2 Rescued After Falling Through Ice On Candlewood Lake[/b]
The Hartford Courant
7:37 PM EST, January 11, 2009
A cross-country skier and a Danbury man were rescued today after falling through the ice on Candlewood Lake in Danbury, fire officials said.

A man who had apparently been cross-country skiing across Candlewood Lake, off Circle Drive, fell through the ice at about 4 p.m., fire officials said. A Danbury man who saw him fall through attempted to rescue him, but both men fell through the ice again near the shore, firefighters said.

The men were rescued by firefighters after about 10 minutes in the water and were transported to Danbury Hospital. Both men were conscious and alert, officials said.

Kudos to the person who risked their life to rescue a complete idiot. I'm sure we'll get a name soon enough.   Good to hear everyone is alive.

Why would anyone attempt to cover ground across that particular lake (or parts of it), after a fresh snow, this early in the season? Careful has nothing to do with it, and neither does ice fishing. Get in the car, and go ski on the flippin' trails! Use your head.

Are there numbers published anywhere that shows what percentage of people who fall through the ice and get rescued are actually out there ice fishing ?

I dont understand how anyone on skiis or a snowmobile or 4 wheeler can drive across any ice without measuring it..  so many times guys pull up in a sled or 4 wheeler asking
"how much ice we got"  glad I wasnt sitting on 2" ice

Correct. He didn't use a rope or ladder.
He called 911 first, and brought something else out onto the ice during his rescue attempt.
It's a good story, and i won't ruin it. This one will make the news and papers.

I'll give the guy credit for taking action, but unfortunatly instead of being part of the solution he became part of the problem. Its always a better idea to try to reach with a rope or stick etc.

I know of a guy that took a walk (10:00 PM) on the ice to enjoy the evening. He knew that fisherman had been on the lake and assumed it was safe. What he didn't know was that the fisherman had stayed away from the area he was on. Well you guessed it, he fell in! After about five minutes, someone went outside for a smoke and heard him screaming. They quickly went in too. The next guy came with a canoe and went in. It took until the third guy to call 911. Lesson #1 learned here, call 911 and never go out to help yourself. Leave it to the professionals. Lesson #2 measure before going out. The fireman fell threw also, but with survival suits on. Everyone was OK in the end.

P.S. never park on or block the boat ramps, leave it open for rescues.
Are you afraid to catch big fish?<br />I can help!

Maybe it isn't going to make the spotlight. So...

What i read was the rescuer/homeowner first called 911 after seeing the skiier in the lake. Right after that the guy grabbed a small aluminum boat (think it was aluminum), and pushed it along the ice out to the the skiier. He managed to retrieve the idiot from the water but they broke through the ice on the way back. Supposedly the rescuer suffered some sort of head injury when that happened. Shortly after that the cavalry arrived.

Dumb or not, the rescuer did something not a lot of us would do. Risk themselves for a stranger. Not sure why he picked the boat. Maybe he was outside already and that was the closest feasable item. Or he knew he was going to traverse questionable ice to get to the skiier and wasn't prepared otherwise. It was a pretty good choice considering.

I wasn't being sarcastic in my last post. I think the guy was quite the hero for doing what he did, even if it meant having to be rescued himself.

Good job! I dont think any of us could just stand on the shore and watch the first guy drown. You have to do somthing! Dont forget....next week YOU could be the first guy in the drink .
