Title: Fish Trap Scout raising/removing/replacing seat?
Post by: Brian A on Jan 13, 2021, 07:30 AM
Hey guys. I just read through the fish trap mod thread and found a few things but I wanted to ask a question

I have not ice fished in several years but am getting back into it. I have a Scout, its up north at my cabin so I cannot mess with it here at home

I am going fishing on Sat at the cabin.

Last time I was there a few weeks ago, I pulled out the trap and sat in it. I realized the seat is too low for me now as I have a bad knee and am just older now!

So I am looking at options.

I took a boat seat cushion and I can put that on the seat to raise it up some, that will probably get me through this trip on Sat. But I want to do something better.

My plan now is that I have a seat pedestal from an old boat that I think I can just unbolt the trap seat and bolt it in there, I think the bolt pattern is the same. If not I can probably make it work. But it might be too high and then my head would hit the top of the trap. Not really sure.

Other ideas I have are just getting rid of the seat and supports and putting a folding camping chair in there.

Or maybe spacing up the existing seat with wood or metal blocks.

Another option is my folding hunting blind chair. I also have a lightweight aluminum and canvas boat deck chair. And metal folding chairs like in a bingo hall. But thats kind of heavy

So I have lots of chairs I could try lol. Just not sure if they would work in a trap type shelter

I am taking 1/2 off Friday and can work on it when I get there for a few hours if I think I can change things without too much trouble.

If not I will use the seat cushion and bring the trap home with me and figure something out

Just wondering if any of you guys have any thoughts on this. I dont know if a camp chair would fit in there like I was thinking?

Any ideas would be great as I sit here at work in another boring meeting LOL

Thanks

I completely removed the seat and seat attachment.  Used a old style fold up web lawn chair.  Very happy with the set up.

thanks Dave

I may end up doing just that

I did find assembly instructions on the Clam website. So now I know how the seat and support goes together.

I think what I am going to try first is to put the pedestal I have in there, looks pretty easy. If I dont like that or its too tall then I will take the whole thing out and do like you do

Appreciate the time taken to reply to me

Just to update since I hate to leave my threads hanging

Raising the seat with the boat seat pedestal really didnt work too well. Problem was even though I cut it down as far as I could, the seat ended up being too high. I could not reach stuff on the ice like my vexilar while sitting in it. And my head hit the canvas top

I also didnt like the extra weight and the whole thing felt out of balance.

Just didnt like it.

So on my way home from the cabin (I brought the fish trap back with me, which by the way, is a Pro not a Scout) I stopped at Harbor Freight and bought the folding camping directors style chair.

Got home and removed the old seat and supports. Put the chair in the tub. Super nice! Not too tall. Very sturdy and comfy!

So thats what I will use. It does take more room in the tub setup but I can work my storage around that. And its lighter. Also has a bunch of storage pockets on one side, which will come in very handy, and a folding table on the other (which I probably wont use)

And a bonus is I can use it around the campfire in the soft water season.

That's a fancier chair than what I used but both should do the same thing.  I especially like the arm support while jigging for panfish.  I have the front bar set up outside the tub and the rest of the chair in the tub.

Yeah this chair wont allow the front legs to be outside. Actually what happened was while I was on the ice with the raised pedestal seat, I did a crappy rush job the night before screwing it down and it pulled apart and the pedestal separated form the mount.

So I had something like this but real old with a back on it in the truck. I also had an old boat seat cushion. I brought these just in case. So I ran back to my truck and got them and fished with that. All 4 legs are in the tub with this too

After that seemed to work ok I decided on the Harbor Freight chair for $25

Thats basically what I had to begin with. It did not have the bench seat the older ones did. Its comfortable the problem was it was too low for my bad knees to get out of anymore. Used to work fine when I was younger

Ditto.  removed the tubular rails and seat.     saved 12 lbs.      replaced with a 6 gal bucket with cushion top.    portable
