Title: The strikeMASTER Recovery - and teardown - 6" Black Ice.. Don't be fooled!
Post by: flaggs on Jan 03, 2010, 07:50 PM
"Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It's not something you learn in school. But if you haven't learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven't learned anything."
— Muhammad Ali    :flex:

Porter and Bosco, rest assured I have learned the meaning of your friendships!  Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Today was a great day fishing with these guys at one of Porters honey holes… I got out there at around 8 and they had already been there for awhile. Man, the winds were blowing strong all day but the snow did let up now and again. What a pain in the A$$ the snow was lugging the equipment out…   We were fishing on 6” of nice black ice. Hey frozen, let me know when you’re upgrading your quad and talk to me before looking to trade her in. Could have used one today, that's for sure!  Speaking of Frozen, it was about 3-3:15 and Porter and Bosco were heading out so I decided to walk up with them with just my auger and cooler so the load would be a bit lighter for my final trek. I was going to stick it out and fish till dark.  Walking about 25 feet from (I’m guessing) where we got on and about 50 yards from shore… BAM!   :o In for a swim!  Me, the Auger and the cooler! Holy crap, that frigin water was cold!   :woot: I was up to my armpits (not hitting bottom) I paused so as to just take in the shock and surprise to just get my shlt together (I dunno 5 seconds), all the while hearing Porter in the background ROLL ROLL ROLL. Lifting my feet first to the back float and experiencing the effect of the Arctic Armor floating my full boots to the surface, I rolled out on to the ice about 10 feet to my left, and stood up. Yup, my Strikemaster Cobra swallowed. **censored**!!   :%$#!: I took two step2 to the left and BAM!  :o Back in same  exact shlt/situation! I thought, holy crap...  I'm going to ahve to swim to shore!  :-\ Diddo on the procedure as stated above. Porter and Bosco quickly got me to my truck and then proceeded to climb down a huge cliff (away from where we went on and off) and retrieved my tilts which were still in the water, my vintage box, shiner bucket, and everything that was still on the ice,    while I stayed in the truck, ringing out socks, shirts, etc. and trying to get warm.

These guys are the absolute best and I owe them both all the gratitude in the world!  Porter and Bosco, Thank you.

It was still a great day fishing and we pulled some really nice bass and pickerel through the ice!  I am just really pi$$ed that my auger is sitting at the bottom.. I loved that dam thing..   :'(  I guess I need to get another one until I can recover it. I’ll get it… I just need a DEEP freeze to get it. Dam!

I should also say to all you guys who have an arctic armour… It IS the best investment you can make! As I got into the back float position, it lifted my legs (with my boots FULL of water) and positioned me real nice for the Roll. My wife thinks I should write to them and thank them as well!  I think she has a good idea…

Anyone going out tomorrow?  PM me!  ;)2 ;)2

Just another day in the life of....

NOTHING worse ...................... Went through a few years ago...about 50  feet deep where i went in. was do to a spring in the lake even though the ice was 8 plus all over. Pencilled in at an angle and found myself under THICK ice. Tried to break through with my fists...no luck....After what seemed like 2 hours(minute or 2) I regrouped and swam straight down about 10 feet and looked up and  all around...saw the "light" from the hole about 12 feet away  swam to it and was helped out by a friend. Hands bloody..clothes froze solid by the time i made it off the ice!!!!!LIFE  is  good!

Guys - There are some great pics at the end of this post... but I have a few things I want to share first:

A great day of fishing, but more importantly the safety of a fellow IS member was ensured and many mental notes were made by me since this afternoon. I'll keep it short... but here goes:
1. Roger - Boscoe and I are glad you're OK... that's the most important thing... nothing else even comes close in my book.
2. Guys here's some advice if you happen to go through:  #1 Rule - stay calm.. don't try to rapidly grab at edges.. they'll just break
3. Rolling yourself out is actually the quickest way.. trust me - I watched Roger do it TWICE in a row. Then get to a warm truck quick - get the wet stuff off asap.
4. If anyone is on the fence when buying an ice fishing suit... I can say WITHOUT A DOUBT Artic Armor does float and kept Roger on top of the water once he was horizontal. Enough said...
5. This pond had 6-8 inches of black ice and then all of a sudden just slush with just some snow on top ... most likely due to weeds/current, etc. Be careful on these snow covered ponds - conditions can change within a foot or two..
6. Lastly, fish together guys... can make all of the difference when you face trouble...

I also wanted to thank Boscoe of all of his assistance with retrieving all of Roger's gear and hauling it through the woods - you're strong as an ox kid!

Now for the pics - ENJOY and BE SAFE!

Glad that the auger was the only thing lost as it could have been your life. Glad that it turned out with you being able to tell us about it. I guess it goes back to the old saying that there is no such thing as safe ice.

Thank you  guys for all your notes. Great bunch you guys are!

It is pretty intense when it happens. This is the second time for me in 35 years, but the first time pretty much all-in!
The first time was a leg only. Those times when I would push the limit on ice thickness, I always played it out in my head on what I would do if I went in.. the Practice in my head definately played out today and take note of porters reflections..

It was a good day fishing!  the added excitement, we could have done without  ;)

Those of you who have gone in, I too am glad you're all good and here with us to talk about it!  intense..

roger, thank god your ok!!!  This is why i hate first ice with snow on it.  One thing i like to do is this. visit the lakes you intend to fish during the first stages of ice growth and note the springs and other areas that take longer to freeze.  ice changes so much day by day thats why i feel there is no such thing as safe ice.  do your homework guys and be safe. mike

quads are good to go. Just don't go right across the middle as that is the last place to freeze.

Flaggs, you're a lucky guy! Buy a Lottery ticket! I'm glad to here that you are OK thanks to your friends and your Arctic Armor.

I am one of those guys that does a lot of studying the "freeze patterns" as the season begins. This year it has been especially challenging. The tiny ponds out of the wind froze first and seem to be fine. Some of the larger ponds started to freeze and then the wind shifted the ice upsetting and repositioning it. Just before the snow, most of the open water on the larger lakes froze up and I ventured out to see how thick it was and found 4 3/4". (Haverhill)
I have only gotten out to fish once on Saturday and found that the ice thickness seemed to vary from 7"-3 1/2", and we were near the shore. I still have concerns for myself and everyone's safety. There's nothing more I want to do than drive my 4-wheeler out to my favorite spots. ( after all, doing donuts never gets old!) Unfortunately, the snow is now going to insulate the ice from freezing, to some extent.

I want to warn everyone to be aware that you can't be sure of what's under the snow until you drill, measure, check and then follow your tracks and don't venture else ware. We all can get caught up in the excitement of getting out there to fish, but no fish is worth your life or someone else's!

Also and most important, if some one goes in, CALL 911 first then stay near the person and coach them threw it. Don't try to play the hero and head out there. You could end up in trouble too.

You guys are great people and we all share a great forum, lets all come home safely each trip.

Hey guys, boscoe (Adam) here.  Yesterday was a great day until Roger's unfortunate accident.  A lot of things went right during that scary situation.  First and foremost Roger not being alone. Everyone keeping calm.  Roger knowing what to do-not panic and rolling off.  Things could have turned out much worse, thank god they didn't.  Like someone said above the ice freeze this season has been really weird in different parts of New England.  Jeff (porter) was in Northern VT a week ago with very little ice cover showing if any at all.  2 days ago I was on 8 inches of solid black ice at home in CT.  Yesterday the ice seemed stong almost everywhere but I made note several times, of white ice pockets under or within the black ice we were on, after shoveling snow off in various spots.  Even with the near zero temps yesterday we had slush developing in areas near drilled holes.  I know I will never go out alone again.  The end result, no matter how big it is, isn't worth not being able to go home and see my family and friends again.

On a lighter note the day out on the ice was actually pretty good.  Great company-what really matters the most.  Lots of big pickeral-all out of the same 2 holes, about 30 total bass with a few between the 2-4lb range.  Most of what we caught were on tip ups.  Roger cooked up some mean sausage with peppers and onions subs that would have rivaled most of the ones sold around Fenway park.  In hindsight though, I should have let Rogers kitchen, my clam shelter, air out a little bit before packing up as I could smell it in my car the whole way home  ;)

I'm really glad Roger is ok.  Sometimes, when things like this happen, its a good wake up call as to how things can change out on the ice and that you can never be too careful.  On that note though, I can't wait to go out again.  :)

Here are a couple of photos from the day.

Nice fish Roger.

This guy had a bait that I threw in the whole a couple minutes before in his mouth and the one from the tip up.  Greedy little b-stard.

Thanks for reading.

Flaggs, glad to hear that you are ok.  I've always hated to ice fish alone and now that I have read your story I probably never will.  As someone already said, this seems to be an especially challenging year to figure on ice thickness.  I have only been out once this year for a couple hours one afternoon.  We checked a couple places and the measures of ice thickness were eyeopening.  Really inconsistent.  One spot the spud went through in two hits and the next had 5 - 8 inches.

So glad your story had a happy ending.

Glad it all worked out!  When I told my wife how much $ I wanted to spend on a "jacket and bibs" she thought I was nuts.  When I told her how much weight it floated, she asked why I hadn't bought it sooner  ;D

Great stuff that IDI gear!

Flaggs, I have done nothing but think since I read this post. We were fishing at a pretty big lake yesterday and as we were riding the sleds across the lake I noticed a few wet spots in the snow. The lake is around 60" deep in some spots and it made me think. Is it safe?? I was not slowing down long enough to find out. I am really happy you are safe man... The auger is replaceable. We need to fish together soon so I can hear you laughing and having a good time. Bob L.

Glad to hear all went well with your swim. I bought an Arctic Armor last year. Now all my fishing buddies have them, not that they needed new suits, it's just that they wanted a suit that floats, just in case. Aren't you glad you didn't have a nice warm Carhart bibs and jacket on?

Boscoe,

Great perspective!  Glad you posted the pic of that hungry hog!  That was really something!

To ALL you guys out there.... Again, thanks for the heartfelt concern and all responses! We Icefishermen are most definately a force in numbers and serious about our sport. Proof is right here!

What is incredible in this particular thread is that there are guys here who have been Icefishing for a TON of years, me included, and are humbled by what they have read and I experienced. Just when you think you know everything about the sport, think again. I know I have been humbled by everyones input, advice, perspective, and genuine concern. I learned a lot this past weekend, learnings that will be with me forever! There is one post here where the fellow fisherman had gone under... I can't even imagine how catestrophic that event must have been.

The auger being gone is SO insignificant compared to what could have happened. I'd give up 10 of them to have the same outcome. The buddies that were with me were smart!  They did not try and come to me to help, they yelled commands, were ready for 911 calls, when safe - walked me up to the truck immediately, hugged me (no jokes please... it was important) and then thought nothing to grab a rope out of my truck and went on in another totally different area, closer to where we fished all day to retrieve my gear, as they knew how important that gear was to me. Porter called me a few times since the incident to make sure all was good. WOW!  Jeff and Adam - The Opitomy of "having your back"

My advice is to play out the scenario in your head... over and over. It played out real well for me! It was less than 1 second and I was in up to my chest with my arms out like airplane wings holding me up. I didn't even realize the auger was gone. I sat still in the water a few seconds (5 - 10 max) totally still, and thought 'what's next', and got into the back float position (all the while porter yelling out commands) and rolled out. TWICE! I was not in the water more than a total of probably 1.5 to 2 minutes. Scary?  you bet your a$$. Would I do anything different? probably roll another 10 feet for a total of 20 before crawling or attempting to stand.  Did I tell Eileen how serious the situation really was... Nope... I know she would be a wreck everytime I walked out the door. I told her how great the AA suit worked and that it was the best gift she has ever given me. she took great comfort in that.

Thinking about the 100's of time I go fishing alone... there is no excuse. With all you guys out there, I won't do it again...

Lastly, I'm already planning the recovery of the auger... for sure... I took photos of the cooler out on the ice today and a few of the trees I was next to to get a line so I can hone in on the precise area in case the cooler disappears. Also, I don't want the full tank of gas to leak out either even though its only a quart.... It still cant be good if it all leaks out. right now, I am trying to source a flat bottom aluminum boat or a john boat to get it maybe this weekend. There is already a few guys who have volunteered to be the 'recovery' team.

Thanks guys... I certainly hope to see you on the ice!

Flaggs!   aka_Roger

I'm with Roger... I will seriously consider never going out on my own again... unless the ice is definitely 8 inches plus... even then, anything can happen.

Even if you fall through and get out... another danger still exists - hypothermia. I watched Roger slow down completely as we walked away from the scene.. as much as he wanted to rest and get over the shock and cold... I kept him walking and his blood pumping... then got him into a warm vehicle to remove some layers. Keep this in mind guys... if you are alone.... just how far are you from your car or any place of warmth???

From my experience 2 things really scare me about ice fishing and we must be EXTREMELY careful:

1. Late ice/honeycomb ice - I put a leg through this kind of ice on Browning Pond two years ago trying to extend my season til mid March. Though I near broke my kneecap as it crashed to the ice. Some scary stuff guys.

2.. Any ice with snowcover (of ANY depth) - lack of ice condition visibility, can step in an old hole/injure yourself, etc. Areas where snow has drifted also puts alot of pressure on the ice in that area (more pressure than you realize).

Lastly guys, I witnessed something (I had never seen) this weekend that changed the ice conditions on the lake we were fishing on. I fished the pond on Saturday by myself and drilled about 30 holes. That was the time the storm was closest to MASS along with it's very low barometric pressure. On Sunday when Boscoe and I arrived at the lake - we noticed that there was areas of water/slush on the ice beneath the snow - some of this layer was lightly frozen. As the storm was pulling away on Sunday, higher pressure was building and I could see water rising slowly out of the holes as the day went on. I've read about this online on icefishingtoday.com and thought it was impossible. Well let me tell you -it's definitely possible... I saw it firsthand.

Thanks for listening guys and be safe!

This was something they were talking about on TV 7 Boston. They said that the intense low pressure was causing the ocean level to rise and along with the incredibly high astronomical tides caused by the "blue moon".

Roger.....As I stated in my first reply, I am glad things turned out the way they did. I did not get the chance to thank Jeff (Porter) and Adam (Boscoe) on a heroic job they did, I was in disbelief when I read the post. Quick thinking and level heads took over in a situation that could have been bad very very bad. Jeff and Adam...what can I say ....you saved the life of one of our own and retrieved his equipment....words escape me, I can imagine how Roger feels.
I always used to carry 50' of rope with me, but now I have tied a boat cushion to one end of the rope. I now carry a pair of sweatpants, sweatshirt, knit hat, and socks in my truck. Hopefully not for me, but if needed, for one of my brothers that might need help some day. Jeff and Adam you are heros and I am glad to be part of this organization.

Flaggs I am glad you are ok The man upstairs was looking after all three of you that day.  I have been wanting to buy the artic armor for a while it all had to do with the cost.  Money is tight these days.  I will be selling some stuff I no longer use to purchase it as it will save my life.  I was just having this conversation with a friend of mine the other day as he goes out often by himself and does not own the artic armor. also he is at alot of private ponds where there are not alot of other fisherman so it really is not a good situation.

Fortunately I have fallen through the ice except on the edges getting on or off when they get soft.  I have been involved in two rescues on the wood river in RI in april which is very cold.  One was a couple who had the canoe anchored on both sides and when it went  it filled up and down she goes.  The women was going with it as she would not let go do to shock we practically had to hit her with the paddle to get her to let it go, her husband was in a panic as he could not swim he did grab a life preserver as quick as possible.  We were able to get  both of them to shore.  I started a fire for them gathered up there gear was able to recover the canoe and followed them back to the launch.   The second one was on the same river farther up where the river was slower moving and had a tributary with shallows.  There were two guys in a canoe one had waders on and when the caonoe went over they filled up thank god he was in about 5 feet of water and we were able to get them quickly and get them to shore.

Flaggs I am glad you are good porter and adam great job.  I like what someone said in the posts above about having extra clothing and socks in teh truck for anyone in case of emergency.  Maybe a blanket also.  I always make sure my wife has a winter survival kit in her jeep as she has the kids 90 percent of the time and it can be cold if the vehicle breaks down.  A wise man once told me "better to have and not need it then to need it and not have it"

Go make those memories and be safe

D3

Flaggs -

Glad I could get your auger back buddy.. I felt bad all week about it. To the rest of IS... we played this one safe and actually had a lot of laughs doing it. I know Roger will get that thing humming by tonight. Thank you Chad and Karl for travelling to meet us today - much appreciated. See you guys in VT soon!

Oh yeah, I fished A1 from 7am till 11am - very slow for the 5 groups on the ice. Started off at 9 degrees and when I left it was 22. NO wind and bright sun. Ice conditions were 8-9 inches of solid black ice - MINT!  Of course 4-5 inches of snow on top in some areas...   Caught 6-8 fish.. bass and pickerel.... big bass was only 3 lbs but came on 6lb ultralight jig rod (teardrop spoon) - great fight. Tight lines guys! And BE SAFE!

I got a question for you guys about that arctic armor.  Do you need to have the bibs and the coat for it to work??  This post made me think about safety and how not good it would be for me to fall in wearing my big carhartt jacket and bibs!!  Would the bibs or the coat be best if you only had one??  Thanx.

The insulation that makes it buoyant work as just 1 piece of the suit. But you would have your legs buoyant and your top not or reverse. Which could be weird at first but would still help save your life. The stuff floats well because it absorbs no water.

I also after seeing this am shopping to buy a suit but cant afford the set. So I am going to buy the legs first.

Now:  Chapter 3.... Git'er Goin! ;)

After the agonizing disapointment in the first half of the Pats game, I heard an auger calling from afar and retired to the mad scientist's garage!

I know this should probably evolve into another "topic" but I wanted to add to the book for archive reasons...
Gear Box removed: it was floaded. blew it all out, removed the clutch and scuffed surface rust... checked seal, all is good
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh149/rogerakarr/augerrebuild001.jpg)

Tear into power head: removed pull start, tin, & tank (Pull start was clogged with Muck - Power Head must have been head down in muck) primer pump full of water. Removed plug and dropped mystery oil into cylinder and cranked until oil came flushing out of the carburator. Entire cylynder was loaded with water including carb. I measure ~1 3/4 cups of water out of both gear box and engine. It got a good soak  >:(
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh149/rogerakarr/augerrebuild004.jpg)

I cleaned and polished magnito (both flywheel and coil sides) and checked for spark. Got I nice blue arch ;D
This morning before work, I went and cranked her over and just a very minor resistance indicating there is still moisture in the cylinder so I flushed her again with Mystery oil, and cranked her over... Should be good without having to pull the head.

Tonight, I am going to remove the carb and  fuel pump, tear them down, clean, and reassembled sub components.
Should  be ready to crank up in a day or so...

Stay "tuned"

The insulation that makes it buoyant work as just 1 piece of the suit. But you would have your legs buoyant and your top not or reverse. Which could be weird at first but would still help save your life. The stuff floats well because it absorbs no water.

I also after seeing this am shopping to buy a suit but cant afford the set. So I am going to buy the legs first.

:note: this is just my gatherings from reading up on these suits while contemplating buying it today. I may be wrong, but I think I am right.

Correction: The arctic armour DOES absorb water. I was soaked right down to my underwear! The difference is the combination of the materials (inner and outer) that retain air boyancy. It does not "float" like an air tight suit, more-so it equalizes your wieght with ALL your SOAKED clothes and suit on. My boots were FULL of water and once I through my head back to get into a backfloat position, my legs (slowly but steadily) rose to the surface (five or 6 seconds). If you want to buy just 1 part, bibs would be the first, and the jacket later but save your pennies for the complete suit! The other noticable difference was even though I was soaked and cold, walking back to the truck, the heat my body was generating was maintained inside the suit, kind of like a wet suit, were as any cloth clothing sucks the heat right out of you.

I would save to get the whole suit at once if i had snow pants to wear on the ice. Wearing jeans right now gets cold so the waterproof warm bib would be a huge help for me lol

I have not been on shanty for a few days due to the non stop trap building so other people can go fishing. haha!! Frozen just spent the last few hours with me filming a charity project him and i are working on and told me to check this out.  hats off to all involved!!!  There are few great people out there, but this place is full of them. glad every one is safe! That thing better be running for the IH trip !  If not we'll just have frozen bring his chainsaw.  he'll need a 4' bar on it though! mike

The Artic Armor price can be a major deterrent for alot of people.. but I guess what is your life worth? If you could only get one thing for xmas/birthday/anniversary present, etc. This would be a great choice. The suit itself is also very light in it's dry weight. It's got to be 30% lighter than the Ice Armor suits at Dick's. It's extremely windproof as well.

I saw several guys at A1 this weekend wearing jeans, steel toe work boots, and several crewneck sweatshirts and that's it. If any of them went in, they wouldn't have barely a chance if no one was around and if people were around (which there was) they would be hypothermic by the time they got to the ramp. Flaggs is right, heavy wet cotton sticks to you like glue and saps your core temp.

Guys,
I been an avid reader of this site for three years and have only hooked up with a few of you, but between this event and last year on two occasions coming together to gather stuff for a fellow shanty members who had everything stolen and Uno man collecting stuff to bring to some cub scouts only shows what a great group of gentleman you guys really are...

Great job guys,

KK... it was pretty cool. I had visited a few times after the event to get bearings, took photos, and knew the general area. I had left my cooler at the spot but someone retrieved it leaving it on the road. fortuantely, they had left foot prints which led us right to the 2 holes I made when I went in. We drilled in the center of the 6' openning, and vuola, auger dead nuts in the center.  Frozen, I knew exactly where it was...  ;)

btw: if the guy who left myt cooler at the fence where we get on is reading, thanks!  We could have cooked the recovery day as all the stuff was still in it  ;D

You won't keep your head above water 10 minutes in 70 degree water dressed with winter Carharts and boots, 32 degree water you have almost no chance if things go really bad.

R & R Carb and pump diaphragm. Both had moisture. Critical cleaning and flushing (carb cleaner) to remove ANY moisture. just the slightest amount of moisture in the fuel system = frozen journals and diaphragm when on the ice or exposed to below freezing weather. Blew it all out with 90psi air. Looks all good. After removing the carb, I did notice the Reeds in the intake manifold on the power head are all frozen. That'll be tommorrow night.  ;D
(I am keeping all the parts in the garage so as to freeze any water for identification/location).

Looking good Roger.  Talked to Jeff last night on my way home from VT and he filled me in on the retrieval.  Can't believe you guys were on it that quick.  Nice safe work to all of you.  If I ever drop anything through the ice I know who to call  :)  BTW, nice job on the teardown - that carb looks new.  I'll be back on the ice with Porter this Saturday.  Hope to see some of you out there.

Thanks Boscoe....

Last night I just couldn't put the dam thing down so I moved onto the power head

Here is the intake manifold before removing. All the intake reed ports were blocked solid with ice.

R & R intake. Looks real nice. Reeds are in great shape.. no damage ..

Crank Shaft, connecting rod & bearing, piston... If you look close, you can see a white gunk on everything. This is water mixed with the oil and caked to all the internals. I flushed this out with gunk degreaser, blew and wiped it all out from both head side and intake side
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh149/rogerakarr/augerrebuildpowerheadandmanifold004.jpg)

and Viola, nice and clean! I oiled the roller bearings which connect the rod to the crank - nice... spins flawlessly! gunk is gone!

Now I am just letting everything sit next to the wood stove and let her heat up before reassembly. The gearbox looks good and that is also getting warmed up for reassembly. Should be all together tonight. I still need to tear down the pull crank and clean it out. It is perhaps the worst, loaded with mud.. no biggy though.

Frozen, I wish you were around for the first crank to we can also hear her run  ;D

Stay tuned!  This book is closing in on the epilogue!  I hope you guys are enjoying the writings!

Glad the tear down is going well Roge.  Thanks for documenting it all.  Perhaps when your done with that you can have a look at my Jiffy.  I'm just about ready to cut a hole in the ice and throw the dang thing IN.

BigBry was found Icefishing in the woods at Barton's cove!   ;D  Welcome Bigbry!  Thanks Capt!

So...

Here is the final stage. The engine is completely assembled and ready to be fired up tonight!  Eileen has made me promise not to fire it up without her as she was watching the whole process over my shoulder... She was pretty intrigued which shocked the **censored** out of me as she will have nothing to do with my Man-Town Garage  ;)

So, Prior to reassembly, I had used a staright 30w oil to pre-load the rod to crank bearing, the crank to case bushings, and the piston to rod wrist pin. It spins real nice with no load or resistance. She is going to push blue smoke as a result for probably the first 30 seconds. I then polished the reed plates and installed the intake manifold and Carburator, hooked up all the linkage and threw a new plug in her.

Reassembled the gear box and attached to powerhead. Used a new cold formulated graphite gear grease and preloaded all gear bushings with heavy wheel bearing grease.

Cleaned up all tin, pulled apart the pull rope assembly (man, this was the worste of the whole ordeal) kind of restored the 2 stickers for the tank and reattached, and gave her a good polishing!  The handles are stained permanantly from sitting in the mud. I tried to bleach it out to no avail.  :( I guess this will be the 'forever' reminder of this whole ordeal...  8)  Anyone ready to go fishing??  I am !

Flaggs!

Ready to go... Will load new gas tonight and see what happens!  I would have done it last night but it was almost midnight when I was done.  The epilogue is tommorrow and I will stop boring you all with this.. Thanks for the pateince, I just wanted to document the whole gig!

I'll bet that thing is going to run like it's brand new with all the work you just did to it.  I'm still glad I get to read your posts, instead of reading about you in the paper when you went through.  Cool heads, good gear, and some ice-smarts ended up turning this into a mechanical thread instead of a memorial thread.

Awesome job all around to everybody that was there for the dropping and the recovery of the auger.  I'm sorry you went in, but I'm glad it gave us all something to think about.  Way to take one for the team!

The engine was actually fired up last night. She took 5-6 pulls and lots of priming. This video is after I dialed in the Carb. An indeed, first pull every time thereafter!  Sweet!

Well guys,  this wraps up quite an experience! Like my info bar reads: "IceShanty.com: The best place to go fishing, when you can't go fishing" and revised with "and where friendships are made for a lifetime!"

acknowledgments:

This post is dedicated to my Dad, God rest his soul. He taught me EVERYTHING I know, and he loved that I was into Ice fishing, as much as he was into open freshwater. Countless hours right up to 'the end' playing with him in my garage. Last worked together on a 1952 evinrude, 2 cylinder 7.5 horse outboard that I bought at a yard sale for 20 bucks. Had not run in 31 years. Dad was visiting at my house for a week in 2003 and I  bought it for his visit. Like me, he had to be 'tinkering' and so we proceeded  to tear down the entire engine, together, and like above, it purrs like a kitten to this day!  He was definately with me when I went in.. Guaranteed!!!  :angel Thanks Pop! (Pic on my desk at the office)

To all you guys near and far: I feel like I grew up with you!  Your heartfelt concern was very humbling.  Thanks!
Porter, Boscoe, UnoMan, and FrozenShiner: Your unwavering friendship indeed will last a life time. Thank you.
Boscoe - you join the ranks... See above ;)
Eileen - Your the best!   :-*
Moderators of Ice Fishing Massachusetts - Thank you for allowing this thread to "switch gears" ! top notch moderators here fellas!

Lastly and most importantly, where you guys gonna be Saturday?   :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

Thanks again and best regards!

Yes quite the post, makes you think thing out alittle better , hopefully before your in the water. Frist time I saw this post. I often wonder what I would do if I went in or one of my friends and most of them are older. I carry a good rope and hope you never need it. Great job  Roger getting out, I sat next to you at the outing in Nov.

Crazy that its 6 years ago!  Lots learned from this experience. Lots!

and let me just say this; going into my 51st year ice fishing when you think you know everything about ice fishing, that's when you should not go anymore! be humble.

Got AA suit and auto inflate vest(now). In case coat is not on. I want to go again. Been through more than I wished. I don't fish moving water. I push the limits when it come to ice and feeder creeks. Weigh 250 and have learned the level &roll dance.
Scariest thing was some else going in not knowing what they would do.

Most have no idea how this solidified and brought together, not just these guys in the video, but ALL our mutual friends together as an Ice fishing brotherhood. As a matter of fact, this actual brotherhood extends to EVERY PERSON IN THE GROVE.  ALL of whom we are very proud and honored to call our Ice fishing Friends!

Many know this story and how this event has had direct connection to my actually having completed my Maine Registered Guide License (Tidewater), and being the holder of and actively using, my USCG Master Captains License.  Unreal.  reading this whole thread continues to humble me.

TONS of great info in this thread......From the thread topic name itself to all read in between the lines! TAKES a strong topic like this to bring out all the LURKER old timers who UNFORTUNATELY don't post anymore...........Just like the years in between the posts in this thread.......things change!
