showdown vertical line graph that i absolutely love.  Both have great features but when push comes to shove the showdown just works better for me.  It is inexpensive too.  I think I paid 200 for mine brand new.
