I know everybody is getting antsy, including myself. Its fantastic that we may be on the hard water a little early this year. Been waiting for this time of year since spring. But lets all use our best judgement when getting on the lake. Lets all be cautious and safe this year. Tight Lines everbody!

Nice Pike Spoxic

I was at the Regional for 4 hours no flags and only one nibble on the jigging rod.  The ice ranged between 6 and 7 inches and I drilled holes from 20 yards off shore to 200 yards out. Deepest spot was only 10 feet.

Decided to hit the hardwater this morning. That saying turned literal in a hurry as I literally hit the water while i drove on to last mountain. In hindsight it was my own darn fault, just should not have taken the mother in law along on the first trip of the year. I managed to easily get out of the truck and to the surface. Shortly after the M-I-L surfaced nearby. Shucks I thought to myself, that could've been a bait bomb that would've lasted all winter! Anyways, I got back on the ice and in typical master fashion caught my limit before heading home to dry out. All the best to everyone this winter season. Tight lines. This is WIM signing out.

I measured 10 inches to a max of 10.5 inches. I was somewhere north of Midway and South of Etters. Ice thickness on this lake can vary a whole bunch so wherever you go measure it yourself and be safe.

I was fishing the very north end of the Lake. I have not been to Collingwood yet this ice season. I have been as far south as the Duval road and ice there is 12 inches or so. I am pretty sure Collingwood would be safe for walking but have not been there yet to look around.

Etters Beach is a good ice fishing area for perch and Walleye. If you explore South of there I am sure you will find yourself some good spots.

Usually a pretty good perch bite anywhere north or south of etters.  it picks up in jan-feb.  get out to the middle of the lake.  Some walleye there too but i find more and bigger farther south.   collingwood, whiterock and south to rowans and stone barn areas.  More depth and structure there seems to hold the eyes thru the winter

Fished East of Triple T in the middle of the lake today. 14 inches of good ice. There are a few small heaves near the east side of the lake. Fishing was slow but between the two of us we managed 1 Walleye 3 Jumbo perch  8 smaller perch and a Tullibee. Fished depths from 25 to 32 feet probably should have gone shallower as there was more action at 25 feet.

Anyone know ice conditions at glen harbour? It would be nice to make a quick trip after work this week but i know it usually takes a bit to get good ice there.

Ive been out to sarnia, which had 7 inches 2 weeks ago, and up to north of rowans twice. Good solid 10 inches there now. Stone barn was a little sketchy a week ago with the heave opening up down the middle of the bay while we were there.

Title: Re: Last Mountain 2017
Post by: walleyemaverick on Dec 12, 2017, 06:35 PM
Maybe with a sled dog team you could pull your shack out. Hearing theres a heave to cross at the launch and with this warm weather you wont catch me out there unless im on foot. But each to their own lol
Title: Re: Last Mountain 2017
Post by: familyfisher on Dec 12, 2017, 08:55 PM
Yeah made it out to Collingwood last weekend. There is a heave across right out in front of the launch but it comes right up to the island on the north end.  So a guy could prob cross it right on the north end of the launch close to the island shore. We crossed it about 40 yards out into the lake and there was no problem but that was before the warm weather.

I was the first one to drive on the ice saterday    However me or my buddy has been out the last 3 weeks in a row and have paid close attention to the ice conditions and build.  I was amazed how many people just drove on the ice after seeing a vehicle out without any thought or care when there was still 4 ish trucks on land and then 3 or 4 on the edge of the shore line.   And couldn't believe the 2 guys that parked pickups like 20 feet from eachother.   ???

Lots of vehicles driving on at regina beach.  Just stay to the west of the pier to get on the ice.  There was a truck that went In there today on the east side of the pier.  I measured 20" of ice.  But be careful around them heaves.  There is one by the point at the swim beach.  There is 2 heaves by pelican point but someone has marked a spot to drive through the first heave and for the second heave you can head towards little arm to get around the 2nd heave if you want to get on the other side of pelican point.  At kedleston  there is a heave that goes all the way across the lake.

Thanks Pollock fish. Part of having success is just keeping track of spots where you have done well over the years. I am 62 so I have had a little practice.
When going after a new species like my Lake Trout trip last year I study as much as I can and take advice from others who have the experience. Good luck this weekend.

Was on the lake further south of etters but it looked like there were lots of shacks out at etters.

Drove on at Etters boat launch and headed south a mile to a mile and a half to where the shacks all are. We've never ever fished Etters but thought we'd drive the extra 1/2hr and give it a shot. Managed 2 nice keeper wall eyes and 10 perch which 8 were nice jumbos. Lost a couple more wall eyes at the hole. All in all not a bad outing for not having a clue where to go.
Can anyone that fishes Etters regularly tell me why no one fishes right out from the resort? No luck there or just BETTER luck south down the lake, lol!
Oh ya and the ice is good to go, no heaves and about 20-24" of ice.
Good luck everyone, stay safe.

I have heard that folks sometimes go N of Etters Beach to ice fish around the mouth of Lewis Creek and catch pike and some perch there.

I have never tried it myself to see what the ice fishing is like, but that is what I was told.  ;)
It would be a good idea to test the ice well in that area, as there might still be some current from the creek. :-\

Are there any "need to knows" if a guy was to get onto the ice at Beuna Vista?  Similar stuff to 'stay east of the pier' at Regina Beach that someone should be aware of. I think the access point was on 4th Street

Was thinking about going there next time since Regina Beach was packed

Got on at Rowan's and headed south Sunday afternoon. Fishing was VERY slow; 1 pike, 1 walleye, 1 perch and 1 tulibee. Fishing started to pick up a lot at dark when we were leaving. 25" of ice but lots of cracks and it was making a ton of noise under us. Hopefully fishing is better this weekend.

Anyone have any updates on Midway landing north of Collingwoods? I haven't been that far north this year and was wondering how the drive on is and how the bites been?? Any info would be appreciated and thanks.

I have not been there  (Midway) yet and the reason is I was told a crack opened up and there was two feet of open water. Now this was over ten days ago and may have frozen back over. You could prob drive there from Collingwood as I drove half way to Midway from there with no problems.

Hey Everyone,

I'm headed out to LML for the first time tomorrow morning and I was wondering if anyone has been having luck anywhere around Colesdale or any other places people might recommend.  I'm quite new to ice fishing so I am not real picky on what we get but it would be nice to have a spot to get at least a fish or two in the shack!  That and if there are any areas to avoid on the ice for heaves.  Heard from some people that Rowan's Ravine was a decent spot too or even down around Glen Harbor.  Any advice or pointers are greatly appreciated.  Thanks all!

Managed to ice 22 perch sunday from 10am to 5 pm, 2 jumbos and the rest ranging in size from why did you bite my hook to respectable lol. 2 walleye and one Jack on camera but never bothered to hit the lines. Was a fun day on the ice except for the wind. Measured the ice at 30in just north of the shacks at Etters.

Lip Ripper we must have been pretty close to each other, I had decent luck just north of the main group of shacks as well.
Hunkered down in the shack all day, the wind was just to bitter to stay outside.
Fished from 9-3 and managed 14 perch of which I kept 11. They ranged from 10-12" which are really nice perch anywhere.
Let 3 little guys go back.

I don't even fish that lake and I know to avoid that spot. Buddy fell threw a few years back walking back to the cabin across there all pissed up the night before the big tournament. The ice never freezes.

Regina Beach point and pelican point. Two places to stay away from. Every year trucks go down and people don’t learn. Due to currents and  natural flowing springs it does not freeze properly and is very unpredictable at those two locations.
There may be more that I’m unaware of but I definitely avoid those two.
 Good fishing and stay safe!

To many people get to close to heaves and points.... stay away from heaves, points, mouths Of a river/creek, or places with current... don’t be to lazy to drill test holes as you go.  Also don’t go on in the dark(am or pm)if u have not fished the area before this season. Wait till light and be safe if it’s new to you.

The depth varies from day to day sometimes. This yearI  have had the best luck in 25 to 28 feet esp for the Jumbos . I have a few spots saved where there is a rapid transition  from 20 to 30 and even 40 feet . That way we can drill a bunch of holes then test until we find where the schools are feeding.

Where exactly is the stone barn? We went on at Arlington yesterday and drove to Etters. There were several small heaves along the way that we crossed. We checked them before crossing and all had over 24" ice. Fishing was terrible. 6 small perch and a dozen tulibee.
Title: Re: Last Mountain 2017
Post by: lostmyhook on Jan 21, 2018, 03:56 PM
It’s straight across from Glen Harbour on the west side of the lake. If you crossed those heaves your fortunate your truck is still on top of the ice. Yes the ice is thick but most of the vehicles going under are ate the heaves. Best of luck and keep your windows down crossing those heaves.

Excellent access at Etter's. You will see a long line of shacks out across the lake to the southwest. The general depth there is 28 feet. There is lots of lake to explore, so just punch some holes in the area. On Sunday we caught pike, walleye, perch, and a tullibee. The camera and flasher were active pretty much all day long. If you like small perch, a tiny beaded hook was the ticket.

It is possible but there are a lot of heaves going through the lake in that area. You maybe looking at a long drive just to get around. Personally I would stick to one area and work it hard searching for fish.

Hi Railman!
I’m not sure what it’s like to get on at Sarnia. Once you get out there it should not be a problem going to Callingwood. While at Collingwood I do see a lot of trucks coming from Sarnia way. There’s one heave that shoots across the front of Collingwood and then across the lake stay away from that and you should be fine.
If you’re not sure, drill a couple of test holes and stay safe.

Went on the ice at Rowan's sunday morning and went south from the marina, no bites all morning, 1 missed fish on a tip up. Moved spots and started heading north and manage to bring home a few walleye (17-18") and a handful of perch. All in all not a bad day for only being out a few hours. Found the majority of the fish in 25 feet of water.

Appears to be a heave a bit north both of Etters goes east across lake either go shore to shore and get around heave on west side or come on ice south of Arlington somewhere and miss heave.Unaware of if heave can be crossed anywhere other than shore.

Can anybody tell me the ice thickness on LML around the stone barn or elsewhere. Do I need the extension on the auger after all this cold weather? Hoping to get out next weekend.

just take it then you'll have it...ice thickness varies by at least a foot on different spots on that lake

Tight lines everyone.

For sure there's one good heave out a couple of hundred yards running North/South. If you stay to the right going south and closer to the rocks you can get around it to get out deeper but going left (North to White Rock) I'm not sure exactly if it gets in your way or not, but I've been told that heave runs for miles to the North so depending on where you wanna go it may or may not be an issue. I've only been down there once this year and that was a month ago so it may have changed. Good luck and stay safe.

Lol, to funny AnglerBrian.... your so-so day of 3 walleye and 3 perch is a decent to good day for a lot of us on that lake, lol!!!
I would take that any day for the ol Dead Sea. I guess to many days of 6-7hr days to leave the lake with nothing in the bucket
has made me come to appreciate just taking something home. Good job none the less. How's the ice up North?  Still the same I assume
and nothing new to report other than take your extension with I guess.

The perch were not exactly jumping out of the holes at Etter's today. Wind and cold kept us pop up bound, so we were happy to bring home some nice jumbos ranging from 11 to 12 inches. The pike and walleye that cruised by showed no real interest. Our bite occurred mid - day. The afternoon got very, very quiet.
No tulibee.

Fun day at the regional with my son in law daughter and grandkids. We set up the tent and tipups and had a blast catching and releasing a few pike. Pop hot chocolate smokies and hot dogs for lunch. Peter had the first pike a very large Pike on the jawjacker. Andrew was so interested in watching his dad reel it up that he forgot to reel his line in. The pike grabbed his bait too and before we knew it his rod flew down the hole. After a bout four huge runs Peter started gaining  and when he got her turning up the hole we saw Andrew's rod sideways across the hole preventing the fish from coming up. I was able to use the gaff to pull Andrews lure out of the fish then I grabbed the handle of his rod and pulled that up minus a couple of inches of the rod tip.  The pike went crazy and made one more run snapping Peters line. . We settled down and one of the Ice riggers outside went off this Time Peter landed a nice pike.

Anglerbrian, looks like a grand old time up at the regional park. Is there any pressure ridges up in that area that make areas inaccessible? I am looking to go up there next weekend just wondering if I have to do some maneuvering out there.

They did start to get active at sundown but I was fishing deep so took my 4 Eyes and three perch and called it a day.
Tullibee were also hungry today. Can't stand the smell of them so back they went.

Mother Nature won a unanimous decision today off TTT. The perch were very shy in the morning. Once the wind picked up mid day, things got really interesting. The wind lifted my buddy's tent right off the ice, breaking the tie down strings. He could only watch in shock as it blew down the lake for about half a mile. By the time he drove over to it, the tent was a wreck. I didn't dare move out of my hard bottomed pop up because I was the only thing holding it in place.

On the bright side, we did see 11 bull elk on the drive to LML; most still carrying their antlers.  We also got great gas mileage heading home.

Nice going cerndo, good looking pike and walleye. :)

Way to go anglerbrian and company. You guys found some dandy sized pike at the N end and nice perch, walleye and cisco / tullibee at midway. @)
Lucky that you got the rod back, the 2 rods I have lost down the hole were gone for good, lol.

I was out on March 2nd at Rowan's Ravine and found 7 pike.
They were all decent size, but one stood out from the rest. :)
Full report to come in a bit. ;)

I wonder how access will be like at LML after this heavy snowfall.  ???
I bet it will tough getting on for a while now. :P

Its nice to hear about locals in different villages around the lake pitching in and clearing some snow for the rest of us anglers who don't live at the lake. I think collection boxes are a great idea. I was out at my shack yesterday, had to blaze a trail the whole way. We made it, but it was a tough pull for the truck. I always move my shack at the end of the day and I could barely budge my shack. With the deadline of the 15th quickly approaching, I'm sure lots of guys will be pulling their shacks off this weekend. Hopefully there are guys out there willing to give guys a hand this weekend as I'm sure there will be plenty of guys having issues getting their shacks off. I'll be out Saturday and Sunday with shovels and tow straps willing to lend a hand where I can. Good luck this weekend everyone, play safe and tight lines!

High house launch is open now. I pushed all the snow with my side by side and then broke trail across the lake with my truck. It’s about 10” deep but still soft yet. Definitely need a 4x4 truck to go. I think Sunday will be the last day for the shack on the ice. Be safe out there!!

We hit Midway today and access was good the Durango went wherever I pointed her. 12 to 16 inches of snow with the odd deep drift We tried out in front of the Midway road but it was slow I only caught 1 perch there. Headed south to where I fished last week and toughed it out for a few walleye and a couple of perch.

If you think Collingwood is bad try the north end. Much more snow plus some deeper drifts to make things fun. I never got stuck but when making my own trails almost came to a stop on one drift. The pike fishing made up for it though and what a nice sunny day it was.

Fished Wednesday afternoon at Midway and came up empty handed. Good access and some good trails to get around but with a 4x4 you can go where you want if those trails aren't leading you in the right direction. Just to bad the fish weren't co-operating, oh well we'll give it another try on the weekend. Good luck everyone.

7 pike, 1 walleye from 8am-4pm.

38 inch pike on 4 lbs test/perch rod/lure, no litre,15 minutes battle.

Ww.... was out wed got one burb and 1 small pike in 3 hours so took off to my pike spot and slow as hell.    This am got to the lake after my son's soccer game about 11 and went to pp again to see if the showed up.  Talked to a few guys and really slow. None on the ice waiting for the knife from what I could see. So me and my son didn't bother and went to chase flags else where.    Trails there are some. Breaking trail sucks as the temps don't allow the snow to pack it down and stick.  Tires just spit it out and it's not sticking to the ice so makes it real fun.  I asked my son if we could make it to our spot with out getting stuck ... he said yes I said no .... I was right in the end 6 different time I had to get out and shovel lol. End result of the day 5 Flags and 3 nice little piggys all back in the lake to make some more fat little piggys one day.

Made it on at Etter's today. Didn't get stuck, but 4WD was a necessity. We had three periods of action fishing for pike and burbot in the shallows. It never got really hot, but the evening was the best. We had around a dozen flags, and my partner put three on the ice. I on the other hand, discovered the line on my tip ups was well past its best before date. The fishing gods made certain to punish me for my carelessness.

Is there anywhere that the cisco bite is decent? Still trying to check them off the list, my 8 year old boy is too. Tried Etter's in January my girlfriend got one and we got a couple perch but we did not hit the tullibee like we hoped. Have a 4x4 with decent tires. Could try Etter's again if the snow isn't real bad.

Thank you

Last ice trip to LML. Accessed at Etter's and fished shallow again for pike and burbot. We had some swings and misses, but ended up catching six pike and a burbot. The action came in flurries with a double header and a triple header accounting for five of the fish caught. The fish gods showed mercy and even benevolence, after last Sunday's scorn and disdain.
