How long can you keep mousies, maggots, mealies?
« on: Dec 20, 2009, 07:07 AM »
Im looking to order some bait for the season, how long do they last?  How do you keep them?  This will give me an estimate on how much to order.  Who is the cheapest online dealer?

Thanks,

Hey KB,

I usually order wax worms in 50 per container from grubco.com (12 minimum order). They are about $2 a container and only need to be kept at 55-65 degrees in a cool, dark place in the container they are shipped in. They will last a long time 1-2 months if needed. I also get fly larvae from them. You need to keep these in the refrigerator need freezing sealed with little air (one to two holes). I pay around $7 for 500. They last about a month or more. Maybe not the cheapest price but good service and fast shipping.

Good Luck,

Jeff

Good service from grubco.com and nice bait. I order 1000 waxies each year from them. They usually keep a good 1 1/2 - 2 months. Just take care of then by removing any dead ones when you notice them and store them around 55-65 deg. as stated in an earlier post. And make sure they are kept dry, also only take to the lake what you will use each day and keep them in a container that will prevent them from freezing( like the bait puck ).

Just keep the air away from the spikes as well.  And keep them in the fride they will last all season plus some. dont let them freeze.
Good luck fishing.

55 to 65 degrees or the fridge?  Just sounds like a big difference there?

I have kept spike for months in the fridge. I leave em in the original container and put a damp paper towel in the container every couple of days.

i have read a number of threads saying how spikes live forever, but the 500 euro larva i just bought a week ago seem to be dying off rapidly. They were delivered to my door in good shape, and i kept them in the blue plastic container they came in (it has a perforated lid, is that the problem?) in my fridge (which is generally pretty cold) Today on the ice was the first time i had fished with them and they preformed really well.  Just wish i could keep them alive!!

keep them cool, thats the only thing you can do. I usually transfer mine into a larger open container they can't crawl out of but have more room in to feed and chill.

I picked up 1000 spikes last year just after christmas and used them all through the hard
water season, and I was still using them in may for the spring crappie bite. ;D

I make an order for all my bait when first ice is forming and usually keep it till it gone.  Bait pucks rule I use the larger 1 to store the zip lock bag in the fridgeand transfer what I need for a day into the littler ones

appreciate the tips guys. Purchased a new batch of 1000 spikes and immediately put them into a sealed plastic bag w/the air out of it and they seem to be doing great. That made a big difference.

Will dead mousies still work? like freshly dead mousies? ???
I mean once you put the hook through them theyre dead :-\
If you can keep your head while everyone around you is losing theirs; you may have misunderstood the situation.

I have kept them for a long time, as long as I don't let them freeze.

Once they are dead, I don't like to use any of them at all.

maggots and meal worms can easily be stored in the fridge for a couple months.  They will go dormant be very inactive, but once they warm up they start to move around again
