best knot for 2lb. line
« on: Dec 15, 2005, 05:52 PM »

I replaced my old 4 lb. line last night with 2 lb. and I was having a heck of a time tying a strong knot. Does anyone have a favorite knot for this thin line that will hold?

I use 2 lb. line nearly all the time (on the ice) and use the Trilene knot as well.   Definitely wet the line before cinching down, and don't cinch too tight or it will break.  After all, it's only 2 lb. test!!  LOL!!

I use mostly a Palomar knot and I had no problem last year.  Even landed an 8 lb carp on 2 lb test without a problem.

I would vote for palomar knot.  I feel it is easier to tie in cold, and I have never screwed up tieing it while I have messed up the trilene knot probably because of my impatience or crappy vision up close. LOL.  Summary - both are good if you can tie them correctly.

I always use the uni knot on my jigs, very simple and easy. Wrap around the line five times, then through the opening and pull.

Just make sure you wet the line before pulling any knot tight.

Am I the only one that still uses an improved clinch?

No- The I-C is a good knot, too!
It's easier to tie when your fingers are really cold and you forgot the bi-focals.

How's that work?  Just do the last pass-thru twice?  Both pass-thru's twice?

Last pass through twice, greatly increases the strength according to tests....if you double the first one up, then you've got a regular old Trilene knot...

I use an improved clinch knot mostly. Lately I have been using the Palomar more and more and liking it. As previously stated ya got to wet any knot before tightening.

I still use an improved clinch knot for every line to lure knot...it's easy, and it's what I've grown up using.  I have used a double I.C. knot lately, and it really is an awesome knot...I'm actually really bad at 'reading" the knot tying diagrams, plus I have stupid fingers, so knots like the palomar knot are tough for me...but some people love them.  All a matter of personal taste and preference really.

I like a good loop knot. You really get good action from your jig or hook.

A palomar would likely be the easiest, strongest knot.  I still use the improved clinch sometimes too, since thats the first knot I started with, still have a habit of using it sometimes, but never with light line or braid.   8)

I've been using the palomar more and more but also use a Uni knot and improved clinch.

Sometimes 2lb. is too heavy when your using a tiny jig with a size 18 hook or so in 25 fow.

i would use a centuari knot= 96% line strength
but a jansik knot is strong and super easy to tie, they say you can tie it in the dark
the jansik also has a better presentation.

I just started using the palomar knot recently and am LOVING it! Quick and strong. Was losing fish with the improved clinch (maybe because I wasn't very good at tying it), but haven't come even close to losing one since switching.

Only use the improved clinch in rare circumstances now -- sometimes the tackle calls for it. And, it's the knot my late grandfather taught me to tie, so it has some sentimental value to me.
