Just want to say "Hi" to everybody
I am a brand new owner of z71.
Just got it last Sunday, went through "break-in" as per Rebelss. Not sure if was needed, but I sure enjoyed it

. Starts with 1 pull runs great, can't wait for ice to come.
Last spring I reasoned myself into z51 8in, but just couldn't resist 71cc and 10in.
No more sweaty me swearing on my knees trying to get through the ice in spring with my 8in hand drill, after I just cut a hole for my son.
I envision freedom of me running around the ice making holes anywhere I want just because I want.
At least I hope it works this way.

I am thinking about buying a 8inch mako this year. What do you guys think of it? How much better is it then the stingray? How much worse than the shark? It fits the upper end of my price range at $300. is it a good auger for that price? Oh ya I live in SD if that makes any difference.

The Stingray will do the job just fine, the difference between them is engine size. The Stingray is 33 CCs and the mako is 43 CCs.

Welcome, Rukus3!!!! You're at the right place!!! Let's attempt to answer that truckload of questions...got any more?? Just kiddin'!!!

I can sum it up quickly....the Mako is the great "Middle of the road" auger in the Eskimo lineup. It's more powerful and also more heavy than the Stingray. The Shark is the top of the line as far as power is concerned, and again, heavier than the Mako. All the components are the same; the auger, flighting, and Quantum blades. All have the Viper engine. All handles are aluminum this year.
What you are buying is a bigger engine; more torque, more power. Look at it like this...if ya buy a F-150 pickup, regardless of the model, the basic truck is the same, but you can get the screamin' 6 cylinder dual turbo Eco-boost, or move up to the 5.0 liter 302, or have the 5.3 Triton V8 Hawg like I have.
You have to ask yourself how many holes you'll be drilling, how thick is the ice, and how hard are you planning on pounding your auger? I've have my Stingray for 6 years now, without a hiccup. I fish northern Minnesota, and rip through 30" of ice and more without a problem. I don't however, "swiss-cheese" the ice, if you do this, you probably want the Mako or Shark. I went with the Stingray for weight, I've had 4 spinal surgeries and can't lift, pull, or tug much of anything, yet I can handle the Stingray.
I guess go for the most bang for your buck; you can never be overpowered as far drilling.
If you're just a weekender and weight is an issue, the Stingray can handle anything I've thrown at it....

Reb, sorry I wasn't there to defend ya grand poo ba, but my dogs ate my manual, so I had no clue. Looks like you got everybody straightened up though( I thought you could). I wanted to show you all what the snow we got today brought in with it........ my new Mo! The Z71, started on the 4th pull, sure sounded sweet.

Thanks for all the feed back. This will be my first power auger so I don't know if I will make Swiss cheese or not. I will hopefully make to scheels soon (one of two places in Sioux falls to sell power augers) and will look at them in person. For a $30 dollar difference I am thinking the Mako.
