Just watched a truck sink to the bottom of willoughby! Most uncool scary thing I have seen. Guy made it out but just barely.
-
what was he thinking? have any luck the other day?
-
That is scary stuff right there. How deep?
-
talk about having a bad day!
-
Where's about did it go through?
-
**censored** was that fool thinkin way to early to be driving on that lake
-
I was there yesterday and a truck almost went through about 200yds straight off the access. And I agree,WAY to early for trucks driving on willouhby.
-
and that was yesterday? so where did the one that went thro go thro
-
It went through about 200 yards out and to the right from the launch got to be 50 to 60 fow
-
thats what lazzyness gets ya
-
It was pretty bad, got a pic of the top of the truck dissapearing into the water. Fishing was slow, caught a few little lakers but kinda lost interest after the truck going through.

Not at all surprised, I was there yesterday and the ice was only good for walking, and there were trucks all over, unbelievable. I steered clear of large vehicles and heard a guy mention to people at the landing about the sketchy ice where this happened. The sad thing is exactly 0 people needed to be driving anywhere as the fishin was all done within 500 yards of the landing. I really don't get it...

No not mine, my truck was on solid ground. Me and MHC were fishing about 500 yards away and heard the ice crack, by the time we loooked over the guys were out of the truck and I just snapped a pic as the thing sunk. Will post pics tommorow.
-
Just got back. Walked on from the north end and fished the north west shore. Could see a vehicle with a yellow strobe light going at the access, thought it was tow truck pulling somebody off that got stuck driving on. And he probably was as a truck through the ice 200 yards from the access isn't getting winched out from shore. 200 yards from the access can get you to 100 fow too real easy. Lake gets deep quick. Glad the dude is ok.
-
Boy it happens every year and I still don't get it. Why risk your vehicle for a chance to get skunked? I do drive on in some areas but not until everone else has been driving on for a week or two.
-
??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
-
I have no problem driving on, but my stipulations are
1)Dont be the first to drive out!
2) If you stay on the plowed road on the ice, I'm Guessing you will be okay
and 3) Don't be a wanderer, Stay in someone elses tracks!
Just like today, we had never fished holiday harbor and if we hadn't talked to anyone, we would not have known about the spring their and the soft ice! do your homework people and don't let tired legs influence your decision on safe driving
Tight lines everyone!

Yep, its just not worth it. Ask this guy I watched go in last year in Champlain.

Where is that?
-
I never drive on until Iv'e walked and drilled the area a number of times.
-
Too bad......still too early......we dont seem to get those two weeks of really cold weather in Jan anymore......I cant remember the last time I actually drove on the ice.
-
been at least 5 or 6 years since ive driven a truck on, but now that i have a wheeler i dont have to
-
I fished out there saturday there were people driving all around the access and one guy drive way out to the middle till someone started yelling at him. there's only 4" of crap ice and 3"-4" of solid ice. On a good note I did watch a guy catch a 15lb laker and a 5lb salmon. Our group of 4 caught a real nice 24" rainbow about 4lbs and a 22" lake trout about 3-4lbs.

I just read a article this morning, on the WCAX website. The Truck is sitting in 75 Feet of water. State Police are looking for the owner! You get fined for everyday, that Vehicle is sitting in the water. Lake Willoughby takes along time to freeze over, during the winter.
-
Yeah does anyone know the protocol for that? I heard they have 2 days then its 1200 dollars a day plus cutting a trench from shore, hiring a diver and something to pull it out, and a regular fine and some sort of environmental fine, not to mention the loss of the truck and everything in it.
-
yeah thats not worth it
-
Definately a reality check for me seeing that happen, thinking back to some of the dumb stuff Ive done on the ice over the years. Not that Ive done anything that dumb though.
-
These are the pictures we got yesterday. The one w/ the two guys around it is not super clear, but you can see the dark spot in front of them and that is roof of the truck right as it disappeared below the ice. The other one is self explanatory. I'm thinking there was some substance abuse going on.... one, to even think about driving out there and two, not reporting it as soon as they got back! Who knows, either way definite reality check.

Not worth it - EVER period.
First thing I thought of when WCAX said they are still looking for the Owner: "well dive down there and grab the registration out of the glove box" ;D
It's just fools luck they did not drown in the truck. Sadly people do die each year when a vehicle goes though the ice, they just don't learn.
-
Where is that?
Off Tabors point, last year. The guys were not even fishing, just out there fooling around. I guess karma's a b***h.
-
This one must have had floatation!!

I fished the bomoseen derby one year and saw three go thought they were trying to drive over pressure cracks one was a brand new one ton. see another one driving from the putman house on champlain to singing ceders on 4 in. he almost made it, he dove out of the truck an rolled on the ice like a hollywood stunt man they dared him at the bar :cookoo:
-
Saw on news last night they were still trying to find whos truck was in lake...
-
If anyone hears when they are going to pull the truck out can you post it. I want to take the day off, set some tip ups and watch the show (from a safe distance)
-
no but the owners are screwed if they dont come forward pretty soon, they start fining daily tomorrow!
-

I've heard a truck dropping down into the water shuts the bite right down .... :o
-
that would make sense, we were going to offer to drop my buddy's fish finder camera down the hole so they could see their truck but thought better of it.
-
Hey everyone I need your help. Just came off a two day bender and can't seem to find my truck. It's usually at the bar.
-
I dont know what they are thinking, eventually they are gonna send a diver down and get the license plate number, its only a matter of time before they find out whos truck it is
-
the only reason I can think of is alcohol or drugs in their system
-
Well, I hope that they, the State of Vermont Natural Resources, had GPS, to mark the spot of where the truck went down, as here comes another round of snow!
-
Maybe... this could be a huge news story...stolen pickup from down south somewhere...this is what I call getting rid of the evidence. These guys are probabbly in the Virgin Isles soaking up the rays while we sit here and freeze... ;D ;D ;)

Yeah about that... :-\ ;D
-
somehow the guys still had all their fishing gear and I watched them load it into their dads rig, must have been in the back of the truck and they grabbed it out really quick.

Or in the truck!!
-
Was that up at the sandbar a couple years ago in march? If so I was up there one day when one went through. It was a weird day because a a small plane kept circling around at a low height. I guess the pilot had spotted a truck under the ice in mallets bay. A guy had gone through in the middle of the night earlier in the season and they hadn't found him yet.
-
Seems like every year some drunk guy heads off onto the lake late at night to either drive around or "Drive home" and goes through unfortunately... :-\
-
alcohol and drugs has nothing to do with common sense. Stoned or Sober your an idiot for driving this early on Willoughby. Could have been a few guys there that day in the same situation. I leave my truck on shore no matter what. That laziness will cost you someday.

How did you know it was there Dads pickup truck, that they put there gear into? Were you at the access, when they did it? Who are these guys? ;D The State of Vermont, is still looking for the owner of the vehicle?

I was dropping a buddy off at the launch and the two guys were standing there and I talked to them for a minute. The driver was soaked and looked pretty scared and said he barely got out the passenger door. Then his dad pulled in, they threw their gear in the back and took off. I saw a quote on the channel 3 website on the news story that says that he called the state police the next day and that the cops and news need to communicate better so who knows what is going on.

How much ice was there, when you were fishing that day, when the truck went under?
-
Well it was a little scary, some spots had 8 where we were and then we would go 100 ft and hit 3 inches of ice, we tried to go across the middle with my wheeler first thing in the morning and started hitting bad ice and slush so we turned back. The only trucks on the ice were right by the launch except for the dude that went through.
-
we havent had enough cold weather to really make ice on that lake and the snow deff dont help matters we need a thaw and then a week of -20 at night weather...
-
theres a notice in the paper looking for the guy whos truck went through
-
What the heck is that guy thinking?Get it out
-
theres a notice in the paper looking for the guy whos truck went through
what paper?

The Barton Chronicle just had a article on it, this Wedesday. Sgt Michael LaCourse reports that the State Police received a call that a Ford truck went thru the ice near the fishing access at approx 3pm. The occupants were reported to have left the scene on foot. Anyone with info about this incident is asked to contact the Derby barracks, at 334-8881.
-
So I just talked to the state police and they said the guy called in the next day and now it is in ANR's hands. He said most likely they will not take the truck out until spring.
-
i have pictures of the guy that went threw at the sandbar in march a couple years ago i was fishing right next to him (caught a ton of pike that day tho including the one below)there was only like 5 inches of ice ppl dont learn i'll see if i can find those pics
