Why are the called "ling"?  Dare I ask why do they call this fish "lawyer."  I can only imagine.

Theres a salt water fish called the Lingcod which resembles it.

Dogfish, maria.... on the prairies they're most commonly called dogfish.  I've heard that the burbot is actually a member of the green ling family.  The ling cod in the Pacific are similar, but have big teeth and spikey dorsal that burbot lack.

they are ugly but shure taste GOOOD!! keeps the kids happy too. my son got a 7.5lber 2 years ago on a alder branch we set up like a trap. the head barely fit through the 8in. hole! didnt help that the flashlight holder was drunk and didnt keep the light still! lol! the boy still talks about that fish.

there is a french name for it but im not sure how its spelled. it goes something like couranggy. burbot in french is catfish.

I'm not sure about the "ling" name... but I know that they're called "lawyer" because they're ugly, slimy bottom feeders, feeding on the death and decay of others...
