for jiging swedish pimples. For bait I use small minows.

When jigging for perch I like to use a vertical jig because they seem to be more attracted to it as crappie seem more attracted to a horizontal(talking about in which the direction if the hook point is facing. A variety of small jigs work great and my favorite thing is to tip with a mousie as the tails give a lot of action.

Small white Swedish pimple or northlands forage minnow in hologram/glow. Vertical jigging is best in my books with the aforementioned tipped with a perch eye, pork belly or small hunk of salted shiner.

in real deep water[over 25 feet], i use a dropshot setup and any small glow jig with maggots or minnows. i let the rig touch bottom then pound it real hard stirring up the bottom. it seems to trigger the fish most of the time. when the perch are schooled and in a biting mood , just a plain gold aberdeen hook[ about size 8 ] will do the job.sinker on bottom and the jig about 6 inches from bottom. suspended perch are another story all together.

I agree a vertical jig of any kind and tip it with a waxie or an eyeball once you've landed a couple!  PC

tracker 1,
I mainly fly fish in the summer/spring/fall in small streams around here.  Closest is the Jemez drainage.  I do spend a lot of time in CO though as that is where I was born and raised.  Also boat in some of the lakes in southern NE.
For ice fishing in NM, we have a few lakes that freeze up regularly (Eagle Nest, Fenton, Heron).  I mainly Ice fish in Eagle Nest for perch.  I also take a few trips to CO each year to Ice Fish.
The water here is pretty scarce so I do what I can.  I love to fish and one day I'll get back to a state with water.

Been doing fairly well with a Kodiak Pegasus spoon (love the clicking from the wings) with the thin tail end that's been cut off Gulp Alive Fish Fry this year. Usually a horizontal bait user, but whatever it takes. www.fishyum.com (http://www.fishyum.com)

For years I have had the best luck with a half ounce bay de noc solid white pimple - with a chartreuse best tackle ditsi mitzi jig attached below - when attaching jig below I use a northlands stinger but I cut / snip the treble hook off and attach another little quick clip like the other end, bit of a process bending the clips and the expense but worth it for conveinience to change out the ditsi mitzi to a small green t-tot on cloudy overcast days.
Using the 1/2 oz. pimple allows for quick descent and flash attraction. Tipping ditsi mitzi with 1/2 mealworm to start until getting a perch eye. Now with the perch eye, when attaching take the eye and go through the back side where the vein / nerve hole is and centering through from of eyeball, less distortion to eye and slower release of fluids from eyeball membrane - bigger perch eye the better.

My favourite is the smallest jigging rapala, in fire tiger or chartreuse. Approx 1" or so, I put an eye or piece of minnow meat on the tiny centre treble. I like them 'cuz it's easy to feel everything - even 30' down in a 30 KPH wind.

Teardrops are OK, but slow to get down and hard to feel well unless you're in a shack or there is no wind...

Tight Lines!

I have to make a correction to my previous post, it is a Best Tackle mitzi ditzi - not ditsi mitzi. Stocked up on them a few years ago and haven't bought any for a while, at Pokeys Tackle shop yesterday, found them and now the correction.

I'm a little different than most when it comes to perchin. I use a 2 hook pickeral rig with a minnow on each hook. If the perch are there you'll be gettin doubles on a regular basis. I've had people tell me I can't catch fish on these that the wire will scare them away. When I take my kids I don't even get to fish, too busy takin fish off their hooks

I fish fiskas, marmooska, genz worm.I usually fish the smaller jigs on 1 or 2lb line. I think I might be missing the boat (or hut) by not going to the larger, pimple, forage minnow type jigs. what do ya think?

I used those pickerel rigs when i was younger and caught a ton of perch on them. We called them crappie rigs, but they were identical. They always came with a big hook, like a #6 and real heavy line, like 20lb. I couldn't see using them now cause I am all in to finesse in my fishing, but if they worked then, I am sure they would work now.

Perch pounders are about the same thing, just without the wires. They have a fly on them tied to a #8 or so hook and are a little more subtle presentation. They worked great for a while too. Haven't used either in a few years, but you sparked my interest. Maybe I will rig up again with something like this!

NO SUCH THING as one best jig. You need all different colors and sizes and switch till you find what they want that day. It depends on the lake, the day, and the time of day. Sometime they'll want a bigge chartruese islander in the morning and switch to hitting 1/32 oz zebra striped jigs. I like dark jigs with bright bottoms. Flies as well are a good choice. I don't use the real heavy jigs like halis and pimples much anymore for perch.

Bottom line (IMO) everything mentioned here will work just fine - and I’ve tried most - but currently I’m using the Hali Jigs this year - I just bought a couple dozen of the Kodiak (less expensive than Hali) and a better (stronger) chain - and the Buckshot jigs - goin’ to give them a try this year ... I just mixed it up with the standard colors - gold, perch, and clown, etc. (Clown is my confidence color - but we all have one) ... so what I didn’t see mentioned here that I swear by, and I’ve been using it for years .(both open and especially hard water) ... it’s the “Berkley Power Bait scent attractant” in the squeeze bottle ... this stuff will out fish a guy sitting right next to me every time (hands down) using the same bait / lure rig color etc. ... I’m not much into the voodoo advertizing and gimmicks ... but I do use the ju-ju of the Berkley scent almost every time I’m pan fishing ... if I don’t have it with me - I feel like I’m severely handicapping myself (like fishing with one hand behind my back) - and giving the fish the upper hand ... I feel like the fish are definitely more active using it - and stay active for a longer period of time - when without it sometimes it seems like the bite just falls off real quick after two or three fish ... for the $3 to $5 it runs to always have it on hand - what’s it really cost you - maybe the same as a dozen - dozen and a half minnows basically ... I assure you - it won’t lesson the amount of bites you get ... it’s a worthy investment - keep it in your pocket so it stays flowing in the cold ... it's a must have item!

For big perch I like the northland buckshot spoon, perch color tipped with small minnow. For lakes that I can't use minnows. I like the very small northland live forage minnow jig, perch color tipped with wax worm. I am also very fond of any of the "eyed" micro jigs that JB lures offers.

I use what is locally called a bibbit on Northern lake Champlain in Vermont. Basically it is a small chunk of painted lead with a hook. They look like a small J shape and are often about the size of a cashew nut. The barb is cut off and when reeling the fish up a simple dunk in the bucket or on the ice releases them. Most have a base color of white with accents in chartreuse or hot orange as being most common. They are fairly heavy and go to the bottom quickly. Vertical jig them in the lower 1 to 3 ft of the water column and the strike is pretty easy to detect. Once you get on a school of good fish they will hit it almost as fast as it gets back down.

Ive had luck with a few of the smaller Kasty's  When its a good bite my favorite is hanging an eye or a chunk of skin from the last fish.  Gets it up and back down quick.  Durable.   First keeper can sometimes be tough with a Spike or Waxie.  Seems easier for me to get things kicked off with a Shucks or a Moosh and then switch it up when they are "focused".
