Title: Looking for ice
Post by: onlyhrdwtr on Dec 29, 2023, 08:32 AM
Any ice in NE Pa?  Not even a hint of it in Ct or R.I. Hope it isn't going to be another bad year.

You and everyone else in most of the US is desperate for some safe ice. We all feel your pain, with the exception of those lucky Canadians and some guys in MT, ID, CO. The Adirondacks and MN, to name a couple of usually reliable December ice fishing meccas, are without ice right now. That is all you need to know to understand how bad it is right now, and don't waste your time thinking that there is a sliver of ice to be found in the states that you inquired about.

If your passport is valid, you should drive or fly to Quebec and contact FreshwaterPhil to do some ice fishing.

I guess I'm just looking for that little glimmer of hope for some fishing this season, in my old stomping grounds of Ne Pa.

Looking like we might not get on the ice until late Jan this year. If so, that’s the latest for FIRST ICE that I can remember!  ::)

We have had ice since right before the 14in of snow we got last weekend here in pike county. It's still there and temps are dropping big time this weekend. I think it has begun!

I heard there is about an inch of slushy ice on Fiddle Lake. Anyone have any info on Prompton and Lake Alden/Long Pond. Looks like another ice free season here in R.I. and Ct. I always try to fish Prompton in February every year. Last year was outstanding in mid Feb. But got too warm and was only able to fish 4 days of a 10 day trip in the area. Lets hope for the best.

I'm in Pike county and we have about 2inches of ice since the 4th prior to the snow storm. We got 12+ inches of snow the 6th and then 4 inches of rain but the lakes held and kept their ice. With the Temps in the teens starting tomorrow we will be ice fishing by next weekend.

Yep! Lakes were still capped yesterday even though temps hit 50 in the morning. We’ll be fishing by next weekend! I’m thinking I may even take Wednesday or Thursday off.  ;)

Hey guys! FINALLY! stepped foot on water this weekend, first time in 2 years in Ct. Saturday brutal cold no bites. Sunday did better, but it was good getting out there on the ice. Heading back home to Ne. Pa. on Thursday, cant wait. Nothing like fishing back home. Saw on the post that Belmont looks good, heard rumors that they dropped the water level, is that true? Anyway, is anyone fishing Prompton, my favorite lake, been fishing there before they put the boat launch in. (showing my age). If anyone knows fill me in. Thanks.

Just got back to R.I. after a quick trip to Ne Pa. Got there Thursday morning. Visited family and friends so I didn't get on the ice till around 3:00. Staying at a friends house lake Alden.  5 inches but I would say only good 4. Just jigged up a couple of bluegills, fished till dark. Talked to some friends and they fished Upper Woods and did good, 5 inches. Friday checked Prompton looked really not good, didn't even try to get on. Back to Alden did really good, 9 smallmouth, 6 largemouth, 7 pickerel and about a dozen bluegills. Saturday fished Alden again. 5 Smallmouth 1 largemouth, 5 pickerel, and a nice mess of bluegills, with a nice crappie to top it off. By then there was only 3 inches, but I got some time in. Looking to head back in mid February, Also I'm a catch and release guy.

Is Alden open to the public or is this a private lake?

Alden has a state side where it is public, I'm lucky enough to get on the private side. There was 3 guys off the boat launch, didn't know how they made out. But they sounded like they were doing good too.

Is the entire lake accessible to the public if accessed from the public side or is it separated into public and private sections?

Took a trip to the UP last week.  Fishing was rather slow, but did manage some pike and all & all was good to get on the hard water for what will probably be the only time this year ... despite putting up with 30 mph winds early in the week.

I know it's not thick but I went by wallenpaupack today around 5pm and I would say peeking over the dike about 90% of the lake is locked up. Definitely a good sign of hope with how large it is. Will have a bunch of friends up this weekend to hit some of our lakes in Pike County. Stay safe!

Hey guys
Just checked some ponds in CT, its all done here. Heading back home, Wayne County, on the 9th for my annual 9 day fishing trip. Just hoping it will still be ok. Last year only got 4 days out of it. Got word earlier in the week that Upper Woods was getting shaky but they did good on bluegills.  Just got a call that Fiddle Lake is 5 inches but really only a good 4, really slow bite, that was today. Really want to hear any info on Prompton. Try to fish it every year on the 14th, (birthday celebration.) I have no news on Lake Alden/ Long Pond hoping to hear on it tomorrow. Whatever I hear I'll let you know. Any info on Belmont or White Oak?  Whatever info you guys have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Belmont always first to freeze and last to go . Again …. Different world .

Somehow I missed jjp625 report about Duck Harbor and Long pond (Feb 4). That sounded promising. Heading in tomorrow, should be at Long Pond around 3:00. Hoping to fish at least 9 days. Wherever there is ice on any pond. Checked the long range weather forecast seems really iffy. But I'm going to give it my best shot.  If there is any input on any ice conditions would be really appreciated.  Thanks

Hi Guys,

Just got back to R.I. after a 9 day planned trip back to Ne.Pa., got 3 days out of it. Got in early Friday.  Stopped by Prompton on the way thru.  Guy was by the dam said really slow bite, on 2 1/2 inches. Dropped by the boat launch A guy was there only about 50 foot out, got 2 nice bass right off the bat but nothing else. I made it to Lake Alden, on the pond around 1:00, 4 inches and really slow 5 small perch. Saturday hit Prompton boat launch, really only about 3 inches, 2 small perch. Shot Up to Fiddle Lake rough getting on but good 5 out farther. But again a slow bite. Sunday was back at Prompton, ice was getting really not good, ropes and life jacket, about 2 1/2 inches, 2 perch. Calling it quits and filled my boots, went up to my thighs. All reports I got was a slow bite everywhere. Forecast said a bunch of snow coming in so I figure I'd call it. I packed up this morning, and headed east. But I have to say it was great standing on Ne.Pa water even if was only for a short time. And on top of I caught fish, so it was better than great.

Glad you got a few days in at least! Sorry I never made it to Alden! I was leery of driving over an hour and then having to turn around and go home. Promised Land is only 30 min from me, so I went there this weekend instead.

Hopefully we will get some colder weather and will be back on the ice soon. I would like to get up to Alden and Duck if possible this year............

They got a couple of my buddy’s jigs today and I must have had a BIG one that bit right thru my snell! I was dropping the smelled hook baited with a minnow down the hole to set my JawJacker and it hit before I even got it down to depth. I thought it either dropped it or stripped the minnow when the line went slack...............bu t I reeled up and the hook and 1/2 the snell was gone!  :o

Did you know the conditions at Belmont Lake? My son said they are draining it next year and there is unlimited catch. They don't always plow the road and there is a lot of runoff.
Title: Re: Looking for ice
Post by: onlyhrdwtr on Feb 21, 2024, 03:21 PM
Ya, I heard the same thing about draining it. Also heard they dropped it a couple feet already. Fished it about 4 years ago, If I remember, did pretty decent, my buddy got a really nice smallmouth that day. Went back the following year after about 2 inches of snow overnight. Guys were on the pond. So I figure I'll head down the launch. Wasn't thinking about there were no other tire tracks going down there. Started slowing down but really didn't, there was ice under the snow. Thought I was going to make it on to the lake. Finally got stopped. Tried getting out but no way on ice. I was finally able to get in touch with someone to pull me up the ramp about 2 hours later. Yes there is runoff there, so be careful. It was my fault I didn't pay attention or know the conditions at the launch. Really big learning experience there. Good Luck, Be safe. Keep us informed how you make out.

Well, made it back to R.I. this afternoon. Finished a 4 day trip back in NE.PA. Started at Alden Thursday, 2 small bluegills and a 20 inch pickerel, on 4 inches of pretty good ice, also found out that was the last day for the lake to be open. Friday went to Fiddle lake good 6 inches, a ton of perch between me and my brother, all kind of small. Saturday went to Belmont a ton of fishermen, met some really good guys and gals. Pretty slow, a couple of perch on tip ups and a couple gills jigging. Sunday hit Prompton. A guy was going on by the boat launch, he checked had 3 inches, said there was a truck by the Old Hawthorn Trail, guys went over the hill. I went to the dam, 2 guys there. A bunch of hit and runs on the tip ups, a couple perch and a bunch of different size panfish.  Called a season. I guess I'll say it was great that I stood on the water but it was fantastic that I caught fish when ever I was out. Figure it was a total of 3 trips , 11 days. Hope for better conditions next year. Good luck to everyone might get another week in back there. Be safe and don't fill your boots.

Then said they couldnt find a hole where he went thru. ??? Then later said they recovered a body. The whole thing is a crapshow. I hope this isnt just some bullcrap story going around. There was also a report that locals called about this on Tuesday saying there was gear on the ice but nobody around.

There are conflicting reports now but the latest is they are still looking for him. Truck is parked, gear on the ice and a dog wandering around................ so sad! 😩

But I can’t find anything in the news about it. 🤔
I checked the local news sources and haven’t seen anything, either.  I can’t imagine this wouldn’t be big news in NEPA.  I hope is a myth or a rescue.

Wish it wasn’t but I’m afraid it is................a buddy(reliable source) has a relative in the Waymart Fire Department who told him ”my fire captain says he is still missing as of 10am this morning.”

It's all just noise until it becomes an official news report, and three days in, there is no official news report about a search and rescue mission going on at DH.

Heard rumors about it a week ago, hoping it was only rumors. Like guys, said there were no news reports. A friend sent me the info today.  Tough news, sad.
