Nils lacking power .
« on: Feb 08, 2014, 02:11 PM »
I have an 8 inch Nils with a Tanka 262 motor . Cuts a couple inches but lacks power to continuing pushing thru the ice . Doesn't stall , just stops cutting . Just had the head sharpened cause i thought that was the problem but it's the same. Starts and runs fine , changed gas , added Seafoam . Any thoughts as to what might be wrong ?

Does not seem to be slipping, don't know if it's full r.p.m. no way to test that
, but that's what i was thinking . Throttle is to full stop on the carb .

When it stops cutting, does it stop turning the auger as well?  If not then it's the head.  Something's not right there.  If it stops turning the auger it's the clutch on the output of the powerhead.

just have to ask, is the shaft lock engaged, tanaka is the only drill ive seen with a shaft lock. my power point blade sometimes grabs as well, went back to the hand auger cutting head with the tanaka

Not sure i know what you mean by the shaft lock ? I don't use the power point blade , it's the regular shaving blade .

under the power head theres a chrome lever that snaps in and out on mine, it locks the shaft in place for starting and walking around with it, probably to back the drill out if it were to get stuck. if its engaged the engine never fully gets up to speed under full throttle

Has the Tanaka 262 and the 8" Nils combination ever worked for you?

Yes this Nils is 6 years old and always worked flawlessly . Don't think there's a shaft lock on this older model .

a simple thing to check is the gas cap venting, take it off and see if it has more power. mine has some kind of automatic vent in the cap and i could see that failing or starting to fail down the road, mines newer, 3 years
