So I decided to take my Wife and 2 kids to the Pine Lake Fish derby. Preregistared for it. So excited to share my hobby with the whole family. So my wife wakes up a 6 in the morning. And we were out the doors by 7:30. Get to the lake Fire up the auger, let it warm up and take the choke off give it some throtle and it wouldn't rev out. Then it would start run for a few secounds and stall. So I  pulled and pulled.and it would run but not rev. and Boom I pulled to hard and hit the end of the cord and it broke. So we went home not one hole in the Ice. Got home took the top off it and the spring flew out. I got it back together but the cord won't retract. So I got my drill spun the motor over and it run like a dream. What The PUCK. Don't ask me. I would say it was froze but it never was inside to thaw. So you tell me. It runs fine now.

I don't have a Tanaka, but have had to replace the pull cord on my Jiffy. It required spinning the recoil backwards until it stopped, wedging my pliers in it to keep it from recoiling, and then tying off the new cord. Once it's spun backwards there should be plenty of tension on it wanting to recoil. Hope this helps you some. I also watched a youtube video first to reassure that I was doing it properly

The only problem with the Tanaka the dish is 3" deep the recoil spring goes in and about 3" round. I am going to get a hold of Tanaka and see if I can order a hole new recoil and casins for it. It might become my back up auger.

Thank for the help, but the Tanaka recoil is completely different. I have rewound recoils before, but this one is something else. The dish is so deep and small you can get your fingure in it to work.

Guys--Call me stupid but I blew out my cord last year on a Nils (the cord broke).  Took it to a local small engine shop and they replaced it for something like $12.00.   So, what's the point?
