I've had an FL8SE for the past 10 years and have been very satisfied with it. I fish mostly for bluegill and crappie up to 25' - 30' of water. If I were targeting bottom huggers such as perch and walleye I might think of upgrading to an FL18 that has a zoom feature and low power for when fishing in 10' of water or less. I bought an S cable for my unit when fishing in shallow water. But from what it sounds you're not fishing that shallow.

I'm sure that you will get other suggestions but the FL8SE works for me.

The FL18 would be an apples to apples comparison  with your marcum ...so that leaves the "upgrade" you seek to the 20 22 and 28 models in both the FL and FLX models...based on your fishing style conditions a 12 Deg transducer would be my choice..the ProView has had mixed reviews with IS members

Well even tho i cant stand marcum. the vx1 is more flasher than a fl8se so i dont recommend that unit.fl18 is a rock solid unit and for the depths you fish  a 12 degree ducer would work fine.any vexilar model is a long lasting solid unit.

I currently run an FLX28 - moved up from an FL8SE - and also fish mainly in waters no deeper than 50'.  The FLX28 zoom features are very helpful, especially for those bottom hugging perch, and having the ability to move into the shallows amongst the weeds with low power and weed mode settings has also been a nice upgrade.  The option to use up to five colors has been another helpful feature.  IMHO, the unit is definitely a "turn on and go" machine with the auto selection, but there is a lot more that it can do when you use the "manual" controls.

I personally dont like auto mode.it get confused when fishing say 14ft but it wont stay on the 15ft setting when fishing real soft bottom in lp mode.it toggles back and 4th between 15 and 20 ft setting.i was fishing next to another flx28 doing the same.simple fix is just put the ducer a little farther down tho.very versed in vexilar.lol i have or ran every model made.i wont go into my marcum history.jk but not really.

the 12 is a good basic unit. it is just a more updated version of the FL8. one negative is that it does not have the zoom option that comes in handy when fishing bottom hugging perch. the unit will work but if I were you I would of went with either the FL18, FLX20 or FLX28. if you could find a deal on a good used one the FL22HD is also a really good model but is limited to a depth range of no more then 60 feet.

I have a Cabela’s VXR, (Marcum), that’s over 10 years old, and other than a battery issue, I have NO complaints whatsoever. I also have a Hook 5 that I’m still trying to figure out! Lol I guess what I’m trying to say is “buy what you can afford, learn to use it well, and I’m sure you’ll be just fine on the ice! MYO

Look at the refurbished models. Same as new warranty.
You could pick up a fl18 pro pack

I would think that you should be able to pick up an FL18 on sale somewhere. I know Fleet Farm has a Genz box for $379. If I lived in an area with a longer ice season I would probably pull the trigger.

I have the FL18 genz box with the DD100 depth finder and the Vex glo ring. Total game changer is right. I move way more than I would without one but that also means you find more fish. Great unit. I would definitely recommend it.

got my fl28 propack off ebay for half the price, all it needed was a new battery, the unit itself had hardly been used, you can cut your costs a lot buying used off ebay or refurbished, we have sent one tumbling down a hill when a sled turned over and still works like a champ :-), love it, sure the lower models are good too, you can always buy the add on digital depth to most models now :-), Enjoy what ever you choose

If the unit is in good working order why switch up ..could may be add a lithium battery and/or case...lightens the load and gives a longer run time

no it doesn't.  the 18 is the first unit with zoom in the vex line.  but thats not even an upgrade over your lx1i.  its a good comparison to that unit.  you are looking for a 20+.

edit: seen above.  yeah you are probably good staying with what you have.
