Title: Moosehead
Post by: Ihaveahairycat on Feb 07, 2024, 06:15 AM
Traveling to Moosehead in a couple weeks for our annual family fishing weekend and would like to bring my side by side instead of snowmobile. Does anyone know roughly how much snow is on the ice in the Greenville area? Hard to tell from the Webcams.

Looking forward to giving a report on fish caught and some cusk chowder.

Any help would be appreciated!

There isn't a lot of snow on the ice, but getting on the lake is where you could have a problem. Some access points had large drifts and slush last weekend. As you probably know, your trip is a couple of weeks out so conditions are likely to change.

Heading to Moosehead next week and was wondering about smelt bait sales in or near Greenville.
Is there any time that there could be a lack of bait and if so any help for a backup location would be helpful. Thanks.

There's always Indian Hill Trading Post if you're coming from the south.

Lucky Bait on right 1/4 mile past Indian Hill TP at the edge of Town proper. Just past the flashing slow down sign. Usually open Thurs-Sun in the AM only. I believe he's the largest local bait wholesaler.

Turner's 24 hour self-serve is 5 miles south of Greenville, west side of the road (left heading North). A couple hundred feet past Dove Tail Bats Sports Academy on the right. His sign is up, I have not stopped this year.

Moosehead Sled repair in Rockwood in an emergency.

I suggest confirming with Lucky ahead of time to check hours.

Lucky had nice healthy smelt a couple weeks ago, when Indian Hill did not.

Last weekend during the derby weekend Indian Hill only had Shiners at least that's what they had Thursday evening

I’m hoping to get up there Thursday morning and ice camp for a night so I can send an update if i do make it up. I’ll be on foot at the northeast cove though

You could always get smelts at PJS in Dexter next to wassookeag lake . He well bag them and put the air to them.

Thanks for the tip on Dexter. I believe that we are traveling through there and may pick up some then.

Just wanted to update for those who care, caught some bait sized cusk, a nice laker and my buddy caught a 3lb salmon which was an awesome fight and fun to land. Over all great trip with the family and had about 18 inches of ice so no complaints. On the bait topic, Indian hill had small shiners only but luckys right down the road had nice smelt and suckers!
