I don't have a Tanaka, but have had to replace the pull cord on my Jiffy. It required spinning the recoil backwards until it stopped, wedging my pliers in it to keep it from recoiling, and then tying off the new cord. Once it's spun backwards there should be plenty of tension on it wanting to recoil. Hope this helps you some. I also watched a youtube video first to reassure that I was doing it properly
