Open water question
« on: Mar 14, 2014, 09:57 AM »
I am going to try summer walleye fishing. At night what part of the lakes should I look to find them at night? Hard bottom with weeds? Sandy? Big drop offs? What kind of lures should I buy? Any help would be appreciated.

First question is what kind of lake or reservoir are you fishing? My favorite night time baits are long stick baits, either trolled with the electric or casted to reefs and rocks. Area's 2' to 3' deep with deep water near by. If I mark shad in an area I will troll the area after dark with shad type baits on boards around 1 MPH. My second bait is a 5" to 6" swimbait just casted and slow rolled. Some time big twister tails will work. If there a little wind I use rattle bait (smithwicks) if it's calm I use Rapala's.

It is a drainage lake.

I don't have much time on natural lakes. Go looking for spots in the day time to fish at night. Mark them on the GPS and then you have a milk run of sorts. I would think over the tops of weed beds would be a key pattern on natural lakes and reef and rock bars and long points. Never say "too shallow" because there is no such thing. Good luck.

Ok I'll hit the rock bar, and the deep weed beds. Should I try the sand bar?

I've never done very good on just sand. If you can find and edge of weeds or rock it might be worth trying.
