O-rings and vet wrap. What they use to wrap horses ankles or cat and dogs. Stretches and adheres to itself with no residue.

Plastic zip ties are the way I go, personally.

I have used electrical tape before, and it worked great. As for the sticky residue, who cares? You're putting another reel on it when you take it off, aren't you? That said, I've only done this to rods I've gotten as gifts. If I buy a rod, it has to have a reel seat. I won't buy one without it.

The problem is that if you have had the tape on a cork handle for a long time then want to take the tape off it can actually pull chunks of cork out of the handle. I had it happen to a rod once. I prefer the cork handles so you can place the reel anywhere on the handle.
