Anchoring a permanent shack??
« on: Mar 03, 2021, 09:29 AM »
I have a 8X16 all aluminum shack with a alum diamond plate floor and 6' Teflon skies. Its insulated heavily with 3" in the floor and 2" in the walls and ceiling. Its 11 years old and works perfectly for my needs. The last two days here in Downeast Maine the winds have been 40-50 mph. I blocked up my shack 8" when I left on Sunday and it made it fine. I am looking for a strong ice anchor system. I have learned from the past not to drill a hole on each corner to use for anchoring as they can flood the area in warm temps and high winds they can open up large enough for a shack to fall into  (ask me how I know, 6X8 floating in a hole  :-\). I searched on this site but its mostly pop-ups that are mentioned. Seems like some have used true ice anchors for ice climbing with success.
Are there any other options for a strong screw down anchor system?

I have thought about that too on the permanents, but in reality, even on my aluminum shack, in the worst case scenario I don't think the wind would ever get bad enough to do much more than blow the shack off the blocks.  I have read good things about the high quality climbing anchors, that might be your best option.

Depending on access through your floor,  we used to loop and piece of chain around one of the floor joists and drill a hole into the ice.  Once re frozen you couldn't move the hut more and an 1 or two in any direction.

I anchor my wheelhouse with chains on each corner.  My chains have a piece of rebar welded to them.  I drill holes partially into the ice 4"-6" deep and the drop the chain and rebar in them.  I then fill the hole with water which freezes.

I also have ratchet straps which are anchored high on each corner.

I use to use a chain but found it was a pain to get out when I wanted to move , now i cut a 14" piece of 2x4  drill a hole in the center and tie a length of 1/2 rope to it and drip it down a hole next to my hut.
When its time to move I just cut the rope at the ice.
