Is there a better type of replacement blades than the eskimo quantum blades that will fit my z51 I got this year? I ruined my first set when I drilled into a sandbar on a small river and the replacement set I got dulled after 5 holes in river ice that appeared to be clean.  They seem to be made of very soft metal.

I touch mine up all the time and have one extra set I touched up and one extra brand new set just in case. The new ones I just bought are made in China and I think that is the norm now.

Someone with a spare set of blades made by our generous suppliers across the Pacific, and a torch needs to heat 'em up to cherry red and drop 'em in borax.  Then try touching up the edge and see how hard it is, and, if they cut better, longer.     ;)2

Where did you come up with that quote BSC ?     The science in my statement stands !

I am thankful for their presence on this site and in viewing this post, I hope they will be kind and convey to the dear people of their homeland, the lack of common metallurgy and inconsistency of ethical quality control in several products being produced for our consumption, could be of better quality.     ;)2

Enjoy your snow cone and have a safe season Bourbon.     :icefish:

Hey guys. I have a Eskimo Shark Z43 that was running great up until the end of last season.  It just simply stopped to start and when you to get it to start then shut it off  you can't get it started again.  First I cleaned the carbs and put on new gaskets/carb kit.  Started up better but then when you shut it off it won't start again.  Next, I checked the compression which was great, it is getting spark, it's getting good gas, the muffler is not plugged, and there are no other leaks, etc....I've come to the conclusion that it is the ignition coil.  When I do get it running it runs great and idles awesome.  The unit is really in great condition and it is an awesome cutting machine.  Any ideas on where I could get a replacement ignition coil?  If this isn't the problem I am lost.  If if it is it seems like a fairly inexpensive fix to an otherwise good unit.

Thanks for any and all help.

Yup, that was my guess before you stated that, a weak coil will definitely induce the symptoms you have. Ardisam (Eskimo)will be able to hook ya up with one right quick. Fixed a few with that prob a couple years ago.

Just bought a mako 8in from L&M supply for 285 shipped. My question is... do the augers come with oil or do I need to order some viper oil? I want to run the viper oil for the first gallon then maybe switch to amsoil depending on if I like the viper or not.

Guys, that number is no longer good, here's the new one: 1-715-822-2415.   :)

Kevin, you'll have to buy the Viper oil if you want it, doesn't come with it.....Fleet Farm also carries it.

Which way is the proper way to set the auger down on the ice? It will be stored upright in the garage.

I set mine gas cap up if it's on the ice. Blade guard on, also.

I'm going to get a snap on cover for it so I can put it on every time, but until then there is no way I'm bending over to put it on after every use if there is nobody around me.

That's a great idea! May give that a shot. I think I have some small neodymium magnets around here. They should be strong enough to epoxy on the outside and make contact through the plastic. Problem is, they are going to grab everything else metal that comes close.  ;D

Got my auger today. 23 hours after I placed the order.  ;D

Can't weight to give it a try. First thing I noticed was the weight, I'm not used to it so I guess I'll have to do some dead lifts. 31lbs feels a lot different than my 6lb hand auger.

Second thing I noticed was no vented gas cap! Looks like I have the "new style" tank and gas cap (tank is HUGE!). And the metal rocker switch on the top vs the plastic one on the side like I saw on the stingray.

After looking it over, the only thing I don't like is the flimsy little plastic choke lever. That sucker is going to get broken for sure!

Hey guys sorry if this has been covered before.  The recoil on my Z51 does not seem to want to pull the string all the way back into the housing.  I can still pull start the machine, but it leaves like 6 inches of rope hanging there.  What is the easiest fix for that if possible?  Thanks

Got my auger up and running today. I did JUST shy, not by much, of 1 gallon of gas and 1 jug of the viper oil. So it should be right at 45-50:1, figured a little boost would help during the break-in period!

Filled the tank 3/4 full
Primed it 6 or 7 times until the bulb was full
Flipped the choke on
Hit the on switch
Pulled twice and she popped, pulled one more time and she started right up.

Three pulls for a cold auger freshly filled with gas is pretty good isn't it?

I let it idle for probably 5 minutes, slowly gave it some throttle to about 1/4 and let it go for a minute or two and then shut it down. Restarted with 1 pull with no choke and repeated, going to 1/2 throttle. Repeated again to 3/4 throttle, then repeated again to full throttle. The clutch did slip a bit at first, but by the time I was done I could fire it up with 1 pull and she would take right off.

I set it back down for 1/2 hour and came back. No choke, no priming, in one pull she started right back up.

She's resting comfortably in the corner of the garage, ready to go Saturday morning!

PS: as for the viper oil, at full throttle it smokes just a little bit, but not much at all. No smoke at all at idle to 1/2 throttle. And that is mixed a little rich. Unless there is some problems once I hit the ice, I think I'll be sticking with this oil.

Is it doing this when cold?

If so, the gease used to lubricate it can get stiff.  I had the same problem.

Remove the recoil assembly.  Spray some brake cleaner in behind the pulley.  Pull the rope a few times and dump out the brake clean.  Repeat until clean.  Then, apply a little WD40 or something similar for lubrication.

Otherwise, it will have to come apart and have the spring tightened.

No big deal either way.
