Nice Gary, ironically I made some like that a couple of months ago. Their not as nice as his but will work for my perch traps.
As soon as I rest up from this last storm, I'm going to go down to the pond to see if a forsner bit will drill a hole in the ice. You'll need something to support that style. I tried slush and it didn't work well, especially on a warm day. With real thick ice, you could probably drill a shallow second hole?

Thats what I'm thinking Bob or maybe chip a hole. These are taller than the old ones I've seen. They are really light for their size and the trip mechanism works slick. Fun to try out. He brought them over to show me and I said I want a set!

It's just a different take on a trap design Artie. Old trap design. Traps are like moustraps. Here is the old trap he has which gave the inspiration. I saw him catch a salmon on years ago just messing around.

You could use them for what ever you want but I considered them a change, and the wind blows the flag around just enough to keep the bait moving. Mine are very sensitive. If it's real windy, I slide the felt part of the flag down on the tripper wire, so I don't get many wind flags. Here a pic. of mine, very crude compared to the workmanship of the ones Gary posted. Also, I think that forsner bit will make a nice set hole?

MG39 - you may want to consider a speedbore or auger bit as the forstner is a precision bit and is not intended to rip through material. It'll probably work but you may sacrifice some time. Ice isn't rock maple though... report back if you don't mind as I have an application for something like this and I would be curious to hear your results. Thx

if you set that up with the flag not connected over the hole and lay your line over the flag itself and down the hole, it makes for an extremely sensitive crappie trap. you can see the slightest hit

You are correct. I have some different traps I've made over the years and that method is one I've used. That particular one is difficult to set up, mainly because it's designed to have the wind move it a lot and is comprised of several pieces. I'll try to dig one out and post it
As for this recent set, I found out that a forsner bit is the "cats meow". I cut several holes and it was like drilling a block of cheese. The good thing is that the diameter of the hole is a tiny bit larger than my trap, so the extra slush will hold the trap very good. I thought it would be good, mainly because the cutting edge is very similar to that of an ice drill.

I first ice fished with my father's old perch traps. They were similar to the aforementioned. Yes, they did freeze in colder weather. They were okay on the warmer days of March. Thus someone invented the underwater trap, which is what most of us use now. Progress :tipup: :tipup: :tipup: :tipup: :tipup:
